this and that

My
last
Fridaycation
 the
last
 Friday
 of
August

 Summer
 is almost over
 I dont know how
 it is
where you
 are
 but
the warmth of summer
lingers
 on here
 sometimes
 into October

 by the way
if you ever want to visit NYC
 October
 is the perfect
month

 I flirted
with
 taking the Staten Island ferry
 today
 not
 having
made it last week
 but
 I woke
 yesterday
with a slight case of vertigo
I dont think
 a ferry on water
is where
I need to be

I'm okay

 I just
cant
 do
a lot
 of
head bending
especially
not down
especially
 not quickly

its not
 too hard
 to avoid
however
when I went to bed last night
convinced it was fading
 I lay down
suddenly
 I was
well
 its hard to explain
 how
lying
still
 you can feel
 like
 you're
whirling
 twirling

not pleasant

so
I think
I will stay
 standing
or
sitting
 or
walking
 and
 on solid ground
 not
on board
 a ferry

 nevertheless
 I am
 definitely
going to get out and about

 seriously

I am fine and I am sure this will pass

Last Saturday
after my hair appointment in Midtown
I wandered
 over
to
Park Avenue
 shot
those great Niki de Saint Phalle sculptures

 on the way
 across
 54th Street
I passed
 an old building
actually
an old restaurant/bar
called
Bill's Gay Nineties
it closed in March
the building its being renovated
these
windows
stopped
me
in
my
tracks

Hipstamatic app using Tejas lens and Cano Cafenol film

every weekend
Hipstamatic
suggests a lens/film combo
for its users to go out and shoot with
this week's is
one of my favorite combinations

what do you think?

okay!

I'm going out
my plans are in flux
but
I know
I'm gonna have fun

go have fun!!!

three

this
was taken
 using
Hipstamatic's Dream Canvas 'film'
and
 John S lens

I took it some months ago
 outside my office building
 which is on
the corner of 42nd St and Seventh Avenue
 where
 there's always something going on

 I am not sure
 if they are forklifts
 or
some sort of Gator with a goiter

its Thursday
tomorrow
is
 Friday

the last
Fridaycation

this week it
spills
 over
 into
Labor Day
 Monday the office is closed!

Woot!

its monday again

I was feeling sad
 this morning
 thinking
that
I didnt get to the Staten Island Ferry
 on Friday
 that
 it was my
next
 to
 last
Fridaycation

 tho
 really
 its my last

everyone
 has this coming Friday off

I was walking from the subway to the office
 when someone called out
Hey Miss Daryl
it was one of the guys from our mailroom
he and I exchanged back to work greetings
he asked how I had enjoyed the summer
I explained how sad I was
 no more Fridaycations
he pointed out
 that this coming weekend
 was
actually
 a 4 day weekend
we have Monday off

  oh boy
did I ever perk up

made me telling you about the weekend
 less sad

my 'keratin'ing' of the hair was successful
 a mere 2 hours
 after
it was done
 I sweated up a storm
 my hair is not frizzy
its a little too flat right now
nevertheless
I am happy

Zhen combing in the goop

 adding heat

 bride of frankenstein look

finally smooth and sleek

Zhen
an artist at Brazilian Blow Outs
(doesnt that sound like a big sale event?)
was also pleasant to spend time with Saturday

I walked over to Park Avenue
 after
 I was done
to get photos
 of
 Niki de Saint Phalle's
wildly colorful mosaic statues
 along
the Park Avenue Mall
 from 50th to 60th Streets

this is
maybe
my favorite
its part of a threesome called
Les Trois Graces

but
my favorite shot of the day
was taken when I headed home
walking up Madison Avenue

why?
because
its
so very Madison Avenue
so very New York City

Have a great week
I'm going to!

shadows

took this on Friday
we both
 wondered
 what the flags were for

 Toonman
 thought
it was an internationally themed party
 I suggested
the party givers wanted a nautical theme

we were walking
 back
 from West 72nd St
 during
 our long route walk
which
would
provide
more exercise
 if
we kept walking
vs
 me stopping to snap
Toonman
 waiting not always patiently
tho
 this time
he had his little Flip along
 he took lots of video
 of
 me taking photos

 and
he was
looking for a location
 - yes, Suldog -
another video
is going to be shot
this coming week

meanwhile
I hope
you are
having
 as much fun
as
I am

sharing with

waiting

I used this photo
 in a collage
 I posted
 earlier this summer
when
 I was looking through
 my
Waiting
folder
I stopped to enjoy her happy face
 and
decided you would enjoy it too

today
I'm getting my hair
 'keratined'
or
whatever its called

here at the end of summer
 I am spending 2+ hours
 to make sure
 that the humidity
doesnt turn my hair to frizz

I've always been a step behind

no

 truth told
I just didnt want to spend the money
when I told that to Susanna
 she offered me a discount

how could I pass up a discount?

So thats where I am today

 yesterday
 struck down
by a case
 of
whelm
I didnt do anything

 well
 okay

we did
 take the long route trek
 up
 to
 96 St
 into the park
down
 to
 72nd St
around
 the Eleanor Roosevelt statue/circle
 and
 back

stopping many times for me to take and share Instragram fotos

got home
to learn
 via email from Hilary
 and
 a tweet/comment from Foolery
 that
there'd
 been
some crazyness
 near
 the Empire State Building

To say we
 New Yorkers
 are blasé
 is true
with
a caveat
 we dont get
all hand-wringy
but
we do worry about those hurt

 I tell you this honestly
exiting the subway into Times Square
 in the mornings
you never know
 if you'll see
just cops
 or
cops in full body armor with sub machine guns

 crazy people with the guns
terrorists crashing airliners
loony zealots setting off explosives in cars
its
New York City
 there's always something

taking it personally

last
Friday
 walking across East 4th Street
I stopped
and
looked
 back
 then
 up
you never know where a water tower might be
 no water tower
but
 this
 'grafitti'
that made me
grin
 stand straighter
and
take a photo
 of it
of course

 I'll take
affirmation
wherever
I find it

  its Thursday night
 tomorrow
(or today or even yesterday who knows when you'll read this)
I am relaxed
 I am hoping
 the photo adventure muse
 strikes
soon

I've no real plans for the next to last Fridayation of 2012
big sigh
 I am toying
 with a ride
 on the
Staten Island Ferry
 because
I havent been on it
since
 I was a kid

 I hear
 they no longer have
 galley slaves
 oaring the boat

  On that note

have a blog fodder filled weekend
or
just go out and have fun

three

sticklers
will be crying out
 foul!
there are
 6 umbrellas
here
not 3

well
so what?
what's it to you?
(a line my very funny father once said in reply to a relative's 'how are you?')

we watched The Hunger Games
speaking
of
foul

hey
 I was a little disappointed

I am not a fan of violence
however
in the first book
in the first 'game'
there were
 hourly challenges
 thrown at the youngsters
who survived
 the initial bloodbath
at the
cornucopia

 that
made it more interesting
along with the sponsor sent aids
helping Katniss and Peta survive
nevertheless
 I impressed
at how little
 aside from that
which
I am guessing was eliminated so they would avoid a PG or R rating
was changed

Have you seen or read The Hunger Games?

water towers

duh
of course
 this
isnt
an
iPhone
photo
to get a photo of a water tower/tank
one needs
zoom
so
obviously
Wednesday photos
will
be
BIG camera photos
 unless
 I get a water tower
 whilst
trolling
for
 non zoom shots
with
the
 iPhone

just sayin'

another excellent adventure

As you may recall
on Friday
 I was
 wishy washy
 about my plans
I was
whelmed
since that seems to be my default emotional state
I decided to go with the flow
and
 headed downtown
 armed with a list
 of the
streets and avenues
that make up the Mosaic Trail,
 my iPhone
 and
my Nikon D90
 but
with a small change
I wasnt totin' the BIG lens
 nope
 I popped on
 the
AF 35MM 1:2D lens
 its so light
you can
 almost
 forget
 its there
 however
 smaller fixed lens
 means
 no zoom
 means
 you
become
 the zoom
you
 move
 as close
to your subject
as you
can get
this means
 in the case
of
shooting lamp posts
 a lot
of
deep
 knee bends
 a lot
 of
crab walking
 when
you're too close
 or
not close enough
 are too damn lazy
 to stand up
 move
 and
 crouch
 down
again

 I forget
 or
 maybe
I have
 suppressed
 the number of times
 I did this
 in the short time
 about 90 minutes
 to walk/shoot the Mosaic Trail

my thighs
 feel
 as if
I did a weekend's worth of aerobics
 seriously

okay
 enough preamble
 lets get to the actual
amble

I got off the subway at 8th Street,
East 8th
(for some reason - shut up Lauren - I thought it was West 8th)
 and
Broadway
 stopping
to get snaps of the same lamp post I shot 2 weeks ago
when I stumbled onto these mosaics
 a left down
 to Astor Place
  over to Cooper Square/Cooper Union
(a school I fantasized about attending when I was in high school)
down
 to
St Marks Place
 across
 Third Avenue
down
to
Avenue A
 then
4th Street
 up
 to the
Bowery
finally
back
to
Broadway

 all along the way
 as
 I walked
 I took in
 a neighborhood
I'd never been to before
 so many little restaurants
so many old buildings
with stoops
(here in NYC we call those front steps 'stoops' okay I'll Google it and tell you why cause honestly I dont know)
people sitting out
sipping coffee
smoking
 taking in the late morning

interesting little shops
not a single
 'Mall store'
 in sight
there was also a lot of street art
I got a lot of photos
I'll be sharing them
over
 at
but
for sitting through all this
here's
a shot
 of the lamp post
 on the corner
of
Third Avenue and I forget

I hope
 your thighs
dont ache

 thanks
for
ambling along
with me
you know
it really is more fun with you along!

this
iPhoto photo
(is that redundant or an oxymoron?)
was taken on
West End Avenue l
ooking north
 from 80th Street

 no traffic
let me stand in the middle of the street

 I know
you know
 this is
a NYC blog

 recently
 I realized
 duh
 I take
 more photos
with my iPhone
 than
I do
with my BIG camera

SO
 from now on
 henceforth
 going forward
 99.99%
of this blog's photos
will be photos
 shot
 with an
 iPhone app

 if
you want
 to see photos
 I take when I travel
 or
go adventuring,
you'll need
 to click over
to my pretend-artsy blog

just sayin'

I have a massage appointment this morning

counting down to end of summer

another Friday
another Fridaycation
 my Fridaycations
 are winding down
 I refuse
to count
how
mamy
 are
 left
there are
too few

I am not sure what my plans are today
 I am feeling lazy
 I am feeling
whelmed

Recently
when I said
 that
to Toonman
 he
told me
 a comic
one that he cant recall the name of
the one
 he said
 we may not like
is using
'I'm whelmed, but not overly so'
 as the title
 to his act

 I said
I love it
 I love it

for eons
 I have
semi-jokingly
 wondered
 why
you can be
overwhelmed
 even
 underwhelmed

 but

 no one
ever
 says
 I'm whelmed

it tickles
my sense
of
 the absurb
 to claim
I am whelmed

 whichever
 state of feeling
I
 am
 going
 to do
 something
today

 yup

 meantime

while I am figuring it out
here's a photo
 to enjoy
 or
 whatever
 feeling
 you're
 feeling!

Toonman said
 it could be
 a launch pad
at Kennedy Center

 its
actually
me looking up at the sky
 in
Times Square
at the intersection
 of
Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street
 using
 my iPhone's Hipstamatic App's
W Mag FreePak with the Wonder lens and W40 film

Enjoy Friday
I know I will

three

After
you get to the
Brooklyn side
of the bridge
 you walk
 down stairs
  to your left
on Prospect Street
bear around the corner
keep to the right
on
Old Fulton Street

 just
when
you are thinking
you might be lost
these
three
 are there
 to point the way

they seem to be saying
yes,
this is the way
 to
Brooklyn Bridge Park
have a nice visit

and I did

Googled and Googled
and
 could not come up
 with
any
artist
 for this piece
 if anyone knows
 anything
about it
 and
 can share
I would appreciate it!

water towers

I suspect
 this was taken
on the Eastside
but
 I dont know for sure
 I know
I keep promising
 to make notes
when
 I take water tower/tank shots
 but
to be honest
 and
isnt
 honesty the best policy
aside from the water tanks
I snapped in Brooklyn
 all
the
 other
 water tower photos
 are
 months
 even
years
old

 well
 before
I promised
to keep a log
sigh

I'm Late!

I feel
 a little
like
Alice's Mad Hatter
racing about
shouting
I'm Late, I'm Late
sorry
but
some
Mondays are busier than others
 so some Mondays
I hustle to get things work related done
 before
 I can head over here

 here I am

that rain I whined about in Friday's post?
never happened
well
 it happened
but
 in a window of time
 before and after
 which
I could have gotten any number of things done
and
didnt
 tho
I did get my beautification started earlier

 the threat of storms
on a Friday
apparently
chased away more than my plans
to go walk the Mosaic Trail
my darling Sandy
who blow dries my hair into obedience
 on Saturday mornings
 texted around 4:30 on Friday
 to say
wanna come by now?
I did

Not only did Nicole give me a amazing shampoo/scalp massage
Sandy bought a bottle of Malbec
we sipped as she styled
I might need to switch my appointments to Fridays

 Saturday
 I slept in a bit
before
going to Polished for my mani/pedi
I called first so I didnt confuse anyone by showing up a day early
 the rest of Saturday
was spent hanging with Toonman and the cats

Sunday
I got down to the East Village
a walk on Mosaic Trail was not in the cards
but
a return to Fishs Eddy
brunch with a dear friend
 was

  Jess and I
 met a long time ago
on a soap opera chat board
 it turned out
we worked near one another
 had a lot in common
over the years a friendship has grown
 through
 her marriage to Joe
the birth of their son Harlan
 visits to their Brooklyn apartment
before they moved to Austin, TX
where Shane was born
Jess and Joe with the boys come to NYC every summer to visit family friends and me
I got to spend some great face time with Jess
 at
ABC Carpet's Pipa restaurant
 after that
we wandered ABC's main floor
oh boy
could I ever get into trouble

 a necklace called my name
 Jess shouted louder
'step away, step away, think about it from over here'
I didnt buy it
she tried to convince me that I was creative,
could take a jewelry making course
make my own
Did I mention Jess is extremely creative?
 she is a amazing
she started making onsies for friends having babies
turned that into a mini business with an Etsy shop for a while

I digress

later in the afternoon
she texted me
do not buy the necklace
she'd found beads
 just like the ones
on the ABC necklace
and
 she had gold wire
she's going to make me a 'knock off'

So
all in all
a good weekend
despite
not getting the photos I wanted

thanks for tagging along
its always more fun with you!

I did get one photo
to share with you
oh
if you look closely you'll see a water tower!

street art

Took me a little while
 surfing the internets
to learn about this street art
 photographed
from a taxi
stopped briefly
at a traffic light
when I took the shots
 I had no idea
where
I actually was
 I mean
I knew
 I was in a cab
 duh
where the cab was
that was the question
 its good
 I took several photos
 because
that enabled me to track down the location

the corner of Prince and Mulberry Streets
in
Nolita
(NOrth of Little ITAy)

the clue
I followed first
was the sign

then
 under the other graphic

eventually
I stumbled
onto
 a blog
about street art

 fascinating

it surrounds us

 either
 its taken for granted
 or
its unnoticed
 because
we're in a hurry

how did I find what it was?
who created it?

Googled
 prince mulberry polkadot street art

 honest

it got me
here

waiting

this time
 I
was about
to
snap a shot
 of that little dog,
I think its a Maltese,
when
 its person
 walked out
 of
 Europan
 a local (franchised) coffee shop
on Broadway at 78th Street
 I took the photo anyway
 used
 iPhone Hipstamatic App's
 Jane 'lens'
 with
Clauch 72 Monochrome 'film'

doesnt that pup
 seem
to be saying
hey! she was taking my photo!

Fridaycation

Well
 today was supposed to be
 another
trip down to the East Village
a walk along
 the Mosiac Trail
another trip to Fishs Eddy
 to exchange two bowls

 but

 its

raining

 raining

 raining

ugh

rain
 is not good
 for either
camera or hair
 I am not sure
what I am going to do

while
I think about it
weigh my options
hope
the weather improves

I give you this snapshot

an Instagram
I took
while
 on the M train
from Fifth Avenue/53rd St back to Times Square
after
a quick 'trim' of my tresses
 the goddess
who cuts my hair
trims
 'bangs'
(hair code for all the hair framing your face)
 between cuts
 for
 free

my hair
has been growing out
an odd expression, non?

 seriously

I am not going off on that track

 I read
 (and was emailed, thanks Lisa)
 about
 the free download
of
 Rays
 a special effects editing app
 not to be confused
 with
 my Ray

vanity made me try it out on that photo
saved the setting as

I dont
 usually
 post
non nyc photos
here
 but
today
 I wanted to share
 another
look back

 Santa Fe

those 3 large balls
are part of a

 that stands
outside
the Farmer's Market in the Railyard area

fishs eddy

this week's
 Fridaycation
 was spent
wandering
 the East Village,
 and
 the edge
 of the
Flatiron District
 because
 I was headed
 to a wonderful store
Fishs Eddy
 on
19th and Broadway
 their website
  here
lists the 8th Street stop
 on the Nor R train
as
the
stop
 closest
 to the store

I wasnt really thinking
 about this
 when I headed out
 of course
 now
I realize
 that was absurd
 my trek
from
 8th to 19th
 via
Broadway
 with a small detour
 due
 to
Union Square
 was
hot,
muggy
 and
yet
 filled
with photo ops
 so
if you are headed to Fishs Eddy
have no interest in photo ops
get off the N or R train at 14th its a lot closer

 However
 had
 I
 not
gotten off
 at
 8th
 and
 had
not
 had to turn
round and round
 trying to figure out
which way
 was
 up
and
which
was
down
 I wouldnt have noticed
the mosaic lamp posts
I blogged about yesterday
just scroll down and you'll see

I did figure
 out
 which
way
was
 uptown
 when I spotted
 tower

and
 all the amazing flying buttresses

next
 I walked
past
stopped
and
went back to see

then
 it was
the
that caught my eye

 finally
19th Street

that's Fishs Eddy
and
this

 is what
overwhelms
your senses
as you
enter

aside
 from
some great old diner
 and
 long gone eatery
dinnerware
they sell lots of things
 you,
okay,
I wish
I had some use for
or
 some one to gift

I didnt buy any of those
I did
buy
some dishes, bowls and a new mug
made in America

the rest of the weekend
was spent
 in
 shallow
 pursuit
of
beautification
local errands
 and
a lot of staying
 inside
 out
of
 the
 horrific humidity

I hope you had a great weekend
thanks for coming along
its really more fun with you!
