out with the old, in with the new

that's the old damaged vanity. see that missing corner? my bad.

the new vanity and basin, tho the lighting in this shot makes it look as if its a countertop, its not, its a basin.

It seem appropriate to do this post tonight...out with the old, in with the new...especially after reading Hilary's post at The Smitten Image. Read her post, look at my photos .. I promise you except for her son Jeffrey and our dealing with the flippin' plumber, its the same experience .. (okay, so I didn't spend 3 days at Frank's or help, but still).

wordless wednesday

a solution!

This is sort of like Husbandisms but its not about MY husband.

This is about our friend (landlord, and someone I think of as my big brother) who has a small garage as part of the brownstone he owns and lives in.

People, who are - fill in your own favorite derogatory verb - keep parking in his driveway.

This ticks him off in ways you cannot imagine unless of course you've had the misfortune of parking there yourself.

He has tried everything:

  • a BIG sign posted on the garage door; at night LIGHTS focus on it so you can't miss seeing it.
  • a sign made to order screwed to an old post the city had put up to announce the vagaries of alternate side of the street parking. The same cops who regularly ignore ticketing people parked in the driveway took down his sign and warned him if he put it back up, they'd fine him!
  • had these two signs made up and had the post set in concrete so they cant be moved easily and placed them one at each side of the opening to the driveway. Someone not long ago trying to park in the driveway backed into one knocking it down.
  • stuck sticky signs on the windows of cars parked in the driveway, called the cops, and had them towed ..

If you can think of it, he's done it.

All to no avail.

However, we think the solution is at hand.

His son, in for the holidays from L.A., gave him this as a Christmas present.

We think it might just work.

thank you(s)

Thanks to Dyln.
She had a random drawing
I won a Fred & Bessie magnet that was designed by Flea ..
Wondering where F&B are these days?
I can tell you they are in Texas visiting with AFF (Anglophile Football Fanatic).
So pop on over and see what they are up to.

This is different; this is rather perplexing to me.

It arrived last night in that brown wrapper
With no note other than those cute/clever little business card thingies
a lovely packet of note cards.
I want to thank whoever sent this, but I dont know who you are ....
Mystery solved.
Thank you Kate!

conspicuous consumption continues

Cookies Lynn sent from Dad's ... ALL GONE
I owe Lynn an apology
when these arrived I emailed: 'oh you shouldnt have'
Well, she emailed back, its a way to include Husband
in the gifting process.
And then Husband opened the cookie box
the man ate 99% of the cookies himself
I was wrong.
Please do this again next year.

happy hanukkah

being crafty

first I saved this clever postcard 'template' Marie Reed shared a few months ago

next I clicked over to picnik.com and used their text and shape tools
after it was all decorated
I used 4x6 photo paper (glossy side down) to print it
using the standard setting on my Canon iP4300

after it dried
I chose a photo that I thought was apropos for the person I was gifting
printing the photo on the glossy side
using the Canon's photo on photo paper setting for a 4x6 borderless print ..
punch a hole in one corner to run ribbon through
voila ..
a gift hang tag to make even Martha Stewart jealous!

this is a photo of one of Barney's Christmas windows decorations last year
and its going to hang on the prezzie I got my bff D.

mail call

Yesterday afternoon the concierge (thanks La) (aka Husband) called to say "a packet has arrived marked 'Royal Mail', have you been corresponding with the Queen?"

"The" Queen, no. Big wink here.

When I got home, did I first:

(a) kiss Husband
(b) stomp around in a bad mood
(c) grumble about the cats being underfoot
(d) race into the loo, coat still on to .. pee
(e) all of the above
(f) most of the above

Before I opened the packet?

What was in it?

A thank you for making some blog award badges for my blog bud Trixie, an Oz-ite who lives in UK. Inside was a pretty Christmas card and a cute little critter with magnets in its paws ... so in order to show him off better I posed him ... the one with him hanging from the metal cat is a little .. well .. I know Trixie will laugh.

Thanks, Trix!

storm king wall

this is art ..
its titled: Storm King Wall
it zig zags through the trees across
Storm King Art Center in Mountainview,NY.
The artist is Andy Goldsworthy

Deck the Halls MEME foistered upon me by the oh so good Flea ... SUPERTAGGED me ... as if tagging me was not enuf. So here goes:

Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Are you ready for a peek into who I am? Well a very well kept secret until now is that in addition to liking fruit cake, I adore egg nog even the kind that comes in a milk carton. I can have hot chocolate anytime but egg nog .. once a year

Does Santa wrap presents or set them under the tree? Santa leaves nicely wrapped presents from others to us on top of the chest that has been temporarily in front of the (non working) fire place for about 7 years (NO I am not exaggerating, I am a fucking saint), the menorah resides on the mantle just above/behind it.

Stuff I send gets wrapped in tissue paper and Fedex pax .. or tissued in a pretty seasonally appropriate color/themed gift bag

Colored lights on tree or white? If I had a tree there would be no lights or icicles .. just whimsical truly goyish decorations and popcorn ..

When do you put your decorations up? Cards go on the mantle as they arrive and they along with the menorah is it for me. I might dust .. and every so often I rearrange them. Lets face it some cards are prettier and deserve a better position on the mantle ... so if you want to be up there next to the menorah, don't send me a kitten in a Santa hat.

What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Egg nog pie

Favorite Holiday memory as a child: Watching Miracle on 34th Street on Million Dollar Movie every time it played over the holiday weekend. I guess it was about 50 times... we, my sister and I, watched Yankee Doodle Dandy even more times but that isnt a Christmas memory .. I threw it in for extra credit.

When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? Truth?

Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? No. We pretend to be gentile and open gifts on Christmas morning ...

How do you decorate your Christmas tree? I don't even have a Christmas cactus. But if my Italian friends do a tree I am there decorating

Snow! Love it or Dread it? I love the idea of snow, the walking in it not so much

Can you ice skate? Of course I can .. even a klutz can occasionally surprise

Do you remember your favorite gift? Every gift is my favorite, til I open the next one. I am that shallow

What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Shallow answer: Presents!
PC answer: Family

What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? egg nog pie

What is your favorite tradition? Getting presents

Which do you prefer, Giving or Receiving? I strictly observe the ancient custom: 1 for them, 1 for me.

What is your favorite Christmas Song? The Christmas Song .. you know: Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose ...

Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum? In moderation YUM

Ever recycled a Christmas present? Moi?

That was fun-ish ... Anyone who wants to do this please do.. as a gift to you all I am not tagging anyone.

waiting, impatiently - special edition

Husband waiting patiently as I stop mid climb for a photo op.
No, not of him, of the clock against the sky
but there he was waiting, patiently.

Last nite as I was uploading the photo Husband suggested I use it for the 'waiting eternally' theme; I agreed when he added 'your friends will get it' (or something like that I was admittedly not listening closely, I was posting!) hence the special edition designation.

new york city bloggers meet

This part Sunday, after a flurry of emails, I met Elizabeth Wix at Le Pain Quotidien, a restaurant (on 19th Street inside ABC Carpet & Home) which (according to their online blurb) combines a traditional French-Belgian bakery with many long, wooden communal tables for large AND small groups as well as cozier seating arrangements, offering a selection of organic artisan breads, pastries and coffees at the counter, with a countryside restaurant serving breakfast, gourmet sandwiches, salads, and soup.

Some of you will know Elizabeth as the talented writer/photographer behind About New York whose latest book Jane in Winter is on sale now for holiday giving.

We were joined by her friend Celeste who was gracious enough to not only watch two shutterbugs to snap pix of their beverages

she was kind enough to snap a shot of Elizabeth and me

We had a lovely chat, and I can highly recommend the curry tofu 'sandwich' ... and the cafe au lait, but drink carefully .... its SO big you could fall in.
