the drive home

i took this
 out the window
of
 the taxi
 we took home wednesday

there was all this green

once
naked tree limbs
now
small green buds

riverside park is looking very spring-like

wowza

i see lots of sunset photos on instagram
personally
i am
way too lazy
to go out
to
get
 a sunset shot

i get home
i get into my pjs
i do not go out

but
over the last few months
toonman hasnt been feeling great

i have been doing
a lot of stuff
he always did

truth be told
i had no idea
he did so much
or
more
 to the point
that
 i was so spoiled
did so little

anyway
monday night
i schlepped
the trash cans to the curb
looked around
the sunset was incredible
went back in
got the phone
went back out
got that shot

now i 'get' why people go sunset shooting

squint, you'll see it

the iphone pro camera app in hdr setting is very sensitive

i really thought
was
standing
perfectly
still

the blurs in this shot belie that
oh well

nevertheless
nestled
between
the branches of that blossoming tree
and the top of the WTC
is
a
water tower!

perfectly purple

this past weekend
 i spent saturday
on/in
'me' day
massage
facial
wash/blow dry
mani/pedi

a lovely time
just me myself and i
indulging

i get off the crosstown bus on 79th
 just past fifth avenue
the walk along east 79th
is lined with grand old mansions
some filled with art galleries
but
this one
with

massive display of flowers
is the greek embassy

interesting to me
is the fact that
the greek people are having financial issues

these floral displays
seem wrong

poetry in motion

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
.. Wordsworth

the short version ...

 my friend carrie
met
me
for
lunch

looked up
oh boy
two
water towers!

back to work ...

always
a place
with
 intense security

this past week
brought
 even more
of
 new york's finest
to
the oculus
under
the world trade center

thanks in advance

I am reposting this article for
Best Friends Animal Society
an organization
my sister and i support and want to help

Best Friends - Save Them All(R)
Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in SoHo is officially open.

as of Tuesday, April 4th the Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in SoHo is officially open. That’s huge news not only for the animals, but for you, too!

For years — at adoption events and through our foster program in support of Animal Care Centers of NYC — we’ve been working hand-in-hand to save the lives of homeless pets in the city. Now, with the new adoption center, you’ll have a place where you can be even closer to the animals.

On any given day here, about 30 dogs and cats from Animal Care Centers of NYC or one of our other local animal welfare partners will be waiting to find loving homes. And you’re invited to come meet every single one of them. Whether you want to adopt, volunteer, or become involved in some other way, the center’s doors are open!

Plus, while you’re visiting or volunteering, you can take in all the sights. You can learn more about Best Friends with interactive displays, see newborn kittens being bottle-fed in the nursery, and more.

Best Friends Pet Adoption Center
307 West Broadway (between Canal and Grand)
Monday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Sunday, 12 noon – 6 p.m.

Your kind support has helped make the new adoption center possible, as well as lifesaving programs all across the country. For that, everyone here at Best Friends, especially the animals, is grateful.

Thank you for all that you do for homeless pets in New York and beyond.

flea market find

the old flea market on columbus/77th
has
morphed
 into
a high end market
no fleas

this photo
was
taken
 back
 way back
 before
it
transformed

i love those old tin cars and trucks
wish i'd bought a few

muted tones

a lot of life is standing around waiting
if you get a seat its a good commute

an aside
 to
 all my comment leavers
apologies
 for not replying
either
promptly
or
not at all

i could say
i didnt have a seat
but
truth is
life
has been
on
 the express track

iced over tower

taken by a friend
right after
 the ice storm
back in early march

that tower/tank sits atop a building
on
87th street and riverside drive

baa baa baa

(photo borrowed from West Side Rag)

grazing on leaves and assorted debris
in a tree bed
on 75th Street
between
Riverside Drive and West End Avenue

these visitors
 to
 a near-by school
were part of show and tell

the grade schoolers now know
where sweaters come from

morning light

well
someone
was confused yesterday morning

someone
posted the under the canopy photo
on
the
wrong
blog

you know what makes it worse?
i didnt realize it til i went to post this photo for friday/today!

i was going to caption it
here's a lovely way to end the month

sigh

instead i had to explain why a canopy photo

i really need a vacation

denver has water towers too!

my friend
 mary and i
were
supposed
 to be
sunning
ourselves
in the caribbean
 this week
but
 life
got in the way
 i
 stayed home
she
 went to visit friends
in
 denver
 and
sent me this

daffs

my friend donna
is
maybe
my best
certainly
 one of my oldest
friends

not in age
 necessarily
but
i have known her
almost as long as
i have known
toonman

sunday
i brought her
guide books for barcelona
she gave me coffee
we shared some conversation

noticing the small vase of dying daffs
i wouldnt let her throw them out
 til i took a photo
with
 her iphone!

posed them
next
 to
that charming
little
 joy brown
sculpture

contrasts

those fabulous balloons
are a strong contrast
to
 that person walking below

no, not the one walking down the hall
the one walking just to the left ... see him?

also
 it turns out
those balloons are an art installation
part of an exhibition
world water day
this past tuesday
sponsored by stella artois

they are
'water clouds'

lacy limbs

last week we had a nor'easterner hit
actually
it didnt hit too hard here in nyc
but
the suburbs and upstate got slammed

i came home to this scene
icy snow covered tree branches

by the time
the sun set
it all had
melted away

oh yeah
today's the first day of spring

what a face!

i took this a few years ago
on a true spring day
not
 like
these
recent bazaarly snowy march days

it was day
to sit
by
an open
 door
or
window
that pup
was
 doing just that
as
his
 people
 wined/dined
just behind

water tower

spotted this
on
my walk down broadway
a week or so ago

the light reflecting
off
the glass
makes
 an interesting pattern
 on
 the bricks

foodie post

i am not a true foodie
i can be picky
outspokenly so
but
i do love
going to
new to me
restaurants

my friend amy
always
takes me somewhere new to me

this past sunday
i met her for udon
(japanese noodles)
at
tsuru ton tan
on east 16 street

the entryway is fabulous

the chandelier
looks
like
a
circlet of huge pearls

as if the alphabet threw itself against the wall

the alphabet theme continues through the bar area

thats rope
weaving its way
behind
another bar
where
there's seating for eating

there's a downstairs dining area

and
an upstairs

our table was a step up from the main floor

it was cozy
simple
clean

the food was delicous
the black bowl contains duck tsuke udon
the blue bowl is sukiyaki udon
lots of mushrooms an egg veggie and beef

not pictured was the side order
chunks of tatsuta (garlic fried) chicken

perfect meal to share
perfect for a frigid sunday

the menu is extensive
the wait staff is very happy to help
especially if you're a first time guest

tea
 - a lovely nutty light tea -
served
in those
keeps your hands cozy
mugs

purim tradition

breads bakery
on east 16th

having sampled

they were lining up
waiting
 to order
to pay

what?
humantaschen

its purm!

those are not very traditional
they're filled with
chocolate

traditional puim humantaschen are
prune or poppyseed filled
occasionally you'll find some with fruit fillings

breads bakery has a huge assortment
better hurry if you want some
purim will be over before you realized it was here

walking the dogs

taken in a hurry

i was
going
 to
crop this
but
its not well focused so ...

i wondered
is she a dog walker
or
are those her own dogs

i'll never know

spring clean up

well
 its not quite spring
in fact
as i write this
 on
 thursday
 i know
snow is predicted for friday
frigid temps predicted for the weekend
nevertheless
new york city
is
shaking off winter
embracing spring

filling in the pot holes
putting up those
 'bridges'
whilst
 repairing
building exteriors
rooftops

yup
time to get crackin'

point of view

i look up a lot
i saw these lovely branches
contrasting
with
that
beautiful old fire escape
i knew
i needed to take a photo
