taking measure

i leave for the office
 very early
 we're early people
 my bosses and i

new york is the city that never sleeps
see that man bent over there?
 he's packing it in
 it was barely 7 a.m.
 his job
 was done for the day
 at this spot
 anyway

 soon
 that empty street
 will be filled with people
 walking
 from
the subway
to
 their
offices

 its amazing
 how fast
 an empty street
 can fill

 if you follow me
 (as zipcode10024)
on
 instragram
 you'd see
 how different
 it looks
 from
 day to day
 at
7 a.m.

 the other morning
i had
 a
 9 a.m. appointment

the number
 of
 people
on
the street
 was
beginning
 to increase

by the time
 i got back
 to
 times square
the crowds
were
overwhelming

that man
 taking
 measurements
 for some project or other
 would not
have been able
 to stand there
 and
get
a clear view
an accurate measurement

i bet
 he like me
 prefers
 the empty early morning street

what time do you go to work?
is it crowded?

  1. LOVE those 'off' hours, as I think you know. . . .
    Nicely represented!

  2. I'm an early to work kinda girl as well, I'm usually traveling by about 6:30-7am, the freeway is already pretty busy by then. I love the light in this shot, great early morning atmosphere

  3. I'm at work by 5:30 most mornings -- but of course my commute is across the hall. :)

  4. I bet they are putting in a new water tower there. Right?

  5. Work????? Not a chance, I'm retired :). It's all play now! When I was working, I was an early bird.

  6. I usually start walking to work at 6:00 am.
Not a soul around at that time, just lots of deer, and I love it!
I don't think I've ever seen Times Square when the crowd was not overwhelming, but I love that too.

  7. Early morning is the best time of the day, especially in the city! Super shot Daryl.

  8. Daryl, nice! I must admit that I don't see many sunrises anymore! The joys of retirement! When I worked night shift I used to love the dawn. Before most people got moving.

  9. I'm grateful I don't have to contend with crowds very often. When I worked shifts, I loved nights because we didn't have all the office people to contend with.

  10. I guess I didn't realize how early you go in. I leave home around 7:10 and get to school at 7:30 and there is usually some traffic but nothing worth writing home about ~

  11. So nice seeing the street empty! Not much of a crowd for me ... solo traffic through the kitchen to my office!

  12. I drive into work, start at 8am and usually get there about 15-20 minutes early
Maybe a stop at Dunkin along the way Our traffic isn't too bad, not like a big city but always quicker in the am than on the drive home at 430.

  13. The alarm goes off at 5:30 and lately I'm up like a shot. With all the crap going on in my life, I'm too nervous to hit the snooze bar. I'm better off if I get up and do something so lately, I'm on the road between 6:45 & 7 and I'm liking it a lot...traffic is way lighter. But getting there early does not allow me to leave early...I still have to fight that 5 PM surge. Ugh!

  14. On my last job I had to be at work at 7AM so I would get up at 5AM and leave the house about 6:30. I loved it because I would miss all the highway traffic both in the morning and in the afternoon on the way home. Now that I am retired I never get up that early:)
