  2. this is great. i like how there is a range in how much the fine is. I'd love to know more about that, than again, maybe not...
Your sky is pretty too, Daryl.

  3. I don't even want to know what constitutes the difference between a $5 spit and a $100 spit. Funny sign, but also nice antique!

  4. That's quite a range for the fines. I wonder what determined how much you would pay? Maybe tapirgal is right - I don't want to know.

  5. I just have to wonder what kind of spitting one would have to do to get the $100 fine. Or maybe I don't want to know! :)

Actually, I think they should bring these signs/fines back; I've seen lots of people spitting. Gross! I thought we had evolved more than that; just goes to show what I DON'T know!

  6. This reminds me of a friend who attended school in Montana(she was a city girl). A sign in each of her classrooms said, "No spitting." She was confused until she saw people chewing tobacco.

  9. I've only seen signs like that in China! Great picture!
Daryl, I mentioned you on my site and there is a little 'award' over there for you that was passed on to me recently.
I love seeing NYC through your eyes.

  10. Now who or what decides what is $5 and what is $100? Perhaps plain spit and tobacco spit:) I guess those were the big problems back then. Simpler times.

  12. The penalty for spitting should be a lot more and enforced - it's a filthy habit. YUK!

  13. I completely let that one pass me by.

    Great capture!

  14. This is super. Dontcha just love those old signs that point to an earlier time when such things as spitting on a sidewalk were of concern?

    Great photo!

As Tapirgal pointed out, there's a big difference between $5 and $100...does the fine depend upon the size or the constituency of the glob?

    Yuk!

  15. It's against the law to spit on the sidewalks here in Alberta. I don't know what the fine is but I totally agree with it.

There is hardly anything more gaggy then stepping in someone's phlegm. Gag!

  16. Fine should still be in place. I hate spitting. Fine should actually quadruple that one

  17. You don't even WANT to know what they do to you if you're caught spitting GUM on the sidewalk...

  18. Okay. I'm coming to embrace the moments when I read one thing and it says another because truly, it keeps my life entertaining.

I was fascinated by the font and colors on this sign. Then I read, "Dept. of Death." That seemed extreme so I reread. I do think my take is more effective, however. :)

  19. So, do you suppose they gave stiffer penalties based on the look or the texture of said spit? Ewww! That is funny!

  20. Spitting is frowned upon, but peeing on the beach is encouraged.

I don't make these rules up, I just live by them.

  21. Is the size of the spit what determines the dollar amount because I hadn't thought of that before!

  22. Great capture! I have the "no spitting the floors" in my kitchen!
