the way they were

Today, June 16th, would have been my late parents 65th wedding anniversary.

The top photo was taken the weekend they met (at another couple's wedding)

I took the photo of them with their 50th wedding anniversary cake.

There's a bride & groom on top because Mom told me
they didn't have a wedding cake at their wedding reception.

She never had a bride & groom keepsake.
I bought the happy little couple at a cookware shop;
it still sits where Mom put it
on a shelf in her beloved breakfront.

  20. Over fifty years together. Wow. What a fine handsome couple they look! And you look quite like your mum I think, from what I discern anyway. What a great way to remember them and I love that first photo. That's where I realised you're like your mum! Or mom (sorry).

Anyway, I tagged you with a photo meme. You don't have to do it, but it is quite fun and pretty effortless. If you don't want to do it, that's fine but I thought you'd like it. I think you might have done it before actually...

  24. What a nice way to remember your parents. 50 years is quite an accomplishment.

I saw where TSannie said your dad reminded her of an actor and I thought Yeah....Van Johnson.

  27. Very lovely tribute to parents you so obviously loved. The photo of their first meeting is a miracle of love at first sight.

Thanks for you reading of my poem. Your comment was lovely. And the avatar is an old self portrait. Glad you like it.

  28. They make a beautiful couple, so obviously delighted with each other, and what a lovely gesture of love from their daughter to get them the wedding cake they never had.

PS Your dad looked a lot like a cousin of mine when he was younger :).

  29. Lovely pictures! It's wonderful that you have them, and wonderful that they had at least 50 years together! I hope the same will be true for you and Ray. Ralph and I had just 18 years. But what a grand 18 years it was!

  30. Wonderful photographs of your parents both as a young and then mature couple. That's so sweet that you got the bride and groom for their 50th anniversary. My parents would have had their 65th anniversary this August if they were still alive. Hard to believe that my mother died 19 years ago. She was only 65. My Dad died 8 years after she did at 73.

  32. I am tearing up because this entry is so moving. You are a blessed daughter. I love your birdhouse photo as well... can't wait to stop back again soon. I followed Nomi over from her delightful garden blog. Stop by my garden sometime.

  33. Aww that's a lovely tribute to your parents and their lifelong love. Beautifully done, Daryl. :)

  34. Reading TSannie's comment, in the first photo, I see a resemblance between your Dad and Ed Begley Jr.

  37. such a cute couple....My parents would have been married 65 years also this year....On the 4th. of July....she always used to say that they married on the 4th of July and there were fireworks ever since....but i don't think she meant that in a good way?

  40. How cool. My parents would have had their 50th last October if my dad was still alive. I got to stand in for him for the "date"... but I'm quite sure it was a pale substitute. Very cool that they got to have their cake topper after all that time.
