ice melt

tribeca hardware
 on
 chambers street
 has
 had this in their window
 for
weeks

thursday morning
as i walked by
i had to stop
the
irony

frosty
is standing there
hawking
ice melt

that's the stuff
 tossed onto sidewalks
 to
 keep
 melting snow
from
 forming ice
when
the temps elevator
up/down

in the distance

look there
above all that snow

water towers!!!

yeah
not so pretty
3 days
 after it falls

actually
 i took that photo
 on
 monday

yup

tuesday
 it was disgusting
even dirtier
ugh

not quite a record setter

first of all did you know that the storm had a name?
i had no idea snow storms had names
this one was called
jonas

now
 of course
 i am wondering
if they do this
 alphabetically
the way they do
 tropical storms and hurricanes
if so
what were the other 9
where did they happen

jonas did not break the record for snow fall in central park
the snow measurement is done there because it doesn't change
apparently snow falls elsewhere do

jonas left 26.8 inches of snow in central park
the record holder
whose name i dont know
was
the 2006 storm with 26.9 inches

way to go nameless 2006 storm

i woke on saturday
went to the window
holy white out

got dressed and headed out

walked down to riverside drive
looked back up
west 80th

crossed riverside drive

riverside park was empty for the moment
no
wait
thats a runner there in the distance

this is my favorite spot
outside the park
looking up the drive

later in the day i went outside for a minute
to get a shot of that car
the snow that accumulated
on the back
made it look like it was speeding
to me anyway

sunday morning
it was frigid
but sunny
apparently only our part of the street was shoveled
made walking difficult

when i got up to west end avenue
it was life as usual

coming back several hours later
this car was being dug out
by
3 young men as the owner watched

snowpocalypse

this is one of my favorite snow photos
i took it
in
 riverside park
while the snow was still falling

if i am not mistaken
(as if)
it was taken during
the insane two day snow fall
january 6-8, 1996

20+ inches of snow
fell
on nyc

not
the worst storm in nyc history
no
the worst was 1947
i was born in february 1948
mom used to say
there was snow on the ground
when she went into hospital
and
snow was still there when she went home with me
of course
 back then
you didnt have
 a baby
one day and go home the next

i am posting this in honor of this weekend's predicted
snowpocalypse

lets see if it can out snow '47

west 72nd street

the light
the clouds
those naked branches
all work for me

look
way off
there
 in
 the distance
two water towers!

blather! - edited

its sunday afternoon
 i have done
 all my beautifying
 all of my errands
 its pretty cold out
 lots of icy wind

i am glad
i have monday
 (today for you'all)
 off

 love
 long weekends

i would have loved a long walk in the park
 but
 its really too cold
 for
walks
 without
destinations
plus
toonman is busy with football playoffs

did i tell you i am going to barcelona?
yup

 booked the airline tix
got the time/place set
for meeting our apartment rental host
 who also sent
 a list of local restaurants
 and
links to points of interest
we might want to see

 now
i need
 everyone
 to
 concentrate
send
good thoughts
 good vibes
 keep it from snowing
 until
 after we take off
february 2

 you see
 while
 it may
 not
snow
 in january

believe it or not
there have been snowless januarys in new york
but
 it
always
 always
 always
snows in february

 i could tell you
about
 all the birthday celebrations
 affected by snow
 there have been many
 so
 everyone
please
keep
good thoughts for no snow til after february 2 .. ok?

 good

- edit -

i set this post to publish
and
 this happened
yes
snow

sigh

end edit

saturday began rainy

ended semi sunny

in-between
i had a spa day
followed by
hair appointment
where i went crazy
used
manic panic
a temporary 'dye'
feeling very rock'n roll

a forever family

reaching
 back
 into
the archives
to
 share
this

this past summer
 down along the battery
my friend's supply/grooming business
participated
in
 a neighborhood block party
it included a dog adoption/rescue group
 badass brooklyn animal rescue

that sleepy puppy was adopted
at the previous event

he's living with a wonderful family
as you can see he's much loved

wet streets

a week or two ago
when it was still
unseasonably
warm
which by the way it no longer is
took this
during
my walk
to
the subway

i love walking
no matter the weather
well
ok
 if
it was snowing
or
if
 there was a monsoon
i'd
take the local to the express

but
generally speaking
i
walk
to the express

my thinking is
if there's a longer than 5 minute wait for the local
i can walk to the express in 8minutes
why stand around waiting

lately
at 6:15ish
the wait is
10-15 minutes

seriously

i think the clock showing how long till the next train
is
fabulous

no standing on the platform
staring down the
dark
empty
track
wishing the train would come

how did we ever do that

looking east

took this
from
the windows at the office
facing
east

the sunrise
 was
 just
beginning

i really
 was
after
shot
of
the traffic
the windows
the 'watch out' tall stacks
lights

it was a cold morning
see the hot air
wafting up

there might even be a water tower
in there somewhere

traffic

the other morning
it was barely 10 degrees
when i left home

i cant imagine what the temperature
was on the water
the wind was intense
icy
brutal
just walking across washington
(i call it wind tunnel street)
to the office
brought tears to my eyes
made my nose run
hell
if i could have run i would have

the orange boat
 is
 the inbound
staten island ferry

the middle 'boat'
is
actually
a barge being pulled by a tug
(tug was faster than i was and moved out of frame)

the white boat
 is
another commuter ferry

taken from the 43rd floor
with
 my new camera's
(olympus  om-d e-m10)
4/3rds 300mm lens

new year new post

i have been doing pretty much
nothing
 since leaving the office
 last year

 i love saying that
 last year

 or
my other favorite
 which was
 see you next year

i did the beautification
 so necessary
 to keep up appearances

 i have eaten
 non stop
really
 i have

 just last night
i had almost an entire bag of oatmeal raisin cookies
i tell myself
 its oatmeal
how bad can it be

 it can be really bad

 or
the lightly sea salted potato chips
 i think
 lightly
 is
 the word
 i lean on

we had our annual new year's day breakfast
 toonman
makes
a huge pan of potatoes and onion
 another of scrambled eggs

in the past
we've washed it down
 with
 left over champagne

not this year
 this year
 it was coffee
 and
 i am sorry my love
 but
those eggs were just not dry enough for me
suffice it to say
i had potatoes with onions with my coffee

we took a very short walk new year's eve day
i wanted to take the new camera out
although
toonman's legs called a halt to the walk
 rather quickly
i did get a few shots i liked

we went
 to
 a late lunch early dinner
with
our 'son' and his girlfriend

we watched a lot of movies
i especially liked
 the hateful eight
 joy
 the revenant

toonman said
who doesn't like a good revenge story
but
i think for the scenery alone
 the revenant
is an awesome film

 the hateful eight
 is
at its heart
 a comedy

and
 joy
 is
 well
 david o. russell at work
weaving fantasy with semi reality

now its sunday afternoon
its really cold out
tho
 not as cold
as it will be
over
 the next few days

that's okay
it is
winter
after all

3 dog not night

the last weekend of 2015
was
dreary
it never rained
but
it felt like rain

i had an errand that took me
down columbus avenue

that woman
with
 the 3 small dogs
walked
in front

ahead
 of
 me
 for
 several blocks

suddenly
 she
 stopped
turned
listened
as if
she heard
someone call her

i used that minute to get a shot of them
