amsterdam dog

this guy
is
 part of
 the
 night watch
 sculptures
in
 amsterdam's
 rembrandtplein
 rembrandt square
(click here to read about it)
an area
 we passed through
 numerous times

charm school for cats

annie
 is adjusting to living here
she seems to want to play
be part of the boys club

her idea
 of
 engaging
 jack
who she feels most comfortable around
 is
to run at him full speed
 stop short
turn
 run away

 she's
 the
 cat version
 of
 seinfeld's kramer

 seriously

 the hissing has stopped
 the growling
 is
now mostly
 her
 when harry
who is the world's biggest mush
 comes
 too close

 yesterday
(really this morning as i write this)
 jack
did a sort of pele move
with
 this little ball
sending it down the hall
aiming it at annie
 who was
 sitting
 watching

 she
sort of
 tapped it
with her paw
 it barely moved

 jack
 turned
 walked away
 decided
 the window was more welcoming

 then she disappeared
 she's so small
she can get herself
 into
 spaces
 places
the boys can't

  she often hides
 under
 the armchair
 it has a skirt

what she doesn't 'get'
is
when either of the boys hides under there
 a game is afoot

 whoever isn't under the skirt
 tries to get the other
 to come out
 by
sticking a paw or nose out
 or
under the skirt

 i dont know
 what material
the chair has covering it
but
it has stood up to these antics
for a few years
 with little to show
how its mistreated
(lauren if you're reading this thank you again for the chair/ottoman its much loved much used)

anyway
 all this
 got me thinking

 dogs
 go to obedience school
 they learn to socialize

 why isn't there something
 for
 cats

 i know
 you are laughing
 so
 hard
 right now
 obedience for cats
 hardee har har

okay
 not obedience school
 maybe
 charm school

 we're convinced
 annie
never spent time in a shelter
she must have been an only cat
in her previous life

 clearly not a loving life
you may recall
she was tossed from a moving car
in a carrier
likely
 that
was
 the only reason
 she survived
 how lucky
she was to be found by our vet
 how lucky
she is to be a part of our lives

i know
 we feel lucky
 most of the time
not so much
 the times
she refuses to use
 the scratching post or pad
in place
 of
the records on the shelf
 the back of the armchair
the duvet cover on our bed

its hard to stay angry with a face like that

phew, turkey crisis averted!

i told you
i ordered
 our thanksgiving dinner
from zabars
 as i did last year

 as i did last year
 i likely ordered
 too much food
it will get eaten
 there'll be leftovers for days
 after all
its just me toonman and my sister aka sil

what did i order
turkey breast
 pot roast aka brisket
 rosemary roasted potatoes
 sweet mashed yams
 string beans almondine
 creamed spinach
traditional cornbread stuffing
turkey gravy

 of course
that
 wasn't

 what was delivered
 what was delivered
 was
a
 15 pound smoked whole turkey
 smoked
 whole turkey
 15 pounds
 whoa

 i called zabars
they were so busy
 the nice woman
 on the phone
 told me
she couldn't get a manager to pick up the phone

you're just down the street
 could you bring it in
 see the manager
have him swap it out for you

 could i
 i could
 i did

 they are the nicest people
 no one told me
 it was my mistake

 it sort of was
apparently
the smoked whole turkey
 is
 the line
 above
the turkey breast
 on the order form
 and
my '1' filled the both slots
they went with the whole turkey
 smoked

 yikes

i swapped it for a 6-7 lbs of turkey breast
got the difference refunded in cash

is cash okay
 he asked

sure
 i said
crisis averted

we'll still have leftovers for days
 but
 who cares

there will be wine

oh yeah
cranberry compote and kale salad from bird bath bakery
 sil's bringing the pies

happy thanksgiving!!!!!!!

what a difference a week makes ...

last weekend
 wasn't
 the most exciting
 but
 it was
busy

 this weekend
 was
 total slothville

aside from
 beautification
 some errands
 a lot of reading

 there
 wasn't
 isn't
 very much to write about

lets see
 what i can expand upon

i am at the stage of needing a hair cut
my hair hasn't been this long
 in well
 i can't remember
  when

 its longer
 now
 than
it was
 before
the short cut
that looked good
til
 it grew out

 so
i am hesitant to go back to that stylist
 yet
 i know he's really good

i love the woman who blow dries my hair
i like the cut she gave a friend
 but
my hair and the friend's hair
are
not
at all alike

 so
 i am not sure
i want to take that chance

 such a dilemma

 erranding
 was
 uneventful
i didnt need to buy much
 for the coming week
as its a short week
 work-wise
 plus
i ordered a ton of food from zabars
(i really dislike auto correct it insists i mean zebras)
 for
 thanksgiving

 yes

 i dont cook
 even
for
 thanksgiving

i order pre-cooked food
 turkey and the fixings
 which
 get
 hotted or heated
 depending
 on

 how you think of it
 its like
 dressing vs stuffing
hotted vs heated
whatever or whichever

i am reading an excellent book
book one of a trilogy
by
 lev grossman
 the magicians

i would tell you more about it
except
i am only 103 pages into the first book

  i did look
 online
for a blurb the share
what i found was a sort of recap
 of
 the trilogy

 me
the one
who loves spoilers
who always said
knowing what happens isn't a spoiler cause you still have to see how it happens
 is
very
 sorry
she went looking
 of course
i didnt stop reading quickly enough

i could blame you
 but
 i won't

anyway

here's a photo of my street
taken
 last weekend

i tried
 to
 stand
 in the same spot
 to
 capture
 the same tree

didnt work out so well

  but
 you get the idea

  winter is coming!

yorkie

i am not sure
 why
i had a lot of trouble trying to
 edit
balance the color
fix the exposure
of
 this photo
in one editing program
 all i could see
after importing it
was
 a black rectangle
in another
nothing
 i tried
worked
cue the twilight zone theme

in the end
 i gave up
 didnt even sign it
this little darling
 was the house pup
 at a small restaurant/pub
the name of which i cannot recall
 we visited
in
amsterdam

EDITED because my friend/travel partner extraordinaire Mary sent me this link to Da Spiegel  .. click here to see more of this wonderful little restaurant in Amsterdam

say ahhhhhhhh

bottom line
my tonsils
 have absorbed
 as they are supposed to
 debris from food
 from bacteria
 but
 they seem
 to
 have been overloaded
 they're so small
 so small
 i never had them removed
still dont need to
but
 i do need to gargle
 with
salt water/peroxide mix
 to
get the little white blisters
 to
go away
 keep from recurring

 they
have been
are
 the source
of
 my sore throat
 of
 my often squeaky sounding voice

now i have my very own ent doc
who
 i like a lot
 as
he not only reviewed my history
before meeting me
 he listened
 even laughed
 at a funny i made

 he'd told me
an antibiotic
he was going to give me
 a 'script for
should i need it
was
a pain
 in
the butt
to take
because
you have to take it 4 times a day

 i said
 no problem
 if it helps
 honestly
unless its a proctologist
you're seeing
 its not
 a pain in the butt

 ha ha ha

numbers

5:15 wake up

6:45 leave for the office

8 blocks to 72nd street

57 steps from the platform to the street at park place

3.5 blocks from park place to the office

43 floors up

7,517 steps a day on average

water towers everywhere

took the big camera to work
 but
i only schlepped the kit lens

 i was
concentrating
 waiting
 for
 the staten island ferry
 to
get
right
 there
 before
 snapping the shot

 i didnt notice
 all
 the water towers
 til
i was straightening the photo in pic monkey

i tend to lean to the right
all my photos need to be scooched to the left

i am not sure this one is straight
but
 i did try

weekend recappage

its monday
 again

i am writing this on
sunday

you're reading it
 on
monday
 or
maybe
 tuesday
 or
even
wednesday

as is the way
 of
the internets
 i post
 its there
 you show up
 whenever

 works for me

 lets see

 it was
 all in all
 a good weekend

weather was much colder
 than its been
up til now

 i think
 we were spoiled
by the way the warmth lingered

 well
 its gone now

 tho
monday comes with rain
 temps in the 50s
 to lull us
 into
a false sense
 of
 things
 because
 its gonna get cold
 then colder still

i hope this winter
is not like last

that was just horrible

 anyway

it was a cold
 but
nice weekend

 saturday
there was some major lifting
 happening
 on broadway
 when
 i was waiting
 for
the crosstown bus

overcast on sunday
even these bright ginkgo leaves couldn't alleviate the gray skies

 i got a lot done
i even left work at 3ish on friday
always a treat to get home early on friday

 the cats decided
i needed to wake at 4 on saturday morning

 i dont know how toonman
 doesn't
 hear them or feel them
 as
they race in out of the bedroom
leaping on off the bed
 or
as jack is wont to do
running behind our heads across the back of the bed

 they are truly animals
our apartment is like a zoo
 gah

i had a wonderful much needed massage on saturday
 my
i will not name him masseuse
told me he was definitely earning his money
kneading my aching back

i almost nodded off during my facial
if you've ever had a facial
 you know
thats sort of insane
considering
 how it can hurt
to have your pores cleaned

 shannon who does my facials
 is not gentle
she's thorough

i love how my skin looks
we did a deep peel this month
i was told my face might be pink
it wasnt
i guess i have tough skin
 i am a tough woman
 yeah right

 on my way home
 i spotted this skirt
 i love it
i love the way it flows
 its light
 its a midi length
 its so pretty
i am planning on wearing it with boots and a black sweater

we watched
a lot of catch up tv on saturday evening
i love love love aaron sorkin
 i am so sad
 this season
 is the last of newsroom
 the 'boston' episode
 was
 so
 well written acted
so
 spot on

sunday
a much needed manicure
 this move
the subsequent
 unpacking moving things around
has done damage to my nails and my fingers

 i was a mess
thankfully
 susan at polished
 made it all better

i met my sister for brunch
 at
 maison kayser
of course
we were talking
 of course
 i forgot to take photos
 of
the amazing eggs we had
 by the time
 i realized
 i hadn't snapped a photo
they were devoured
 all gone
 delish

 its a tiny dining area
 and
 noisy
 but
the food is so good
i brought home leftover baguette for toonman
after i stopped at zabars
ordered our thanksgiving fixings
 which come all cooked
 ready
to hot up and serve
 which
 as you may recall
freaks me out
because
math is required
get it all hot at the same time
toonman will be my anchor
he will remind me it will all be okay

thats about it

how was your weekend?

two cute pups

back in early october
 i was on the eastside
 for my yearly mammogram

 i was early
 so
i stopped at starbucks for a coffee

outside
 these two pups
 were
 waiting
 for
 their
 respective people

tgif

really
 truly
 i am
 so
 glad
 the week is ending

it was another exhausting one

i am now getting a lot of exercise
 walking a shorter distance
 from
 the subway to the office
but
the park place station has a lot of stairs

 oy

that
 is
 the second
 of
four flights
 of
 stairs
from
the platform to the street

 i havent
 counted
 them

yet

alls well that ends well

we've been in one world trade center for just a little over a week now
the windows had been washed inside
 but
the outside was not so clean

 yesterday
 two very brave men
 rode a scaffold
down from the 107th floor to our windows on 43
to wash them

 on the way back up
 the scaffold cable broke
 and
those two men
hooked by several harnesses and safety cables to the scaffold
 dangled
outside the building at the 68th floor
for almost an hour and a half
before
fire fighters cut the glass of the windows to pull them into safety

i took these photos
 while they were working
to share on my instagram and facebook feeds
 because
 all my previous photos
were
shot through dirty windows
 and
i wanted everyone to see the windows being cleaned

little did i know

practically wordless water towers

you know
 that
ugly skyscraper
on
 the eastside
 which
 holds the title
of
 tallest residential building
 in
 the
 wherever?

 thats it

there

behind
 those
 two
water towers
 water tanks

 yup

 ugleeeeeee

weekend blather

my wonderful husband
got up to feed the cats on saturday morning
so i could sleep in

 when i thanked him
 he said
 hey i read your blog

 it felt so good
 to sleep past 4 ayem
thats the time the cats begin their assault
to get me up to feed them
 mind you
they dont get fed til 5:30

 i guess
 they think
 they need
 to
emulate a snooze alarm

 did you know
i dont use an alarm clock

never have

 no need

i always wake
 around 4-4:30
 look at the clock
turn over
 go back to sleep
 knowing
 i can sleep
for
another
 however
 long
til the time
i need to be up

i think i may have 'over slept' 2-3 times
 in
my whole life

 its a gift

ha

speaking of assault
 we watched
 edge of tomorrow
on
 saturday evening
it was quite a lot of fun

if you've ever played a game
 say
 like
 angry birds
 where
you can do it over and over
 til you get it right
 you'll enjoy this

its sort of groundhog day set in an alien invasion/war

 tom cruise
 was good
 i say this
 because
i am not a tom cruise fan
but
 he was good
 in this
 so was emily blunt

 i recommend this movie
i am sure a lot of you
 won't
 find it to your taste
but
those
who do will

when i did get up saturday morning
 i lazed around drinking coffee
til
it was time for my hair appointment
my hair is longer now
than its been in many a year

 i was growing out
 a
 not so wonderful cut

now
i am just letting it grow
 for the fun of it

eventually
 it will need to be
 shaped
 styled

maybe its already reached that point
 but
i am not ready
to
decide on
who
 i will let do it

i did a lot of errands on saturday
 it was
 chilly but sunny
a good day to be out

sunday
 was
 also
 lovely
i went to polished for my weekly mani/pedi
 my poor fingers
 are
so cut up
my nails
 were
 broken
 chipped

 the move
 took its toll
 on
 my hands
on
my back
 in addition
to
 sapping my energy

 not to mention
 but
 i will
 that
my damn throat is still annoying me

i am awaiting
 'permission'
from my healthcare provider
 to see an ent
 so
we can figure out
what the heck
 this
throat thing
that
 is
not
a virus
 is

 grrrrr

 i have decided
 if
i dont get the 'permission' slip
 in
 monday's mail
 i am making the appointment
 anyway

what else
 i dont know
 what else

 oh yeah

 the cats

annie has tried to make friends with jack
 she avoids harry
i think his hisses were more scary
 and
 he's bigger
 tho he is a mush
he's not made friends with her

i think
he's jealous of my time with her

 jack
 is
 far more
toonman's boy than mine

 annie is funny
 she has limited social skills
she enters the living room
 sort of
 like
 kramer from seinfeld

 jack and she played chase
 once
 he
not the brightest bulb
'got'
that
she wanted to play

 she likes
 the front window
 climbing up
 on the mantle
 or
on the sink

 both
 get her told
 no
very emphatically
 over
 and
 over

 but
 i think
 we're making progress

splashing dog

i spotted
this dog
 in
 vondel park
our first day
in
amstersdam

he was racing
into
 the lake
after a stick

he'd come out
 shake himself off
and
 do it all over again
like this

tgif

really
 truly
 thank goddess its friday

 what a week

 i am finally not exhausted
 that
 is
 saying a lot

i do plan on sleeping in saturday morning
i am going to close the door to the cats
 i dont care
 how much
 they
wail or scratch at the door

i am sleeping as late as i possibly can

 so there

 i discovered
 a shorter way home

 going
to the office
in
 the morning
 i dont mind
 the
walk
from
 chambers at west broadway
 its 3 or 4 blocks
 its direct
a straight line
i like that

 going home
 in
 the evening
 that walk
 seems a lot longer

thursday
 it rained all day
 fortunately
 both
my
 to and from
did not happen
 during
 down pours

the entrance to the subway at chambers
is
on both sides of the street
 so
as
i walk
if the light is red uptown
i cross to the opposite side of the street

 are you following
my disjointed train of thought here
 there is a point

 thursday evening
as
i walked
the light changed
so
 i crossed west broadway
 kept walking north
 as
 i got to park place
 i thought
 lets see
 where
 the subway station is

 so
 i walked up the street
there at the next corner
was
 the subway entrance
 down
 the stairs
 i went

 followed the signs
 to
 the 2 and 3 trains
 its a bit confusing
 but
 i found my way

i ended up
 on the platform
where
the front
 the first car
of
the uptown train
would
stop

 and

 its a stop
 below
 chambers
 which means
 there's a better chance
of
 getting a seat

 yeah me
 i got a seat

what do you call the driver of the train?
 its not the conductor
the engineer?
 is it the engineer?
 anyway
whatever
 he or she is called
they had a heavy foot

we sped uptown
 really
it was the fastest
 its been all week
i left the office at 4:30ish
got out of the subway at 72nd street
 at just before 5

yeah me

ok
the windows are in need of a washing
 the rain did not help
 thats
 the south reflecting pool
 and
 the triangle-ish building
 is
the 9/11 memorial museum

 those trees are gorgeous

i hope that i can get a better photo
with
 less reflection
 soon
 it was pretty awesome
when the fog rolled in thursday afternoon
it was a total white out
i didnt even attempt a photo
because
all you could see was a reflection
 of
 the inside of my office
which
you've already seen

about the move

so my office move happened over the weekend
 we packed up
 the movers took everything downtown
 beginning
 thursday evening

we had friday off

monday morning
i felt like a kid starting at a new school
 really

 i woke at around 3
 not
 because
 i couldn't sleep

 because
 the cats decided
 to
 alternately
 caterwaul
 race in/out of the bedroom
 hiss at one another
generally being
 annoying

toonman slept through it all

 not me

i got up around 5
 fed the buggers
showered
 dressed
 left the house
 around
 6:45
which is
actually
 only
 5 minutes earlier than usual

 i walked to 72nd
 the express was pulling in
 hopped on

 4 stops later
 approx 10 min

 i got off at chambers
walked down
 west broadway
stopped for coffee

 because
 i am no dummy
i knew the coffee machines
 were
not
unpacked
 installed

 i was right

it took most of the day to unpack
the important stuff
deal with
 the
i need this
 i dont like that

its all part of my job
 to
 solve
resolve

i didnt leave til almost 5
 the subway at chambers
 was so crowded
i stood like a sardine without the oil
 all the way uptown

 i got home
 opened a bottle of wine
 sat down
 and
sipped
 and
 yawned
 til about 9
 then
 went to sleep

 i was exhausted

except for the bad ride home
 tuesday and wednesday were identical

there's a lot to sort out
 to get settled in

there is still all the art photos painting to be hung
 the pantry needs organizing
the copy room has nowhere to put the 15 crates of stuff
that need to be unpacked

the architects/designers created a great space
 but
in terms of

work space
 needs
its lacking

several closets have no bar for the hangers
really
 i am not joking

there is a conference room
 with
 no
 doors

who is going to meet in a conference room
 with
 no doors

there is an awful lot of wasted space

but
 i can brag
 about
getting my desk turned around
 so its actually
 a desk
vs
a long counter with a short 'L'
under the window

this was taken a week before we moved in

the view is amazing
even with dirty windows

actually every view is amazing

we have the entire 43 floor
you really can see for miles and miles

its a gorgeous building
i promise
more photos
 from
inside and out
but
i need to get to sleep
i am still exhausted

none of these are signed
i am just too tired
