so about that trip

its still crazy at the office
we're down to the last day in times square
 i come home so tired
 i dont feel like writing
 but
 its wednesday evening
as i write this
 toonman plays cards on wednesday
 the cats are all napping
harry and annie on opposite ends of the bed
jack in the recycle basket
its quiet and i feel like sharing
i went through my amsterdam photos
 pulled out a bunch
 which
i will use to prompt my memory

ok
 here we go

my friend and the best travel companion in the world
mary
flew in from cincinnati
we left jfk at around 8 pm on tuesday evening
 we fly standby
if there's a seat in biz or first
we get upgraded

 score!
 we both got sleeper seats
 and
 slept across the atlantic
 arriving in amsterdam
wednesday morning around 10 am

we took the train from the airport to amsterdam central

from there
we hopped a tram
 if you go to amsterdam
you should buy the 72 hour unlimited tram pass for 17.50 euros
 you can hop
 on and off
 as many times
a day/night
as you want

 which is a good thing
if you tend to get lost

 after all its an adventure

we rented an apartment in a really nice area
 just steps away

 from vondelpark and museumplein

i think there must be no heart disease because everyone bikes

let me point out that every sidewalk is divided in half
the side nearest the street is for bikes
pedestrians must look out for bikers who take their right of way very seriously

the first day we not only wandered vondelpark
we went looking for salamander park
its adjacent to
rembrandtplein
where
a stature of rembrandt looks out over life size figures from night watch

we walked over 12 miles the first day
through intermittent sun and rain
we also got lost ending up taking the tram back to central and starting over

seriously

on thursday
my friend robin flew in from wales
to spend the rest of the week with us

we headed off to lunch
at
de kas
an amazing incredible dining experience
food looking as good as it tasted
all grown right there in their own greenhouse

after lunch
we decided to go to the famous flea market
  it wasn't all we expected
but
we all got some fun photos

then we decided to go to the rijks museum
we got there too late to go inside so we wandered the outside
the
iamsterdam sculpture
is much loved much climbed upon

we'd been told to have dinner
 at
 kantkil & de tijger

 alas it was booked solid
we wandered a bit
ending up in a very nice italian restaurant
the name of which escapes me just now

we did get to dine at kantjil on friday night
it was amazingly good

we took a long walk after dinner
since the rain stopped
i think it rained 90% of the time

friday
 was the worst day
 it rained non stop

we decided to go to the museum
 apparently
so did the rest of the city

what do to on a rainy day in amsterdam?
you take a canal boat tour
of course

getting to see the city from a unique perspective

on saturday
robin went to meet an old friend

mary and i went to the cat museum

after we did some more wandering
i love how the canal houses are so crooked
for once the lopsided photo isn't my fault

we had an really great time
 rain is no deterrent
when you are traveling
you just make sure to pack your
 slicker
umbrella
 good walking shoes

my fitbit let me know
we walked over 12 miles the first day
 and
at least 6 or 7 each of the other days
we ate terrific food
 drank good beer
 shopped
talked
 took photos
 and
fell in love with the city

there are more photos over at 'my eyes'

no still no amsterdam

i planned
 on
 a long recap
 of
 my trip to Amsterdam

 but
 i am exhausted
i have been fighting a virus
which seems to thrive on the stress

tuesday
i went to see the new offices
 its a magnificent building
 our offices are beautiful
 the views are breathtakingly gorgeous

it was the high point of the day

 when i got back
i was up to my ears
 in
 packing
 supervising the movers
 and
fielding my boss's calls from san francisco
he changed his return flight 4 times

 so
 all that said
here are a few photos i took this morning

such a beauty
oh
 and
 the world trade center
too

 the view
 from
 my office window
which
 really
 could use
 a good washing

yup
its still a construction site
so the hard hat and safety vest
were required

i'm baaack!

but
jet-lag
a sore throat (under control)
 and
 the return to chaos
 surrounding
 the upcoming move
kept me
from
giving you
recappage
 of
my most excellent visit to amsterdam

 as a tease
here's one of my favorite photos

ready set go

i am going

see ya later

i will be back sunday october 26
 with
a lot of wonderful photos and stories to share

til then

so long, farewell, au revoir, auf wiedersehen, goodbye

erranding

i made that up
its an extension of the word
 errand
it means to do errands

i dont know
 if
its
 a verb or a noun

i was not very good at that part of english
 actually
i wasn't good at a lot of english
 yet
it was one of my majors
 history
 being the other

 anyway
 saturday was errand day
 hither and yon
 i went
 but
 in
 an organized way

 i dont go
 uptown
 downtown
 across town
 randomly

usually
 i start
 at
the furthest point
 working my way back

 yesterday
i did it sort of differently

i needed all my eye glasses to be adjusted
 so
i went to 83 street first
 got all three pair adjusted
 realigned

 hedda
runs the eye man
  she has
 the most sarcastic mouth

 told me
 it wasn't the frames
 it was my head

 she might be right

 since i was on 83
i went next door to the town shop
i had a credit
that
 got me
two new bras
 a pair of plaid tights
that will be fun with my grey sweater dress and boots
and
the best lingerie wash in the world

  i walked down to 72nd
 across to columbus
 to
ricky's
 such a fun store
 it has everything
 from
halloween costumes to cosmetics to well

i exchanged a spritzer bottle
for
 two small airline size bottles

 on the way to 72nd
 i stopped
 into
the shoe repair shop for new shoe laces
into
 the cvs for deodorant
 on the way back
 i debated
 going to trader joe's
 i did
 but
ended up not buying anything

 why?
 because
everything i wanted was pumpkin related or fattening
i am going away in 2.5 days
 reason won

 i ended up walking home
 stopping into westside
for some stacy's naked pita chips
to have with an apple for lunch

 i accomplished
 almost
 everything
 on my to do list

i still need to go to the bank
for euros
i still need to go to zabar's
for toonman's
turkey meatballs

 but
that can happen today
 or
even
 monday

 tuesday morning
 i get my hair done
 tuesday afternoon
 i leave for the airport
 tuesday evening
 i meet mary at jfk
 and
 we fly to amsterdam

this was how the skies
 looked
 saturday
 as
 i began erranding

 pretty isn't it

oats

oats
named by his two new little boy owners
 is
 the newest member
 of
 my friend/sometime co-worker Peter's family

he's a labradoodle
and
i think
 he's adoradooble too

more nothing

today
 is
my last day at the office
 for
a whole week

 when i return
 i will finish packing

 the move downtown
 happens
on
 the 31st

not sure
 if
its a trick or a treat

 i learned
 today
that my job will be changing with the move
more responsibility
which
 i guess
 is a good thing
the raise i got to go with it
 sure is nice

 anyway
 next week
i will be in a foreign city
likely
 looking
 much like
these
 people

this, that and some of the other

its thursday
 hooray for friday eve

 getting closer to the move
 packing a few things
every day
so when i get back from amsterdam

 what
 you didnt know
 i was going to amsterdam

 i am

 next week
my wonderful travel friend mary and i
are off on another adventure

 i dont know
 if you know
 but
i have long wanted to visit amsterdam

this trip has been in the planning stages
 for many months

 initially
we wanted to go the second week in november
but
my boss
 was
sure
the move downtown
 wouldn't happen
 as scheduled
 he asked me
to go
 before
the
move date

 of course
the move is happening on schedule

in fact
 next tuesday
 when i am in amsterdam
move coordinators
 hello
 that would be
me
along with 5 other members of each move group
 are being given
 a tour
 of
the new offices

did
 i
not know
 in my heart of hearts
 this would happen

 i did

 gah

i also knew that flu shots
were sure to be given
 when i was away

 on that score
 i was wrong

 they were given
tuesday

 at 3:45 i discovered
they were being given from 11 until 4

quick as a bunny
i called someone up in the hr department
 begging
to get in under the wire
 in fact
the flu shot person was packing up to leave

could i come up right now
yes i could
i zipped upstairs
she gave me the shot
phew

i have also been promised a tour
of the new offices
the week before the move
when i am back in the office

 but
the best news
is
 no more hissing is happening

 i guess
 harry is all hissed out

now annie can come hang with us
 in the living room

i even got her her own scratching pad

 as
you can see
harry
has usurped it

thanks in advance!

my sister sent me this:

They can be separated - in fact, would probably be happier that way. And they have lived with a dog so that opens up more possibilities!

weekend recap page

annie's been with us a week
 as of this past friday

it was a week filled with chaos
 her adjustment to us
has been
one step forward two steps back

 the good news
 is
 that
 on sunday
she ventured into the living room
 without
 a lot of drama

leading up to that point
 however
 drama reigned

harry's so laid back
nothing bothers him

 jack
 on the other hand
 has been feeling the need
 to let everyone know
he's the top cat
 its his house
 he is the chief hisser
his hissing and nastiness toward harry
 resulted
 in
 several
 very loud scary fights

it got so that harry was hissing at jack for no reason
 no apparent reason
but
 i think
he was hissing
 'cause
 he remembered being bullied
 and
 needed
 to let jack know
he had not forgotten
the hissing
the growling
 the chasing
 the attacks

 neither
toonman nor i
got a lot sleep this past week

sunday morning
i did get to sleep in
it was a sleep filled with weird dreams
i even woke myself
 sunday morning
 by
crying out

i would tell you about the dream
 but
 it was so weird
i am trying to forget it

no there are no photos to share of the cats
well except for this one

 harry's curled up
against the radiator cover
dreaming
 i am sure
 of days
 without
 hissing growling and fighting

hey!!!!!

i took this in paris
a year ago may
 that
 little chihuahua
 was
 waiting with her person
 outside
a boulangerie
 aka
 bakery
 the sort of bakery
 the french excel at

lots going on here
 with
 our new addition annie
and
our boyz
 but
i will save
 that
 for another day

promise!

the best haircut in the city

something
 you dont see a lot
 an old style barber shop
 this one
is
 on west 23rd street

i passed it on the way to dinner last night

it claims to give
'the best haircut in the city'

i wonder

thanks to Hilary

today there are words

not many
because
 the move prep
 at the office
 and
the lingering effect
of
the more than a cold but quite flu
has
drained
my energy
 for
 perky

an unphoto filled weekend

so
 i have been sick
 miserable
 congested
 since wednesday
 but
 i am improving
going back to work
monday
 which
i guess is
today
as you read
 but
 tomorrow
 as i write

its been an eventful few days
tho i havent been out much
 the weather being mostly awful
 there are no new photos

  i think
 i told you
 we were adopting another cat
 her name is annie

we picked her up from the vet on friday
 she's been in the bottom
 of
 toonman's closet
 for most of the weekend
 ever
since
jack
 was
 not
welcoming

in fact
 he was downright
 nasty

 she was inspecting the bedroom
when he walked in to see what was happening

 she hissed

i dont know
 if you know
hissing
usually
 means
i am scared please back off

 instead of being a gentleman
backing off
 he not only hissed back
 he growled
 she growled
 there was a lot noise
scary noise

she burrowed her way deep into the bottom of my closet
it being the closest place to hide

 harry
 the whole time
 sat
on the cedar chest at the foot of the bed
 watching

 they were both ushered out
the bedroom door
closed

over the next two days
she moved into toonman's closet
made herself at home
 on top of something
coming out
only
 to
 eat pee/poop
(we put food and water bowls and a small litter box in the bedroom keeping the door closed to the boys)
 and
to prowl around the bedroom at night

she is letting me pet her
sometimes
tho
once she scratched me
 another time
she hit me without using her claws

i called that an improvement

she's scratched toonman twice

 he isn't taking it personally
 but
he has decided
 to wait
 til she's out and about
 before making friends

anyway
 thats whats been happening

so here's another pretty photo
i took during my visit to the botanical gardens
last weekend

big guy

this handsome guy
 was
 outside
 the new 'french' bakery
on
broadway at 75 street
 it will not do well
once
eric kayser
 is open
but
 til
 then
they serve decent coffee and what looks like a nice macaron

friday friday

i am home sick
 whatever
 this is
 its no fun

it might be easier
 to list the things
that
 dont ache
 or
 aren't
 stuffed/congested

 lets not dwell
 on
my being less than healthy

 lets
 look at a pretty picture
 shall we

lots of words

this
 is
how it looks
 in
 the mornings
now
 as
i walk to the subway
look
there
above the broadway sign
its
a
water tower

lots happening here

i had a lovely lunch
 with
Brit blogger
akelamalu
(her hawaiian name)
who blogs at
everything and nothing

Pearl
and
her charming husband Peter
treated me to lunch at
the brooklyn diner
in
times square
their last day in nyc

its always a pleasure to meet a blogger you have known for years
i just wish they'd more time here

our wonderful vet andy kaplan of city vet
emailed
 last weekend
 about a small cat
 he found on the street
 minutes
 after
she'd been thrown from a car
he's checked her out
she's healthy and very sweet
we're naming her
annie

i suspect
she will wrapping
 her big brothers
 jack and harry
around her paw in no time
she joins us on friday

three ginger cats
hey
the more the merrier!

city daily photo theme day - october - movement

it seems
 as if
just
yesterday
it was
september

 its the first
 of
october

time
for
 the
monthly CDP theme
this month its
movement

 this past weekend
i spent a day in the bronx
 in
the new york botanical gardens

 at
 the enid haupt pavilion
 there
are
lotus
 water lily
 koi ponds

what better way
 to
 show
 movement
 than
 to show you
the koi in action

as always
 you can see
 how
 others around the world
illustrate
the theme
by
