beatrix

beatrix
 is
a rescue
 even though
she's
 had
 a forever home
 for 2 years
she's still
very leery
of
strangers

 she flinches
if you try to pet her

i sat down on the floor
 speaking
to her
very gently
asking
 how her day was
did she go to the park

 right after i took this

 she
 started
talking to me
making
 all kinds of sounds

 her people were astonished
 she's never talked to us

 i thought
have you ever talked to her

 no matter
she is well loved
treated gently
 to
make up
 for
whatever
caused her
to be
 so mistrustful

its gonna be a long weekend

its
 my
last fridaycation

got a bit of a head start
 left
 the office at 4
thursday

add to that
 a
mini meet up
 at
lunch time
with
two instagram friends

 we took a walk
we took some photos
 we went back to work

as for the rest
of
the weekend

i am looking forward
to
enjoying myself
beautifying
erranding
walks in the park

what plans do you have?

there's a point here somewhere

i thought
i had
 nothing
 to share
 to blather
 about
 but
 i do

 i long admired
 san merideth
an artist
who
used to blog

 i longed
 for
 one of her abstracts

 two years ago
 i was in santa fe
she of course was not in town
 where she lives
where she and her husband
 own
 convergence gallery

san not being there
did not stop me
 buying one of her sunsets
as well as
"black and white"
 by
 brad stroman

i sent her a photo of the bedroom

oh my good golly
look at all those dust collectors

yesterday
 she emailed
 asking
 for
a photo
of the stroman piece in situ

piece of cake
 i thought

 yes honey
 i know
if i asked you'd
have put up lights for me
but
 i didnt

 my 35mm
 even
with flash
 wasn't doing it

this part
of
 the living room
is
mine

can you tell

 the brad stroman's
 "black and white"
 is
 the middle piece

oh yeah
 i ended up
 shooting it with the iPhone
its not as fussy about light

water tower (almost) wordlessly

okay
 so maybe
 not wordlessly

 see the two tanks?
 and
 at no extra charge
a lot of escher-ishy fire escapes

 this building
 is
uptown
around 100 street off riverside drive

weekend recappage

came home thursday evening
 looking forward
 to
a relaxing but not slothful weekend

friday
 i met a friend
 we went to riverside park

 i wanted to walk down
to
the wine bottle sculpture

 i had heard about
 in
 an area
called clinton
along the hudson river portion
of
the park
that edges the river
 of the same name
on
 the westside of manhattan

 however
 first
we had to have lunch

we opted
 for
 pier 1 cafe

 usually
 jam packed
 with
 new yorkers visiting the park
 on weekends
 it was practically deserted
 at
12ish on friday

i had a burger
my friend opted for chicken fingers

 in no rush
 we sat
we ate
we chatted
then
we walked
the skies were threatening
but never let loose

we stopped at all the art
i have shown you in past posts

along the way
 she got
 a shot

i was focusing on some dying but interesting flowers

saturday
i had wanted to join a walk
across
 the george washington bridge
 a visit
 to the little red lighthouse

my heavy lens was necessary
my backs been a bit wonky
i decided a long walk schlepping a heavy lens was not in the cards

instead
toonman and i
took
a short walk uptown in the park
we missed an event
"unleashed"
not sure
what it was about
 but
 the clean up was interesting

the skies
 were
 pretty amazing
 on
our way back

sunday
was spent beautifying

one evening i forget which we watched divergence
it was a decent book but the movie was meh

not as active a weekend as i had hoped
what did you do?

letting it go

i just wrote
 a
long rant

 sat back
 looked at it
 hit
delete

 ..

its fridaycation

i am going to let it go

you say tomato ...

did i mention
one of the lawyers i work with
 brought me
 some heirloom tomatoes

we'd had a conversation
 not long ago
 about
 pretty
fruit and flowers

 bred to look good
they are beautiful
 they lack
 however
 any
taste or aroma

my mom told me
the worse the tomatoes in the market look
 the better they taste

in florida
 she told me
 they ship out
only
the best looking produce
they keep the ugly stuff
 for in-state consumption

when he gave me the tomatoes
he said
 these are tomatoes
your mom
 would
 have
loved

he's right

water tower sunset

one evening
 during
 the
super moon
 i went
 up to the roof
because
'they'
said
as soon as the sun set
 you'd be able
 to
see
 the moon rise
 in
 the
eastern sky

yeah
well
 no

 nevertheless
 i took
 a few photos
 of
the rooftops
water towers
 and
 clouds

 that fence
 is
 to keep people
 like me
from falling
off
the roof

i had such good intentions

i had
 such
 good intentions

 i was going
 to get out
with
the big camera
 on
 friday

 i did get out
 i did walk
 but
 i didnt take the camera

 i 'only' walked
 to
 columbus circle
 to the time-warner mall/shops
with
a stop on the way
at
 apple
 to get toonman
 a stand-alone dvd drive
 because
 the uber expensive apple iMac
no longer
 comes
 with
 a dvd drive

 we got apple
 on
 the phone
 to
help him
 transfer files applications etc
from
his old iMac to the new
he calmed down
but
 there was a moment
when
 he was all
send it back we can buy an old one

yeah
 no

the weekly visit
 to
 zabars
to
dry cleaners
was
 all i got done

 saturday
 was
 a
total me day
i had my monthly massage and facial
 got my hair washed/blown dry
 picked up something to nosh
i was starving
 after
all that pampering

i was hoping to get toonman to take a walk
but
he was too involved
burning dvds
 making back ups
being
one with his iMac

speaking
 of
 being one
with the iMac

harry
 felt the need
to get in on the action
 on
 toonman's very crowded desk

see him sleeping between the two machines?

sunday
more 'me' indulgence
mani/pedi
followed by
brunch across town
in a very french bistro
with
a good friend and her sometimes boyfriend
a girl needs weekends like these
but
i still wish
toonman and i
had
gone for a walk

what a face

we were on our way out of the park
 after a quick walk
 down
 to
the river and back

 i saw this pup
 and
 another
 in
the grass
their person
 was
 sitting on a bench

 often
 i just crouch and snap

 usually
there aren't people with the pups
 when
 there are
 sometimes
i merely make eye contact before snapping away
 but
this guy
 well
i could see
 i would need to ask

i did

i pointed to the camera i was holding
 nodding toward the dogs

 may i?

  he looked
 at them
 at me
as long as its not for commercial purposes or for a dog porn site

somewhat surprised
i said
 no
 its for my blog

 after i took the pix
 toonman and i
continued
 to walk home
exchanging looks and shrugs
 he said
did you get a shot of the little guy he was terrific

 yup
 i did
 and
yup
 he is

i ❤️ ...

yesterday morning
 this scene
 stopped
 me

 i was juggling
 an umbrella
 an over stuffed tote bag
my id

 it stopped me

 took out my iPhone

crouched down
balancing
 carefully
 so
i didnt tip over
 onto
 the wet plaza

 i didnt

i hated the renovation of times square
 i really
 hated
 the construction
the inconvenience of sidewalk narrowing
 hated the arrival of h&m

hate
the disney characters posing in their gross smelling costumes
with
tourists

 tourists
 seem to have multiplied
now every day is like wednesday

 how so

you ask

 well
 wednesday is matinee day
 broadway and its theaters
just a block or two away from times square
wednesday matinee attendees are bus'd in
 they clog the area
gawking

 now

with the new improved times square
they are there
like that
 every day

okay

however much i hate it

i am going to miss it

we are moving in under 90 days
we're getting new id cards
 we're prompted
 everywhere we look
 to
 start the purge
 get rid of
 toss out
shred
archive
 files books magazines

i dont adapt to change very well
 its taken me years
 to adjust
to the times square redo

i think
 by the time
i retire
god knows when that will be
nevertheless
it will likely take til
then
 for me
to
come to terms
with
 working
downtown

from a roof top

last friday
 i visited
 a blog friend
another
new old friend
 she took me
to
 her little roof top
 where
i could see many water towers

 i tried to capture
 a line of them
 she said
 were
like
 a chorus line
 i am paraphrasing
 as
 i can't remember
 now
 what
 she actually said

alas
 i could
 not
get back
 far enough
to get them
 all
 into frame
without
 falling
 off
the roof

 i took this one
 through
 the railings
 that kept me
from
taking
 a tumble
down
into
the street

thanks again for inviting me up!

fries oh yeah

the weather
 this weekend
 has
been
 fabulous

 friday
 i visited a blog reader
who is now a new old friend
 she lives on west 95
her charming apartment overlooks
 pomander walk

 i now think i 'get'
what
my rooftop shooter friends
like
about
 being up
 overlooking
 things

saturday
we took jack to the vet
his annual checkup
he passed with flying colors
no chest sounds
a excellent thing
 to lack
 if
 you have asthma

 late in the afternoon
 we took a walk
 down along the river
 came home
ordered in
 some
island burger and shake
taco salad moi
 burger him
fries oh yeah

sunday
 was
 another amazing day
my out of town friend carrie
 and
her daughter
 met me
for mani/pedis
carrie's husband dave joined us for brunch
a walk up to 100 street
central park's pool
 not the one
where the kids swim
the one
 where
turtles herons ducks
hang out
 then
 a walk along the ravine
 to
 the water falls

wimsey

none of these is completely in focus
wimsey
named for lord peter wimsey

if you dont know
 who that is

he did not stop moving his head
chewing the grass
totally
ignoring
3 photographers
pointing
 cameras and iPhones
at him

i guess he's used to the attention

another sunset

as
 we walked
 down
 through the park
 the other evening
 a flock
 of
canada geese
 took flight

 i wasn't quick enough
 to get a decent shot
 my 35mm lens
 is a dream
 but
 in this case
it was
far
too
 short

tho
 did
capture
a pretty scene

new old friends

yesterday
after a quick trip to the dentist
 something isn't right
i dont see anything if it gets worse come in immediately

 i met
carrie from california
 her husband dave
 and
milan who lives in new jersey

 except for dave
 i have known
 carrie and milan
for a year or so
 via
 their instagram photos

like meeting another blogger
 the connection
 is amazing
 you feel
 as
if you've known
 these people forever

we had lunch in our cafeteria
 3 hours
of
chatter

they went off to photo hunt

 i went back to work

we met at my apartment at 7
walked
through
 riverside park
 down
to the river
to
shoot the sunset

water tank project

finally
 the water tank project
 is
 literally
 getting off the ground

 the first tank
 is now done
i didnt take this photo
 i 'borrowed' it
 from
the water tank project facebook page

the artist is laurie simmons
the location is 29th street at 11th avenue

if you are in the neighborhood

look up!

for more info about this project
here's a link to the website
and
here's a link to an article in

weekend blather

i met my friend judy
 for a late lunch
 on friday

 ihung around the hood
 on saturday
it was a mostly overcast day
 but
 it didnt rain
 as predicted
 because
i carried my umbrella and left my sunglasses at home
 you're welcome

 sunday
 was
 equally blah
 again
the morning rain ended
 the sun came out
 you're welcome
 yup
schlepped the umbrella left the sunglasses at home

 what
 i didnt do
was
take many photos
 this weekend

i did
 get
this shot of toonman
at work
along
 with his assistants

rest in peace

on thursday morning
 i had
 a text message
 from
our 'adopted' son joseph

 he wanted me
 to take a
'good' photo' of 'the memorial to eric smith in front of the phone booth on broadway at 80th'

i texted back
 'sure. who is eric smith?'
 even tho joseph
who is working nights at the delacourt theatre
 was
still asleep at 5:30 am

i had no idea
 who
 eric smith was
i took the photos as requested

 emailed them to joseph

 later
 i was browsing facebook
there was a post by joseph
 citing the memorial
it answered
 my
'who is eric smith'
 question

 mr smith
 was
 a homeless man
a fixture in our neighborhood
he hung out on broadway at 80th street

when h&h bagels was on the corner
he would open the door for customers
in the hopes of getting a tip or a bagel
 after h&h closed
and
verizon opened
 he continued
to be a presence on the street

 you may recall this photo

that
was
 mr smith
in front
of
 the defunct h&h bagel windows

rest in peace
mr smith

games dogs play

a few weekends ago
 we walked
up
 the promenade
 in
 riverside park
past
 the dog run

 i always
look over as we walk by
 this time
 i had to stop
had
to take a few shots

there was a game going on
 that skinny guy
 had a stick
he was playing
tag
 tug of war
sort
of
 teasing the other dogs

he'd let one of the other dogs get the end

he'd wait
 and
then
pull away

i wished i had my longer lens with me
 because
the dog on the left
 the expression
 on his face
 is
priceless

city daily theme day - august - take away store

i
 of course
 was
unprepared
 for
august's
 city daily photo monthly theme

the theme is
'take away store'

i am not sure what that means

we've no stores here selling take away
 ha ha

 amazingly
 in over 23,000 photos
 i have
none
 of
the inside of a store
 of
 any kind
 selling anything

 but
 i did come up
 with
 this a peek
 into
a tiny hole in the wall flower shop
called appropriately enough
posies

 you can
 certainly
 buy and take away
their
 lovely bouquets

if
you'd like
to see
how others
 have
 met this challenge
