in the park with

cannot
 remember
 this
 cutie's
 name

 i have been sitting
 here
 playing
 the alphabet game

 you know
 say
 the alphabet
 hoping
 a letter
 will
trigger
 the memory
 the name

 didn't work
 but
 she
was
 adorable

post thanksgiving blather

i was
 immediately
 sorry
 i didn't
document
photograph
 the end of an era

sitting on the shelf
 of
one
of our front windows
is
 a fire bucket
 that
  i stole
er
 followed
 me
home
 from the garage
 of
 my parent's home
 up in the bronx
 about
a lifetime ago

 it contained
 until
 thursday morning
 a plant
 a philodendron
 i had
 for more years
 than
 i can recall

 i know
 i had it
 in
our studio apartment
 it moved
 down here
 to
 our one bedroom
 the
 only
 plant
that
survived
 the move

we had
 a lot of sunlight
 upstairs

 down here
 there's not much direct sun
 i guess
 i could grow mushrooms
 but
 i digress
 the plant
 had been surviving
  benign neglect
 for
 a
long
 long
 time

 i opened the shutters
 oddly
we have our shutters
 inside
 the window
 in place of curtains

  don't ask

 the little begonia plants
 i bought
for $1 each
 that
we kept
 in the window box
were
 dead

 they'd survived
 a lot
 but
this
 last frost
 killed them
of course
i had to open the window
 bring in their dead bodies
toss them
into
 a plastic garbage bag
then
toss them out

i looked
 at
the fire bucket
 deciding
 now
 was the time
to
 86
 the dying plant
 as soon as
 i got back inside
 i thought
 damn
why didn't i take photos

 oh well

 i do have a photo
 of
one of the leaves
 that blew in
 while the window was open
 as
 i removed the begonia bodies

 no
 it didn't land
 on my keyboard
 i put it there

 as
 i write this
i am still in my pjs
the dog show is on the tv
toonman is on the phone with his daughter
who lives in little rock

 soon
we will straighten up the apartment
figure out
the timing
 of
 the reheating
of
the prepared
thanksgiving hanukkah
food
 my sister
 will be here at 3

  tomorrow
 (today as you read this)
i am spending time with my friend's daughter laura
we're going shopping
 after we have breakfast

later in the day
i am meeting my friend mary for lunch
 and
 on saturday
 i am meeting
my friend lauren and her fabulous twins
 for
brunch
 at
 the plaza hotel

i will be so stuffed by then
i will likely need
 to fast
 on sunday

i do promise photos
and
lots of blather

 i hope you all
  had
wonderful
family time
at
 your thanksgiving

i am sure we did too

yeah thats dust on the keyboard cover

gobbletov

i am
 not
sure
 why
 its not called
 hanukving or thanksgivukkah
  i guess
gobbletov
was
catchier

  i don't cook

for many thanksgivings
after
my parents
 moved to florida
 they would come north
 stay with my sister
we'd all get together
 mom would cook

after my parents passed
 my sister and i
 would
 alternate
 hostessing

 toonman and i
 would trek
 over
 the 4 blocks
 to her apartment
or
she'd trek here

 for many years
we
 mocked
 the holiday
 ordering
 pizza
chinese
 thai
 or
indian food

in the last few years
 i
 ordered
prepared
 traditional foods
 from
 various sources

 last year
 we ordered
 from
eli zabar
the brother
of
the guy
who owns zabars
just up the street

 eli
 provided
 a scrumptious dinner
 i had
 only
 to work out
 the timing
 so
 most
everything
 was hot
 at
the same time

 it pretty much worked out

 food was so good
 this year
 i ordered from him again
 this year
 because
hanukkah began on wednesday at sundown
 i also
 ordered
 some traditional
 hanukkah dishes

 brisket and potato pancakes
 as well as
 the turkey and fixings

 i will open some malbec
 it works
 for both occasions/menus

 toonman
 schlepped
 all over the hood
 to find us
 candles for the menorah
 i brought a table cloth
for
the card table

we're all set

i hope
 whichever
 holiday
 you are celebrating
that
 you do it
 with
family and friends and lots and lots of food!

towers

another
week
another
 water tower
 or
 two
this week
 you
 get
 the freedom tower
to boot

bay-bee its cold outside

truly
 no joke
 it was
 in
 the 20s
 this morning
 when
 i left
to
beautify™

 i may complain
 about
 the cold
 the wind
my ears hurting
 but
 it doesn't stop me
from
 going out

i have a weekly mission
 to try
to keep
to preserve
 as much
 of me
 as i can
 with
 help
 from
professionals

good mani/pedis
are
 not only
 pampering
 but
 restorative
a way to relax

 it doesn't hurt
that it makes me feel good
while i try to look good

 getting my hair
 washed
 blown dry
 styled
is another part of my routine

my mother
believed
 in doing
 whatever
she could
 to make herself more attractive
 even
 tho
 my dad
 rarely
 commented
 he noticed

 i guess
 its just another way
 i take after her
 much
 as
 i like to deny it

 maybe
its the approaching holidays
 maybe
 its a Facebook conversation
i had with a cousin i am close to
 maybe
its the passing of another cousin
 one
i wasn't close to at all

 maybe
 it was finding
 these
 cups and saucers
that were mom's

 they were
up
 in
the above
the microwave cupboard
 covered in dust

 i was looking
 for
 something else

 don't
 ask me
what

cause
 i
 don't
 can't
remember

 they caught my eye
 i got the iPhone
 took a photo

 maybe
 i will take them down
clean them up
 use them
 for
dessert
 at
our
 combo
thanksgiving hanukkah dinner
on
thursday

we'll see

nuttin'

i slept til after 9
 i did
 a lot
 of
nothing

 one short trip
 out
 to get coffee beans

 we did have
 a
visitor
company

an old friend

 we actually
 worked out
 how long
 he and toonman
 have been friends

 since
 the early
70s

 both of them
 are now
 in
 their
70s

 so
its a long time

he's now a well known actor
catching up
 with him
 is fun

 after he left
i did
 more nothing

 then i realized
 i needed
to write
 a post
i needed a photo

i got involved
 in
labeling
 organizing
 cause
i want to do a collage
 of
how
times square's renovation
 has evolved

 that
got me
looking
 at some
 of
 the
under the canopy
shots

apparently
 i had not labeled
them all
 i am sure
 you couldn't live
 without knowing
 i have actually
 taken
 230 photos
in that series

 over on
instagram
 #218
 was selected
 as
 a photo of the day
by a group called
 eye_catching_photos

toonman
 ever
 the supportive husband
couldn't
 understand
 why
 i hadn't posted it

 so there it is
unsigned
straight out of the iPhone

dogs of galena

met
 these two
 outside
 a shop
 in
 galena
 back in october

one, the darker of the two,
belonged to a woman
 the other to a man

 the owners knew one another
 they'd stopped to chat
 when
 i spotted them

 i wish
 i could
 remember
 the dogs names

 the darker one
was
funny
 when the woman stepped
 into the store
 he began to cry
 like a baby

 he didn't like her
 being
 out of his sight
she had to keep walking
 to the door
 and
talking to him
 to keep his cries
 from
 escalating

  reminded me
 of
harry
 pre dinner time
 he cries
 loudly
 for at least 30 minutes
 every evening

 i have been known
 to
 threaten
 to
have
 his vocal chords
removed

TGIF

i am
 really
 truly
 tired

i feel a bit like this graffitied mailbox

 its friday
 i can't wait
 for
 the day to end
 so
 i can
 just
veg
 out

 thanksgiving
is
 next week

 that means
 my jury duty travel
 will be
just
 3 days
 with
 a
 4 day weekend
 then
 monday
 will be
the last day
 of
 my service

 yessssssss!

 have a great weekend!

day 216

while
 it may feel
 at times
 as if
i have served 216 days of grand jury duty
 thats not
 what
the title
of
 this post
 refers to

  that photo
 is
 #216
in a series
 i do
 called
 under the canopy

that is the entrance to my office building
on west 42nd street

 every morning
 i stop
 just
 at the same spot
 tho for a while
 i wasn't able to stand
 in
 that
precise
 spot
 because
 the construction wall
 outside the glass facade
 of
 h&m
 was
in the way

 now
 that
 h&m is open
 that impediment is gone
 however
the barrier
 to
 the right
 remains
 as
 the renovation of times square
 begins
 its
 final stages

 they've been
laying
 the
paving stones
of
the
pedestrian mall
 this past week

 its looking
 quite cleaned up

but
 i digress

 that photo
 is
 part
of the series
 i have been shooting
 standing
 in the same spot
 at approximately
the same time
 a little past 7 a.m.
 every morning
 as
 i am about to enter
 the building i work in

 the seasons change
 the light changes
 the number of people vary
 but
the canopy remains the same

 i find it fascinating

 oh
and
i zap
each photo
with a little of topaz labs buz sim
 why?
because
i want it to look
 more like a painting
 than a photo

 its not signed
 so
 don't strain your eyes
searching

 i guess
the end of the series
 in case you were wondering
 would be
 when my office moves downtown
 sometime
 next year

 grand jury duty
 ends
 december 2

its good to know things like that
it helps keep things in perspective

sunset

there
 have been
 some
 amazing sunsets
 lately

 most of the time
 i miss them
 because
i am still in the office

 this evening
(november 14)
 i guess
 i left early
(4:54 pm)

 as
 i came
out of the 72nd street station
 i crossed
 the street
 looked up
 and
 there
 it was

not
 only
 a magnificent sky
 but
 a
 water tower!

crossing it off the bucket list

i have long
whined
 about
 not being able
to get
a
 good
 full moon shot

saturday
evening
toonman and i
went up to the roof
to
 see what we could see

it wasn't even 7 p.m.
but
 there she was
 full and bright

i took this first one with the 35mm lens
then
i  went downstairs
to get
the big lens

to
 capture
 the beaver moon
in
all its glory

neither of these shots has been edited or signed

the shot
below
 was
 taken
with
the 28-300 mm lens

 i no longer
 need
 to
chase the moon

 crossing it
off
 my photo bucket list

now
 i am after
a rainbow

 wish me luck

puddles muddles and more

 west 80th street
is bring
repaved

 they're doing it
 in two stages

 first
 they come through at night
 rip up the existing paving

 this
 involves
 towing cars
whose owners
 either
didn't see/read
 or
 ignored
 the signs
 posted
 all
 up/down the street

 then
 using
 heavy
noisy
equipment
 they tear up
 the street

 last night
they finished towing at 8 p.m-ish

we live on the ground floor
 with
 two huge windows
 facing the street

 i was exhausted
  i was glad
 when
toonman pointed out
we wouldn't be able to hear the tv

 i went to bed

 he
 likely
 watched something on his computer
 with
 his headphones on

when i woke at almost 8 a.m.
 i felt better

 knowing
my monthly massage
was at 9:45 a.m.
made me
 feel
even better

it rained last night
 there were
puddles
 galore
 reflections
 to be seen

 sunshine
weakly
peeking
 through

 i headed across town
by the time i was done at the spa
it had turned into a nice day

the
 massage
 was wonderful

 my masseuse
 told me
i should
 request
payment from the state
the left side of my neck/shoulder
needed
 extra hard kneading
to
get the knots out

 came back across town
did some errands
but
i didn't get beautified™
i am trying a new salon tomorrow

 last week
 i waited
 almost a half hour
 past
my appointment time

when i spoke to the person who handles scheduling
 i was told
'its a saturday thats what happens

i told him
that wasn't the way a service business is run
i was going to say more
in the end
 i decided
it would fall on deaf ears

a better way to make my point
would be to take my business elsewhere

i will let you know how that turns out

downtown dogs

these
 two
were waiting patiently
 as their person
texted
 outside
 a small
 - what we call  -
vest pocket park
 just off
franklin street
downtown

i am
 as you read this
 relaxing

its been
 like
 working two jobs

another 9 days to go

we're 23 diverse individuals

halfway
 through
service
on
 the grand jury

i have learned
my patience
 runs
 thin
 quickly

my tongue
 has
 been
 bitten
 to the quick

do tongues have quicks?

the grand jury
 is
 a secret process
 so
 i can't blog about it
 specifically
 but
i think
 maybe
 character portraits
 of
my fellow jurors
 like
these are okay

there's a young man
 who believes
 the grand jury system
 is flawed

the first day
he asked to see the judge

 clearly
 the judge was unimpressed

he didnt get excused

after our first case had been presented
the assistant da read us the law

 that
 young man
questioned
how a defendant had been found
how the line up had been organized

he was asked to step into the ante room
he was in there for 45 min

the rest of us
 sat
waiting

 he returned
with
 a stack
 of
 reading material
he
pored over
 while
another case was presented
after which
 he refused to vote

12 votes are required
 one way or the other

 we're 23 people

his abstention was moot

we
are
 such
a diverse
opinionated
 group
 intent on being polite
on doing things
 'fairly'

 the combination
has
 made
some of the deliberations
 drag on

 at one point
we were voting on how to vote

there's a case
i cant tell you anything about
 its
 a
he said/he said

its not going to be an easy one that

tallest building in the land

there
 was

competition
for
bragging rights

 the competitors

 in this corner
 nyc's entry

 the freedom tower
 aka
 one world trade center
standing
104 stories high
 at
a symbolic
1,776-feet

 in the other corner
chicago's entry

 formerly
 the sears tower
 now
 the willis tower
 talling in at
 108-stories
1,451-feet

the winner

the freedom tower

it
won
by
spire!

downtown water towers

toonman
 pointed out
 an
awkward
 what
wording
 in my post on sunday

the other day
 when
 i was reviewing the photos
i taken

i cant
blame
 the camera
 for
 my typing errors
 clearly
it should have been:
i had taken
he told me to fix it
i said
no can do its published
but
 like
all publications
 i can
 issue
 a my bad
a correction

 okay honey?

courts
were closed
 on monday
 for veteran's day
 but
 i am back
 commuting
 tween
 office and court house
 again
 as of tuesday

 it was nice
 to have
 a full day
 in the office
 to really catch up

of course
 the rain
the snow
 yes
we had a bit of snow on tuesday
 didnt make the return fun

here's a shot from a sunnier day last week

veteran's day

107th Regiment Monument

The World War I service of New York’s 107th infantry regiment
is honored with a large bronze sculpture
in
Central Park.

The 107th Regiment Monument,
dedicated in 1927,
features seven soldiers,
in a variety of poses,
on a large granite base.

Three soldiers in the middle are charging,
the soldier on the far right
(as you face the monument)
is preparing to throw hand grenades,
and
the second soldier from the left
is
supporting a badly wounded comrade.

The east face of the monument’s base bears an inscription reading:
 “Seventh Regiment New York,
One Hundred and Seventh United States Infantry,
in memoriam,
1917-1918.”

Today,
Veteran's Day,
we honor
all
who served

all
who serve
to protect us

Thank you
all.
