dennis

what a face
hard to resist
trust me i didnt even try
his people tell me he is an imp
maybe his full name is dennis the menace
he's a schnauzer cairn mix
adorable, no?

the dogs
 i meet
 outside
 irving farms coffee
are the nicest
 and
 they have the nicest people
with
 them

 the coffee's quite good too

this and that

i thoroughly
 enjoyed
 all
the comments
 yesterday's
sales associate photo
 provoked

a lot of you
wondered
 about her shoes
 others
 were concerned about her attitude

 it was interesting
 to see
what you saw

 thats kind
 of
what
 got me
 sharing photos
 of
what
 i see
 and
 blogging about it

may i say thank goodness for auto correct because i seem to be mistyping a lot today

before
 i share
another photo
 from last weekend
eastside adventure
i want
to
 share
 two wonderful books
 i read
 robert ferrigno
is a favorite author of mine
 he writes involving novels
 with really good characters
the girl who cried wolf
 is his latest
 after a really good trilogy
called
 the assassin
 i enjoyed the assassin series
but
i really like his other books more
this was a return to that style

 the other read
 was bittersweet
louise penny's latest and possibly the last
 tho she seems
to have sort of left the door open for more
of
chief inspector gamache of the sûreté du québec series
 how the light gets in
 followed
 a beautiful mystery
 which
 did not
 in any way
 end beautifully

so when i downloaded this new one
 i did something
 i dont often do
 i read
i peeked
at
 the beginning
 of the last chapter
 i just needed
to be able
to read the whole book
 calmly
 without rushing
 without skimming
so i could learn what happens
to one of the central characters

 i must say
 this book
is
 so well plotted
even tho i knew what happened
i didnt know how it came about
she saves
 all that
for
the next to last chapter
 which i didnt look at

 both these
 well
all three of these books
are wonderful
 i highly recommend them

 and
 now
 here's a photo
 i hope
sparks the same sort of response
the last one did

 this is my last fridaycation
 and
 a 4 day weekend
 woot
so
 i promise
i will get out and take more photos

waiting

a sales associate
have you noticed there are no longer sales people?
 waits
 for the manager
 or
whoever
holds the keys
 to come
 open
this boutique
 on madison avenue

it was sort of like seeing a living mannikin

edited because seriously i know how to spell waiting

sunday in new york

there
were
 a lot of people
 out
 on
 amsterdam avenue
on
sunday

there was a lot to eat

grilled meats

 watermelon

corn

 if you werent hungry
 you could be
entertained
 or
 shop

there were
caps

jewelry

nail polish

me?

before
wandering
the
street fair
i got my
mani/pedi
 as
 i aways do at polished

just ducky

yes
 i know
 they are not ducks
they're
 canadian geese
 eh

 took this last weekend
 pre-trip
 fall
ouchie

thankfully
 the camera was not hurt

the photo
was
subjected
 to
 topaz labs restyle nature preset
 i forget which
sorry

 my thigh
 is healing
 rumors
 of
bruises
discoloration
were greatly exaggerated
 by me

 after a week of ache
 there's
 now
 a smallish
 purple splotch
that even a deep tissue massage
 performed
today
(saturday)
 at
 exhale spa
 by my favorite masseuse
didnt worsen

i got to take some fun
 to me
 snaps
over on the eastside of town
 i will share them
eventually

my weekend
so far
 has
been quiet
aside
 from
errands, the massage, more errands a walk in the park
nothing
much
has happened

 but
hey
there's still sunday

lexie

i think
it was
 lexie
 or
 maybe
 it was
laxie

 i sometimes mishear
no
 i dont
 i have excellent hearing
but
 her person said it twice
 it sounded slightly different
whatever

 she is an adorable pup
 i met her
 outside irving farms coffee
 last weekend

 she refused to sit still
 her head
 kept
swiveling
 to watch
all the people
 going
 in and out

her person
 tried
 to get her
to look at me
but
that never happened

so
 you're stuck
 with
this slightly blurred shot of her head

her person's legs
 however
perfectly
 in
 focus

just one more fridaycation ...

i feel
a bit
like
 this
 hollyhoke
 in the riverside park
 community garden
 fading
 winding
 down

 i've this friday
 and
 next
 then
 its back to full weeks
 five days
 up at 5:30 a.m.

i love my job
 but
i
 will
miss
 my
long
 weekends

blue moon? ha!

there was a blue moon last night
the next one is in 2015
 i should live so long
 i wont
 be
 going
 to
 try and capture it

 last night at 10ish
 i said to toonman
should i go up to the roof and see if i can get a shot of the blue moon

 he laughed
 no
 he didnt really laugh
 he did
 say
 something
 quasi smart ass-y
i have blocked it from memory

 i did say
as i walked out the door
i am only taking my iPhone

 hey
in paris
 i got amazing shots
 at night
of both the eiffel tower and an almost full moon

 really

 so
up to the roof
i went
 i stepped out
 looking up
laughed
 and
said
 aloud
 what a surprise
 clouds

  seriously
 never
again
 not
even
 for
 a
chartreuse moon

yes, another water tower

exiting
riverside park
 last friday
 waiting
 for the traffic light
 to change
we were standing
on
 riverside drive
 at
79th street
 that water tower
 is
 atop
riverside towers hotel
 we live
in
 to
the right of it

 you can
 just
 make out
a corner
of
our roof
 peeking
 through

 our water tower
 is
further in
to the right
 so
 its
 not
 in
 this
shot

so sweet

i talked
so
much
 this weekend
 i thought
i would start off the week
 with
 just a photo

toonman and i
 saw this couple
 walking toward us
 on saturday
 in riverside park

 i waited
 til
 they passed us
 turned
took this shot
 it looks
 as if
 she's walking behind him
 she's not
 its the angle
 i shot it from

 they
were
actually
holding
hands

boy, she does a lot of reading

i am a compulsive book buyer
 i read
 every saturday
the sunday ny times book review
 i read
 almost daily
 once a week
i try to read my friend caite's book review on her blog
they always lead me to bn.com
where i buy books
 like
 others
 buy candy
 satisfying
 my book sweet tooth

 occasionally
i buy one
that isnt as tasty
 recently
 that happened
with a series
 i used to love
 jeffery deaver's lincoln rhymes novels
 the latest one
 i downloaded
the killroom
  was a stinker
the writing defied reading
seriously
its hard not laugh
 when
a villian is
described
'damn, the man could give donald sutherland a run for his money
in the distinguished older power-broker role.'

seriously?

i read on a little further
 but
when he began to describe
 in minute detail
how his killer was going to prepare his dinner
i archived it
done
over
you've lost me deaver

 what did i read instead?

an new addition to a much better series by michael connelly
  the fifth witness
better written
 although
i anticipated the twist at the end
i dont think it was a fault of the writing
 so much
 as
my natural skepticism

 that was a quick read
 so i moved on
 to a young adult series
wolves of mercy falls
 by maggie stiefvater
 about werewolves
 it was really good
 but also quick reading

i recommend it for young adults and us older adults
a good read is a good read

another semi disappointment
 is
 elizabeth george's
foray into young adult writing
i wish she'd relied on her usually good dialog
 instead
 of
well
 not exactly
 dumbing down or talking down
 but
 definitely lacking
her usual strong narrative
she writes the Detective Lynley novels i adore
anyway
  the edge of nowhere
wasnt bad
 but
 i will tell you this
she leaves off in the middle of a plot advancement
i assume
 because
she or her editor
thought it would be a way to get the reader to buy the next book

i am not sure
i will
i thought it was a cheap trick

my next book

 i know
 its insane
how much i read
i will let you in on a secret
 promise not to tell?
 okay
its been dead quiet at the office this summer
#1 boss has been traveling a great deal
#2 boss is terribly self sufficient
so aside from making sure the office doesnt implode
i have a lot of time on my hands
i have been reading at my desk

 i digressed

next i read
  night circus
(erin morgenstern)
 a book
 i originally bought in paperback
looked at and decided it wasn't my cuppa
i gave it to a friend
who couldnt believe i didnt want to read it

i not long ago downloaded it to my nook app on my ipad
where i do all my reading
 and
 i
 loved
 loved
 loved
 loved it

 such an amazing involving plot
such a visual book
i could picture all the scenes so clearly
i think this will be a book
i re-read sometime down the road
 if you've not read it,
do

i dont go on about books very often,
i enjoy a read and say so
 i dont gush
night circus
is a gusher

 next up
 was
  the art forger
a good read
 (b.a. shapiro)
even with all the twists and turns
i didnt love it
i liked it enough to recommend
 so thats something

i stumbled onto a series set in medieval england
 priscilla royal's
(i am betting thats a pseudonym)
medieval series
set in the time of henry iii
 in a convent/abby
 its very good
 terrific period detail
 a well plotted mystery
 the first book
  wine of violence
was good
enough to get me to buy the next book

just started another but i think i may have over done it for one post
here's a photo
 i took saturday
walking in the park with toonman
stretching out my aching thigh muscle

the one with a long story, there's a dog too

yesterday
 was
 a lovely day
 sunshine
 moderate temps
 the hotel next door
 power washed
 the street
 in front of their doorway
 just below our building
 the noise
 was
really
 obnoxious

 toonman and i
decided
 to take a walk
 hoping
 by the time
we returned
 the noise
 would
 be
 gone

 we headed
 out
 walking up
 riverside drive
entering
 the park
 at 83rd street
 where
there was a small playground
 an ice cream cart
and
a dog walker

we walked
 uptown
 along the promenade
 i took lots of photos
 at
 the community gardens
with
 the
 big camera

then
 we walked
 down
 to the water
 enjoying
 the breezes
 the boats

it
 was
really a lovely day
 when
 we got to 72nd street
 we decided
 to
head home
 you've
got to climb
 some
 amazing
steep
 stone
 stairs
to exit the park at 72nd street

can you see
 there
 at the top
 that
yellow and white
strip

thats
 a recent addition
 i believe
 it was done
 because
 the last two steps
are
further
 apart
higher
 then
the distance
 between
 all the other steps

i dont know why its like that
i do know
 toonman has tripped there
 i have tripped there
 and
 yesterday
i really took a hard fall

 one minute
 i was stepping up
 to
 the last step
 then
 i was on the ground
 the big camera
 flew
 off
of
my right shoulder
 the iphone
 flew out
out
of
 my left hand
 i
was
 on
 the
 ground
feeling
 really stupid

toonman grabbed the big camera
afterward he said he didnt know what to do
 but
 he assumed the worst
deciding in a flash
 to
 grab the camera
 so
i wouldn't see how badly it was damaged

 it wasnt damaged at all

neither
 was the iphone
which
i picked up before he took it from me
 and
 then he dropped

 there was a lot
 of
oh fuck gaddamn holy crap jeezus
 expletived
around

 my thigh was really hurting
 my right arm was hurting
the palm of my right hand felt raw

 did
 i mention
 my right thigh
 really
 hurt

 two nice young men
stopped to see if i was ok
 i said yes
 i was mostly embarrassed
 one of them
 pointed
out
 the
 height difference
 between
that last step and the others

 i said
 i know
thats why this is so embarrassing
its not like
i didnt know

 anyway

i thanked them for distracting me
 from the pain
toonman
 helped me up
  we headed home
 i iced my thigh
 but
i think its going to be
a lovely shade of purple
with
some
 yellowish green
 for
a few days

damn steps

oh yeah the power washer was gone
peace
and
quiet
had
 returned
 to west 80 street

open

if you get hungry
 in the columbus circle area
you have a lot of options
 these
three food carts
 outside
 compete
 with
upper level
 upper scale restaurants
 inside
the time warner center
 as well as
whole foods
on the lower level
where you can shop and eat

  last friday
 when
i went for blood work
at Roosevelt Hospital
'just around the corner'
my cholesterol was tested and its normal
i took this photo
but
 didnt stop to sample

only 3 more fridaycations

water tower

nope
its not wednesday

 its tuesday
 usually
 toonsday

 toonman
 is working
 on
a new patsy and mickey video
 it will be here tomorrow

we reversed things
to
 keep you on your toes

on the way out of riverside park sunday
 i looked up
 those two tanks
atop that building
 on west 79th street
were new to me
 tho
 clearly
 they've been there for years

come back tomorrow for a terpsichorean treat

really a lot of blather with some digression

so the weekend winds down
 soon
i will be feeding the cats
 harry begins his whining cry
earlier and earlier
 each evening

 saturday
when we took jack to the vet for his yearly exam
 i asked
if he'd ever done any vocal chord removals
 he hadn't
he also said he doubted i really meant it
ummmm

 i love my long weekends
i wish i could have them all year 'round
i am sad summer is coming to a close
at least on the calendar

i know the weather wont be unsummery
 for another month or more
 which
 will make
 the
 lack
 of
 fridaycations
 all the sadder

 however
after the cats are fed
i will be indulging in some sushi

sunday
 after beautifying
i
 bought another bottle
of the delightful
gouleyant
 a french malbec

 did you know
 malbec grapes originated in france
 they did

apparently some sort of rot affected the vineyards
 and
 some french growers
moved to argentina
where the climate and hilly region
 was perfect for the grapes
i learned this from the very nice wine shop salesperson
i like knowing things like this
not only do they fill a blog
 but
 they serve as clever repartee
should
 i ever be invited
 to
dinner
somewhere
sometime

 getting back to my point
 what was it
ah yes
 after
i beautified
 before
i went to the wine shop
 i went to planet sushi
 ordered
 take out for dinner
i am looking forward to it
 and
 to watching some catch up
of
 pre recorded television

 last nite
 we watched
case histories
 re-run on bbca

 case histories
is
 a
 book
 by
 kate atkinson
 who i adore

 the made for bbc series
was quite faithful to the book
 with
 one exception
 and
 one modification

edinburgh in all its glory was exchanged for cambridge
 and
louise showed up in a full book before she was due

i am not upset or disappointed by either

 if you've not read
case histories
you should
 also
read
 started early took my dog
when will there be good news

 all 3 feature jackson brodie
 played in the tv series
by the extremely excellent jason isaacs
he starred in the short-lived 2011 cbs tv series awake
doing an amazingly good american accent
(if you have time warner, you no longer have cbs but that a whole other post)

moving right along

i also ran
 into
 those wonderful dogs
 steve mcqueen and ali macgraw

 remember them?
 ali was ill
but she's better now
 looking quite fit
 as did their person
 whose name
i keep forgetting to ask

this weekend
we also went for a walk
in
riverside park
 took
 the big camera
 here's
 a shot
since
you sat through all that blather

not signed i really want harry to shut up and i really want my sushi

wherein i sound like i actually speak camera-ese

yesterday afternoon
we
took a walk
 in
riverside park
 took along the big camera

 played with some settings
on the D7000

 there's a
'scene mode
setting
on the mode dial'

you
 rotate
 the
 'mode dial'
then
rotate
 the
'main command dial'
 until
 the
 'desired'
scene is displayed in the monitor
(i had to look up all the camera jargon cause calling things little screen, wheel thingie wasnt sounding very learned ha!)

 i chose
 close up

 took this shot

 after
 i downloaded it
 i played a bit
with
 topaz labs new restyle plugin

applied
 'nature's road home'
 under
the 'nature' options

 i kinda like it

dog walker

here
in the city that never sleeps
 where
 dogs
 are not permitted
in stores places where food is sold
 where
people own dogs
but work all week
there
 are
dog walkers

they do not come cheap

 this woman
had stopped to talk to another dog walker
 with his charges
 just out of frame
 there to the right

i was wielding
 the iPhone
so
no wide angle
to get them all in

how much do they charge
 i dont know
google it

fridaycation

another friday
 rolls
 around

i am happy to say
i will be sleeping past 5:30 a.m.
i will be limiting the food intake
 after a week
 of
 over eating
pushed the scale
 to numbers
 i
 cannot
face

and
 i will be
 going
likely not by cab
 but
by foot
 to the lab
 to have blood work done
 to check my cholesterol

 and
you?

what will you be doing?

stuff, good stuff

you know
 i love stuff
 i love
wonderful
useful
stuff
 i love sharing

recently
i came across two products
i am now in love with
 no one
 is paying me
 to tell you this
 i wish they were

 alas
 they are not

 the first
 is for hair
its part of living proof's line of products
my fantabulous hair stylist tim rogers
turned me on to their products
he actually does get paid by them
he is one of their spokespersons
i use their shampoo called frizz
the label really looks like that
 clever no?

 well it really works
my hair's frizz free
they have a new product
one tim did not turn me onto
 its called
 satin hair serum
 oh my good golly
 is it wonderful?
 it is!
i got it as free sample
 one of the neat things
 about living proof
is they ship free
 accept returns free
 and
 give you a free sample
each time you shop on their website

anyway
i used the sample this past weekend
truly
 my hair
is
smooth and gorgeous
 really

the other wonderful product
is for
skin care
i found it via my friend rosemary's blog
she was touting a beauty line
 from freeman
 i needed
a new sunscreen make up base
 so i tried it
i love it
 its called
 eclos hydraprimer

 its inexpensive
 and
it comes with a money back coupon you mail in for a rebate
i didnt know about the rebate
 so
on top
 of
 finding a great new product
 i got my money back
cool
no?
yes!

next
i want to tout a fabulous book

me before you
by jojo moyes

 i read it
 devoured it
 couldnt put it down

 the after effect is
(thank you bethfishreads for this great expression)
 book hangover
i cant bring myself to let go of the feelings
 this book stirred
 if you loved
 time traveler's wife
 you will love this
 but
 be prepared for tears

oh yeah
 i got a survey
that will lead to jury duty
 now
thats
not
 something
i am looking forward to
even tho
 i think
 everyone should serve
i really have done my share of serving over the years

that is all

this and that

wasnt it a nice weekend?

  the weather here was wonderful
 even
 tho
saturday
was mostly dank drizzly
 it was for me
 perfect for curling up
with
another good book
divergent
by
veronica roth
 not
our
another
veronica roth
fascinating no?
well
it is to me

  my fridaycation
was relaxing
 took
 as i told you yesterday
a long walk and lots of photos

saturday
i did a bit of a sleep in
when i woke
i was confronted by toonman
 announcing
 his emails were missing
 yup
 they were
 2 years worth

i fiddled around a bit before calling apple
 thank goodness
the recent purchase of the new (only to him) os
included 90 days of free phone tech help
i was on the phone with jeff
for 2 hours
before he handed me off to tyler
who was able to remotely access the computer
jeff hadnt gotten his remote access wings yet
 literally guide me through restoring
 almost all the missing missives

it was a learning experience for me
i consider myself a bit of a tech nerd
 what i learned from tyler
has
 expanded
 my
  ahem
expertise

if you need to recover lost emails i am your go to!

after that
i curled up with coffee
 much needed
 and
 divergent
didnt come up for air til dinner time
after which
we caught up with newsroom
i love aaron sorkin's writing

sunday
was mani/pedi at polished
followed by brunch
 with my friend cheryl
 at a new place called
 ag kitchen

 if you know the hood
its where city market cafe used to be
 on columbus at 73-74 sts

after brunch
 we walked
 in
out
 of
boutiques
 i got a pair
 of
micro fibre
 apparently making a comeback
 leggings
at
theory
i am really into leggings

 then
 tina blew out my hair
and
 here i am
sharing

so what did you do?

this was
 the apple bank
at
73rd and broadway
 now
 its condominiums
i love the donkey heads
on the wrought iron
 i think
 they are meant
to scare off
 the pigeons
