just another day

so today
tuesday
 as i write this
is our anniversary
yet
still pretty much
just another day

 toonman's been under the weather
 tho on the mend
we didnt go out to dinner
 truthfully
there aren't many places left to go
he can be very fussy about what he likes to eat

 i wanted to order pizza
i figured
what the heck
 lets eat all the carbs
i normally avoid

 turns out
the neighborhood staple for 51 years
 closed its doors on monday
 farewell to big nick's

 the other pizza places
serve thin crust pies
 toonman doesnt like thin crust

i dont really even feel hungry
i think a glass of wine will do it for me

took this on the way home
i walked up from 72nd street
snapping pix of the ansonia
the sky was still bright
 the clouds were fluffy

here see for yourself

its black and white

i intended setting up my sunday post on saturday
 i really did
 i am still not sure
 how
i forgot

 maybe
it was due to melted brain
from the deep tissue massage saturday morning
 i pamper myself monthly
with
 a massage at exhale spa
i will not divulge the name of the person
who turns me into limp spaghetti

why

 because
if i do you
 will all book him/her
and
then i won't be able to get my special time

i will say that exhale is a wonderful spa
go find your own fabulous masseuse

 you may recall
how much i like wandering the upper eastside
the boutiques always have great display windows
 that make wonderful photo ops

i was in a black and white mood
 so
all of the photos i snapped
were done with my iPhone
 using the hueless app

none of them
 were edited
so
no signatures to hunt
 sorry

 none of this explains
my lack of post on sunday

i will admit
to spending a lot of time reading again

i wanted to just indulge
 i didnt want to think
i find myself thinking
when i read
wondering
 who dunnit
  how it will turn out

last week
i read
  the innocent
the second in a series by taylor stevens
 it required concentration
it was not as good as her first book
the informationist

then
on friday
i read the first in a series by lauren kate
 fallen
its a teen series
 but
 its really good

 i followed this up
 with
 devil's bride
now
that
was truly a non thinker
if you liked georgette hyers regency novels
 you'll love stephanie laurens'
(what is it with these two first name authors?)
 series
 cause
they
are
also
 very
 hot
sexy

maybe
 thats
what distracted me
 from writing a blog post

in any case
here
are the photos i took on saturday

 79th street
between
broadway and west end

 is
being
 marked

lisa perry's boutique window

 intermix's monochrome window

a chic woman waiting to cross east 79 street

she was waiting too

 and
 then
 this guy
who wasnt with her
biked right by

this isnt in b/w but i really am coveting them

so how was your weekend?

buster

well
he looked like a buster to me
 definitely
 a pit bull mix
sweet and patient
waiting outside a coffee shop on broadway yesterday
 i passed him
 then
 stopped
 to take his photo
 before
 resuming
 my
 oh
so
exciting
weekend
erranding

what a lovely evening

i am writing
this
 at
past my bedtime
 after
having had a wonderful evening
with
 a dear friend

 who came to town
to
 celebrate her
 'kids'
birthday

i was honored
to be included in the festivities
 at
robert
 a fabulous restaurant
on
 the 9th floor
of
the museum of art and design

 overlooking
 columbus circle

 we ate delicious food
 drank wonderful wine
and
 spent a lot of time
not only talking
but
also taking photos and posting them on instagram and facebook
 we are such bad adults
 setting
 awful examples

happy birthday emma and mike!

subway saga*

warning!
whining ahead

first
 let me say
 it usually takes 20 minutes
for me to get to my office from home
 that said
 and
for those of you who want to cut to the chase
 it took me an hour
to do that same trip on wednesday morning

it started off like any other morning
harry had overturned the garbage can
toonman got up with a charleyhorse in his leg
 discovering the mess
 gave harry hell

i pretended to still be asleep
 it was barely 5:15
when i got up 15 minutes later
harry
who usually greets me
with a loud and continuous cry til he is fed
was not at the bedroom door
 clearly
 he was still feeling chastised

 i got the cats fed
 the news/weather turned on
 took my morning meds
 began my morning rituals

exiting the apartment at exactly 6:50
 as i always do
arrived at the subway station
to see the usual 5 minute til the next train is due notice
and
 waited
 as i always do
 by playing with my iphone

it seemed as if 5 minutes had passed
i looked up to see more people waiting
 the next train notice said
 1 minute

 below that
instead
of another train coming in 3 minutes
it said
 delayed

 i should have known then
things were going to go bad

 when the downtown local arrived
i got on
when we pulled into 72nd street
there was an express sitting across the platform
 a crowd of people
 entered the local
 which
 then
 sat
 and
 sat
 and
 sat
 and
 sat

people were playing
 local express roulette
which one was going to move first

 an announcement
was made
 somewhat garbled
 as usual
 the gist was
there was a problem at 14th street
there was going to be limited service below 42nd street
if you were going to brooklyn
good luck

finally
the doors to the local closed
 and
 we were moving
we made it all the way to 59th street
 by the way
as we pulled into 66th
 the express
zipped
on
past
we however sat at 59th
 an announcement was finally made
 advising riders
 to get off and switch
 to either
buses
 or
 the 8th avenue lines

i opted for the bus

if i had been wearing sensible shoes
i would have taken the 8th avenue line
 and
walked to my office
 hell
if i had on sensible shoes
i would have walked from 59th street to 42nd
it really isnt a bad walk
 i wasnt
 i didnt
 i waited
forever
 for a bus
 a headache beginning form
my need for a big strong cup of coffee was urgent

i arrived in the office in a really bad mood at 7:45
 the quadruple expresso i had
 eased the headache somewhat
the mood
 hopefully
will improve
 before
 the commute home

*edited because the title should read SAGA not Sage .. gah

times square in the morning

i love
 the early morning
 i dont love
waking at the crack of dawn
 but
i do love the morning light
 especially
 in
 times square
 after
a rainy night
 before
 the city is rushing
its a great time to be out
with a camera or camera phone

i never noticed those water towers before
 right up there
just in front of google headquarters

my aching back

literally
no good deed
goes
 unpunished

toonman has a horrible cold
with a bad cough and fever
he also couldnt stand the air conditioning in the living room
which
is on energy saver
set on low at 77 degrees
during yesterday's over 90 degree heat and humidity

 to combat the 'cold air'
 he put on
 a long sleeved tee shirt
under a wool shirt
 long pants
then
 he went into the bedroom
 got into bed
crawled
under
 the sheet
cotton blanket
 and
down comforter

i turned off the bedroom air conditioner
 staying in the living room
 with the cool air
 i slept on the couch
which is a love seat
 a two seater
small

 this morning
 my back
 let me know
 how much
it didnt like my being a selfless wife
 sigh

we're going to have to compromise tonite
 because
i cant sleep on the love seat again
and
 he's still coughing and sneezing

 aint love grand?

so?

its
day
 five or maybe six
 of the current heatwave
supposed to be cooling off
supposed to have this big front
 swing on in
 bringing rain
 bringing temps
in the low 80s
 vs
 the high 90s

does this look like thats happening?

the only
umbrellas
i saw
 on
saturday
 were
being used
 as
shelter
 from
the
 sun

dog days

last week
 i zipped uptown
 midday
 to get a trim
 my 'bangs' were getting shaggy
i am over the
 cut it short thing

my hair cutter marked it up to
 'having a moment'

now
i am letting it grow a bit
  the 'bangs'
really more of a side dippy thing
was just too long

 anywhoo

 on the trek
through bazillion degree heat to the subway
 i passed
this man and his two dogs
yes
 there's another one
 there
 in the shade
see him?

  i felt for them
you can see that one there
is panting a bit
i bet
 he would have preferred
to be indoors
vs
 out in that sun

 i mean
wouldnt
you?

remnants

s

this old tree
 toppled
 uprooted
 during hurricane sandy
 was left where it fell
 in
theodore roosevelt park
 on the upper westside

the park which i visited last weekend
 has entrances
on columbus avenue and on west 81st street

  its fridaycation for me
so i slept in
will either spend the day hanging out
either at home avoiding the still stiffling heat
 or
maybe
 doing errands

 i am feeling very lazy

its a scorcher

waiting
on
broadway
for the m104 bus
 on
tuesday morning
 at
7 a.m.

missed the 6:56
 the next
 was
due at 7:18
 arrived at 7:17

it was frigid inside the bus
 outside in the shade
it was really hot

 apparently
we are having the longest heatwave in 12 years

 cant remember that far back
 cant remember
  july 6, 2010
 when it hit 103

 gah

i googled it here

looking up

saturday
while i was out and about
 i looked up
voila
 a water tank!

it and that banner have been there forever
 captured by me many times
 but
downstairs
la caridad
 a cuban chinese restaurant
has
 never
been
 discussed
 here
 its menu features
  awesome
 yellow rice
 red beans
 as well as
 perfectly steamed broccoli
 fried plantains
 cash only
 fast delivery
 or
eat in

there used to be another wonderful cuban chinese place
 called may something
 i forget
 but
i do remember
 they served
 the most delicious soup
 chinese soup
 they called it
 noodles
 thick slices of pork
 and
 an egg
 toonman loved that soup
we went there
 on one of the few
 real dates
 we had
 before
we began living in sin

 we did get married
 in fact
our 35 wedding anniversary
 is
approaching

 consider
 this
a reminder
 honey

weekend blather

as i write this
weekend
 is
 winding
 down
 the heat is ramping up
 ugh

 saturday
i did some errands
boredom drove me to take a walk
even tho it was soupy muggy looking like rain

 i discovered theodore roosevelt park
which is sort of behind the museum of natural history
 has an extension
 that dog legs
(which is funny not ha ha but ironic cause it contains a dog run)

 into
a small plaza with umbrella tables

 and
 a green 'lawn'
with pathetic sort of sprays of water

i am thinking the water pressure was low
otherwise
it really is a sad thing

its just behind the rose planetarium

after that bit of a wander
 i headed home

 began a new book
 first in a trilogy
what is it with me and books about forms of the apocalypse?
 this series
 is
by
justin cronin
 called
 passage trilogy
 so far
 its really good
in between
  the stand
toonman asked if it ended differently this time
 ha ha
and
 this
i read the latest elly griffiths book
 about bone archeologist ruth galloway

i think i am done with them
because
 they're becoming very predictable

sunday
(actually today tho you're reading this tomorrow your today)
was
 beautification
 nails

 nouveau red
a sort of dusky red orange
 not
 very
summery
but i like it

then hair
which needs a shaping badly
 i am now officially
 over wanting it short
 i am liking it longer
i am so fickle

what else?
 oh yes
i watched via netflix dvd
 paris j'taime
 it had subtitles
 i hate subtitles
 but
 it was mostly so charming
 i enjoyed it anyway
 my favorite vignettes
were
 quartier latin: gena rowlands/ben gazzara
14e arrondissement: margo martindale
 and
pigalle: bob hoskins/fanny ardant

i wished those had been longer
i want to know more about those characters
i recommend it to anyone who loves paris
 whether
you've been there
 or
not

so what were you up to this weekend?

none of the photos are signed, i was too lazy

its all in the details

this
 amazingly
 building
with
its
 detailed facade
 is the
alwyn court

it sits on the corner of 58th street and seventh avenue
aside from the gorgeous detailing on its facade
its other claim to fame
 the
ground floor
is home
to

i thought it would be interesting to share
 after
 sharing a photo
 of
rather busty parisian 'cherub'
over at through my eyes
brought some interesting comments

the cherubs here are far more cherubic, non?

you can read about the alywn
 here and here

pug alert

this fellow
 was
 busy watching something
 probably
 one of the sparrows
that come over from the lovely park
that is
the
place des vosges

 this cafe
the name of which escapes me
is where i had a lovely cappuccino
 and
 took photos of
many of the interesting diners
as
 they
 sat
sipped
smoked

the sidewalk cafes
 here in new york
are charming
 have interesting views
but
 dont permit dogs!

survey sez

i visit
several online shopping sites
 i like seeing
 whats new
 whats on sale

occasionally
 i even
 need something
 so
 i go shopping
 i prefer doing it
online vs going into a real shop
 because
 its easier for me
to back out of a web store
 without buying

 before my trip to paris
 i was consumed
 with finding the perfect tote
 i thought i had
in the end
 not so much

 still searching for it
 as well as
 that
 perfect black shoulder bag

 do not confuse the two
one is a life long campaign
the other is driven by whim
 i leave it
to
you
 to decide
which is which

 as usual i digress
hey
i almost forgot what sat me down in front of a blank blog post template this morning
 even
 segueing into a paragraph
 about something
 i read
 hoping
 the original premise
 would return

 it did

you can scroll down to read about the other 'thought' now
 or
 keep reading
 as
 i
am
 getting
 to the
 point

'the outnet'

while i dont truly love this site
 i must tell you
 about it
 because
 they are very smart
 have excellent customer service
 and
 i did find
 a really cool 'chanel-ish' jacket
 at a price
 i could not resist
 i ordered it
i know once its cool enough
 i will wear it
as often as
 i tote
the marc jacobs cross body bag
also
 at
 a
 very much reduced
 hard to pass up
 price
that was my first buy at the outnet

anyway
i ordered this jacket
i opted for the slow free shipping
yet it arrived within a few days
it was packed
amid lots of tissue
on a hanger
in
a classy looking reusable garment bag
along
with
 a free shipping return label
which did not get used

last week
an email popped up from the outnet
 asking
if i would take the time to participate in a survey
those of you who know me
 know
i love giving feedback
 giving good feedback
 is always a pleasure

well
color me
impressed
yesterday
i got not only a phone call
 which sadly i missed
damn phone
 sent it to voice mail
now there's feedback i would enjoy giving if only at&t would ask
the caller
left a message
thanking me for taking time to respond to the survey
 and
giving me a $30 credit toward my next purchase for doing so

there was also an email reiterating the message

now
 that's
 good
 clever
customer service

who can ignore a nice size credit?

i am not rushing over to shop
 right this minute
 but
the next time i need something
you know the outnet will be my first stop

and
here's what i almost wrote about

XAM
is the tag/name of an artist
 who installs
 birdhouses
 around
new york city as well as in los angeles and mexico city
 so far
 i havent spotted any
 but
 its an excellent reason
 to
 keep
 looking up

i read about XAM in a new york times article here

disclaimer:
no one asked me
 or
 is paying me
 to say these nice things
truth be told
i would have told you about the jacket and the outnet anyway

the ny times didnt compensate me either

on the street on the tube

we watch television in the evenings
 we watch shows
 that we've recorded
 usually the evening before
we do it for two reasons
 first
we detest commercials
hey
i worked in advertising for a lot of years
commercials do not interest me in the least

we also use the recorded yesterday shows
 to fill in the evenings
 when there's nothing on
 we would watch

makes sense to us

we record a great many shows
 to
spread out
 across
 the other evenings

yes
 there's a point here

 one of my favorite shows
 was
 the closer
when it ended its run
 there followed
 a 'spin off' called
 major crimes

i am enjoying it a lot

 last night
 we watched this week's episode
 thankfully
 due to the credits
i was able to recognize an actor
who i would never have recognized otherwise
 because
unlike
bruce willis
 tom berenger
 has
 not
 aged well

 back in the late 80s
i saw him in
 someone to watch over me
 and
fell for him
 what a crush i had
 what a difference
 30 years makes

any of you ever develop a crush on an actor?
have you seen them lately?

looking up

yeah
water towers
amazingly
 i wasnt looking for one
had no intention of posting one
 after all
 i had
 'run out'
of
 water tower inspiration

 clearly
 the towers
have a mind of their own

i went to the dentist on tuesday morning
 took the m104
 got off at columbus circle
because
 i am
neurotic
 about
 not being late
 i was very early
 so
i wandered a bit
 took some photos to share
took a different route

 normally
i would have walked directly down 57th street
instead
 i walked down 58th
a whole new vista was opened to me
 and
 you

 there's that construction site
 with
 three backhoes
some interesting contrasting styles of architecture
 and
2 water towers
 who knew?

i ended up on 7th avenue
where i took some more photos
 before
 heading to 57th
 and
 the dentist's office

what a lovely weekend, heat aside

it really was
 a lovely long weekend
 albeit
 incredibly
 hot and humid

the office closed on wednesday at noon
 for a 3 day holiday
 divine

 toonman works from home
so he didnt have to give himself a holiday
a old good friend of ours stopped by on wednesday
not expecting me to be there
 i always explain our relationship
 as
'he was toonman's roommate before i was'

so there was lots of good catch time
 lots of reminiscing
before he had to head off to connecticut to his lady's house
 so
 he didnt stay
 for
 the
 yummy
turkey meatball angel hair pasta dinner
 i made
i also made a big mess
 usually
toonman does the cooking
i left the rest of the weekend's meals to him

 the fourth
was brutally hot
 i spent almost all day
 on the couch
 re-reading
 the stand
 one of my favorite re-reads

 do you re-read books
 you enjoy?

 i do

 however
 the stand
(the unabridged version)
 is the one
i have re-read the most

i always start it on july 4th
 because
that was the date
i initially began reading it

i dont re-read it every year
its always a long time between readings
 its a long book
 too

 anyway
that's how i spent a lot of this past holiday
 that
and
 sleeping until 8:30 every morning
 what a treat thats been

i am sure going to have a tough time
on
 monday morning
 when
 5:30
 rolls
 around

we watched
a good day to die hard
a lot of fun
bruce willis
has
aged
well

john mctiernan
 a friend of toonman's
directed the first die hard
 so
 we're fans of the series

we also watched the macy's fireworks on tv
we are such couch potatoes

aside from that
beautification
a brunch with my friend cheryl
and
 some retail therapy
rounded out my time at home

right here
on
 the street
 where
 we
live

how did you spend the 4th?

on the street

i tried
 to
lighten
 brighten
 this up
but
the moodiness of the early morning
remains
42nd street is a canyon of sorts
those clouds seem to be pressing down
in a way they are
its been hot humid with periods of heavy rain
can you feel it?

jack russells on the move

on the afternoon
i wandered Paris
on my own
 my landmark
so as not to get lost
was
the hotel de ville
you can read about it here
anyway
as i was walking from there
 across one of the ponts
i spotted
 these two jack russell terriers
 straining
at their leashes
 practically
 hopping along
in their excitement
 which
 as we know
is
 simply
 a
jack
being
 a
jack

happy fourth of july!

july fourth
is
the
'official'
kick off
to
summer

nothing says
summer
to
new yorker
better
then
coney island

this week luna park suffered a small set back
there was a shakiness a swaying detected
in the famous astrotower
which by the way
 has
not
 been
operational
in
a
 long
time
however
it looms
over the rest of the park
should something happen
 it would be disastrous

the people in charge
are trying to come up
 with a way
 to
anchor the tower
to stop the swaying

as of this writing
it looks as if that part
of luna park
will
remain
shuttered

 lets hope
they
 reopen
soon
 giving
children of all ages
 a
 fun
 filled
summer

stay safe

water tower philosophy

so
 i think
 maybe
 i am approaching
being
 over
 featuring water towers every wednesday

i havent been out and about with the BIG camera
 since
 i got back from paris
 i haven't
 even
taken
many iphone photos
 since i am back

 maybe
 shooting over 700 photos
 is sort of
like
eating too much of something
you just dont have an appetite for it
 i dont know

 i spent a while
looking back
through
the over 18,000 images
 in iphoto
 to find one
 i knew
 i hadnt posted before

and
 its the day
before
 the 4th
i still dont have a fourth of july post

 the pressure is enormous
 not
 just
 to find an apropos photo
 but
to channel
the blather
to go with it

i better get in gear
 or
i sure wont be able
 to
 harangue
toonman
on monday
to produce a toon for tuesday

 i mean
 how
can
 you
 harangue
 if you aren't producing yourself

here's
where
the
 philosophical
comes in

ponder it!
