on the street

i took this
 on friday
as i was walking
to irving farms
 this entire weekend
the skies
 have been threatening
 but
 as of this writing
 thats all they've done

i bussed across town to the eastside on saturday
 had my monthly massage
i stopped into several of the madison avenue boutiques
 that are not represented
 here on the westside
there was nothing
 i needed
 nothing that screamed out
 buy me

a rarity
 believe me

 do you use instragram?
have you tried the new video feature?

i downloaded vine
 when it was introduced
 first
i couldnt figure it out
i know
 duh

 but
there were no instructions
 and
 seriously
 as adroit as i am
with
 technical stuff
 this
 stumped me

when i finally figured it out
it crashed
 my iphone
 each time i tried
 to
 upload
a video
 so now its history
deleted
 gone
 done

i was skeptical
about instragram's video
 but
it
works
 like a charm
 uploads without crashing
 saves a copy
 in my photo 'app'
 one shortcoming
 and
 its not instragram's fault
videos
do not hop
 via the cloud/photo stream
to
 imac iphoto

i am hoping that when os7 lands in the fall
apple will have addressed this

 okay
i am off to give Toonman a hair cut

dont ask

benjamin button

so it was the first fridaycation of the summer
hooray!
i slept in til 8 ayem!
hooray!!!
a very long
 it seemed
 involving dream
kept me from wanting to wake/get up
but
 i did

do any of you wear/use a bite thingie
one of those plastic protectors
 that are supposed
 to keep you
 from
 grinding down your teeth?
mine has deep gouges from clenching
mine also seems to keep me from totally keeping my mouth shut
hey! no snarky chatterbox comments please
not being able to close
ma bouche
 completely
 results in drool
 ugh
on my pillow
double ugh
tmi?
ha!

anyway
i got myself together
 wanted some fully caffeinated coffee
 got dressed
 headed out
 to
 my favorite coffee purveyor
irving farms

on the way
i saw this
adorable pup
waiting for the light to change

of course
i had to crouch down snap a few pix

when the light changed
 we all crossed broadway

 it turned out
we were
headed to the same place

his person and i
 had a short conversation
about dogs
 not
being
allowed indoors
 at
 food selling venues
 here
 in nyc
 but
i couldnt resist mentioning i had just returned
 in paris
 and
 it turns out
 in philadelphia
they are

i said
how adorable is your puppy
 only to learn
he was not a puppy at all
but
12 year old!

another person
 sitting outside
 sipping java
 commented
 he's a benjamin button dog

hence
 the caption
 of
this
overly
 long
 verbose
post

subway series - strangers #4

she caught my eye
 maybe
because
she was toting
3 totes
maybe
 because
 she was so intent
so absorbed
 she didnt react
 to the approaching subway train
 who knows
 why

 i edited
with
topaz labs black and white effects
 and
 a soupçon
 of
topaz labs clarify biz sim
 just because

water tower

took
 this
 a few years ago
 in the late fall
can you tell from the sky
 yup
 looking chilly

its up atop a building on west 36th street
 way west
 near 9th and 10 avenues
 i know
 because
i can read the sign on the building there
 but
 then
so
 can
you

questions

why
 am i
suddenly
 having
the
 most
vivid
dreams
this is not to say i wasnt having dreams before now
 i wake
with
 memories
 so strong
 some
i can still remember details
even
now
 hours
even
days later

why
 is it
when
 i wear flip-flops
 my heels
 get black
 yet
when i wear fit flops
 they
dont
the fits are about 2 inches 'taller'
does this mean
dirt cant jump

what the heck
 was
toonman
 dreaming about
 the other night
 he woke me
 yelling
 sieg heil
almost
 clipping
 my head
with
 a
'salute'

is it
possible
 the laundry detergent
we use
has some sort
of
dream stimulant
added

all through
 high school algebra
i
wondered
this

what are you wondering?

answers

well
maybe
 'they'
 read my blog
 or
maybe
 'someone'
 noticed
 the inordinate number of photos
 i have taken
 of this mess

 i doubt it

  but
 last week
 this
sign
appeared

 in typical
 new yorkese
 it tells you
nothing
but
 it does so in
a
nice
clean
 type face
in
 the official new york colors
seriously
new york's colors are blue and orange
i think
they threw in
 the green and black
 just to balance it out

do you
remember
 this
sign?

it made
 its appearance
 months into the work
 which
 has
 since
 mid-may
 been
complete

however
 this
repaired
replaced
now
 pristine
escaltor
remains
non-operational

i suspect
 the inspectors
 have been too busy elsewhere
 to come by
 and
 approve the work

  i will say this
i owe the city
 a thank you
for
 improving
my cardio vascular stamina

 there are 36 steps
 from the lower level
 to the street

i count them every morning as i climb them
so
thanks!

but ...

 i cant remember
 if i posted
 these two before
 but
 even if i did
 i know
 i didnt give them
a classic topaz black and white effect

 it was crowded
 on the street
 that day
 i was schlepping stuff
 that slowed
 me down

so i never did get ahead of them
to get a better look
 but
 doesnt
 he
remind
 you
of
a
lamb?

Updated to add

those loons
 in California
had a contest
 for
ugliest dog in the world

 seriously?
how mean!

well
this is the winner
Wally
 a boxer/beagle/doxie mix

Wally, i think you are far from ugly
odd maybe
but not ugly

what do you think?

step aside

on the platform
 of the eastside subway
 there are
step aside
 signs

 do people heed it?

 they did the afternoon
 i was there

 on the westside
 people huddle
 close to the edge
of the platform
 waiting
the train's arrival
then
they part
 like the red sea
 to
 allow passengers
 to exit
 before
 pushing
 to get on
 before
 the doors
close
riding
 the
new york city subway

 its a trip

water tower

stark?
yes
 to me it feels right
 so very gritty

those two
towers
 tanks
 huddling together
 against the bleak sky
 i suppose this looks
like it was shot in winter
 indeed
it was
 back in january of '12

those dark windows
 are in an office building
 if memory serves
 good luck
with
that
its in the columbus circle area
 west 59th street-ish

i was there yesterday
new dentist is on west 57th
he's a cosmetic dentist
i am so vain
no
well yes i am

but
its not about vanity
so much
 as its about repairing
 the gap
resulting
from
 the dental surgery

before
 the temporary

 after

the finished enamel
will be done in about 3 weeks

makes me dizzy

want a go-getter? come and get him!

Magic is a bit of an overachiever. The four-year-old shepherd mix rocks the agility course, and in play group, he’s the confident big brother — social and totally at ease. In his kennel, he’s polite as can be, waiting patiently and quietly for his turn to go out. Heck, he probably is smarter than a 5th grader. He has it all. Except, of course, a loving home. So his friends at Little Guild of St. Francis, a Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets Network partner, are reaching out to Best Friends members in Connecticut and the surrounding area to find him one.

And boy has he waited. Magic’s been at the shelter over a year, and in that time, has managed to keep a positive disposition thanks to human and canine companionship. But the facility is about to undergo renovations, meaning a major disruption in the activities Magic so enjoys. An active thinker like this dog needs a steady diet of mental and physical exercise.

In fact, Magic is so intelligent, we’re recommending he go to a dog-experienced human. He’ll thrive in a home where boundaries are clear and there’s no question as to who holds the car keys. We seriously wouldn’t be surprised if he already knows the way to the dog park.

So if you’re looking for an agility star, a nose work buddy, a hiking partner, or just an energetic and affectionate pal who gets along with people and pets, we’ve got great news: Magic’s looking for you. Check out a few of his best tricks here.

Has Magic put a spell on you? Please contact Stephanie at (860) 318-5097 orlittleguild.director@gmail.com.

Even if you can’t adopt right now, you can still help spread the word by postingMagic’s flyer anywhere pet-loving people might see it.

toonsday - big bro ...

weekend blather

so how was your weekend?
happy belated father's day to all the dads out there
toonman told me he wasnt my father, really?
 huh
he did speak to both his daughters and our 'son' joseph
the cats on the other hand
 were not very celebratory
harry stole a hunk of cheddar cheese off the kitchen counter
 got cornered
(dummy ran to the bedroom window sill to hide)
 got swatted
 for his misbehavior

not to worry
 the swat wasn't very hard
he was not at all repentant
that nervy boy curled up on toonman's desk chair
 less than 5 minutes
 after
being chased around the apartment

there was the usual amount of beautification™
this week the nails/toes are hot pink

not many photos were taken
i was extremely lazy
i did some reading
finished an excellent
fantasy/time travel novel
the first
 of a series called
 Bright Empire by Stephen Lawhead
The Skin Map
dont let the title put you off
it was quite a good read

then
 i read Carole King's autobiography
Natural Woman
she's led a very interesting life
however
i think
 she could have used
 a better
stronger
 editor
as the second half of the book felt
padded

when i get into reading mode i really devour a book

oh yeah
i have this love of bad movies
i grew up watching 'B' movies
unlike a lot of people i loved
ishtar
the english patient
escape from new york
towering inferno
most recently
 i hoped
 to love
the movie version
 of
 dark shadows
in my opinon
 not even
johnny depp
could save it

i also love animation
we watched
two fun/good movies this weekend via netflix
a monster of paris
totally charming
 fabulously animated
 with great voices
then
 we watched
hansel and gretel witch hunters
it was terrifically bad
so bad
 it was good
 and
 it had
 jeremy renner

hey if you're still here you deserve this as compensation for sitting through all that blather
parc des buttes chaumont

i need to add
 a
 'ps'
to this post
i needed to learn the name of the paris park
 i took that shot in
so i went to my blog list
.. that one over there on the right ...
and
clicked on genie's blog
 got an error message
that i needed an RSS reader
 WTF??????
 i refreshed
 refreshed
 again
 still
the error message appeared
 so
i went and got an RSS app
 no idea
what it does or how it works
 but
i clicked
 nothing happened
 i am now repeating
 i dont understand
i dont understand
 its is my WTF mantra
 sigh
 well
 i still dont know
 WTF
but it seemed to go back to 'normal'
i was able to click/read blogs
 on my list

has anyone else had this WTF moment with blogger?
gah i wish i could kick blogger to the curb

on the street

you know me
 i walk
 i take photos
 i see something
 i capture it
 with
 my iphone

this newspaper kiosk
 yes
 i know
it looks nothing like what you think a kiosk should look like
 but
 that
nevertheless
 is what it is

 it
 sells
newspapers
 magazines
 candy
 gum
 and
there to the left of the man in beige/brown
 is a refrigerated unit
where soft drinks and bottled water are stored
 for sale

this kiosks can be found along broadway on the upper westside
as well as on many streets avenues in manhattan
this one
 is
on the corner of broadway and west 79 street
just outside the entrance to the subway

steve mcqueen

isnt he handsome
only
slightly shorter
than
 his
namesake

remember weeks ago
when i posted
his girlfriend
ali macgraw?

phishing

graffiti spotted on a wall in paris i forget where

no
 its not a typo
 you know what phishing is?

 its a nasty game
 played by thieves
trying to get real info from you
 specifically
credit card or bank info

 this past december
i was gracious enough to purchase two flatscreen televisions for perfect strangers
 that was not phishing
 that was credit card theft

 american express
 cancelled my card
 issued me a new one
 and
 i am going to assume
no one was caught or sent to jail
the names and i assume the addresses phone numbers involved were fake

 well
imagine my susprise
on a quiet thursday afternoon at the office
 when an email arrived
 from american airlines
confirming two tickets from columbia to las vegas round trip

 yes
once again
i am being generous to strangers

 i freaked out
 really i did
 first
 i was panicked
 thinking
 my personal card was compromised
then
 i realized
 my personal cards
are not associated with my business email

i called our corporate travel guy
 gave him all the info
 and
he contacted american airlines

he called me back to tell me
that
when he called american
 asking to verify ticket information
 the first thing
 the american rep said was
let me guess, its for tickets from columbia to las vegas

he said
 how did you know that

she said
there is a big phishing trip happening today
we've been getting calls about this all day

i was asked to forward the email to an american airlines email address
 and
while i was writing this post
 i got a reply
 thanking me
and
reminding me
 never
to
click links on/in suspicious emails

and
 i am reminding you
never
ever
click a link
call the airline
call the store
call
do not
click

 this boat
wasnt
fishing
 in the seine
but
i thought it was sort of apropos

nothing to grouse about

nothing to grouse about
 aside
from the weather

 amazing isnt it

not the weather

that
i have nothing to whine about

i am looking forward to starting my fridaycations
 even tho half day fridays
officially
 began with memorial day weekend
 i had just returned from
 2 weeks of vacation
 it didnt seem right
to take off fridays
 just then

 anyway
my bosses
are all on either
 business trips
 or
vacation
 or
 business trip combined with vacation
 so being here
 in the office
almost all alone
is sort of like a vacation

 listen

 can you hear that?

silence

 its lovely
 no phones ringing
no meetings or conference calls to deal with
 its really lovely

 my office has air conditioning
 something
we havent done at home yet
 okay
so we did get the bedroom air going
 when that nasty heatwave hit
now
 its
well
 damp chilly
 vs
hot humid

 so
 the livingroom air can wait

 what else

oh
this past weekend
 i decided i needed a new bra
i have been shopping at town shop
for as long as i can remember
when i asked for my favorite wacoal bra
i learned i hadnt bought new bra since 2007
which apparently is when they discontinued the style i like best

i get that i am no longer 20
  therefore
 not the target audience
 most bra makers aim for

 i love lacy sexy undies
as much as the next woman
 but
 not
 for all day
 every day

i dont want to be adjusting the straps
 or
the underwire
 because
 they're
digging into my shoulder or ribcage

it took a woman close to my age
 to find me
a new favorite
that
 was
unadorned
 had smooth cups
 thin/narrow straps

i tried on a lot of bras
 i hate trying things on
 oops
 almost a whine there

 in the end
i bought a black and a nude
 that met all my needs
and
didnt cost an arm and a leg

 chantelle
 is my new go-to
 bet me
they discontinue this before i need another

this photo
 reminded me
 of
 a
bra cup

 its actually
the stained glass dome
 of
 galleries lafayette
 in
paris

water tower

i believe
i posted
 another version
 of this tower
a few months ago
 or
 maybe
i posted this one

 my brain is a sieve
its leaking badly

i should be like my friend genie
 and
 write everything down

 now
 where
 did i put
that
paper and pen?

a mostly lovely weekend

it was a mostly lovely weekend
the weather cooperated nicely
 the temps were temperate
 the skies were blue
 with
just the right amount of
fluffy
non threatening clouds
 there was

beautification

 a street fair

 and
 dinner out

 dinner out
 wasnt as great
 as it should have been
due to a not so smart waiter
 its a long story
the short version is
 it took an hour
 from the time we ordered
 to the time
 we ate
 in between
 the waiter
 had all manner of excuses
the worst
 of which
 was saying
 that the order
 was taking longer
due
 to
toonman wanting his steak well done

sigh

toonman did not order his steak well done
even if he had
the waiter using that as an excuse
 was
very wrong
very wrong

the manager came by after toonman refused his meal
 to say sorry

 i am sorry
i didnt tell him
 what the waiter said
 i am even sorrier
that the manager didnt have the smarts
to comp us the entire meal

an hour is an outrageous amount of time to wait for a meal
where none of the items ordered
 were in any way
 requiring special treatment

we wont be going to Calle Ocho again
 and
 thats sad
 because its a nice place
 with good food

 i did get some pleasure
 out of writing a review
 for
 open table
through which we booked the reservation

 as i said
 aside from dinner
 the weekend was lovely

here are some iPhone snaps
i took while walking through the street fair
 none
 of
them
 are signed
i was too lazy

 setting up his stall

 fried pickles
no
 i didnt try them
 my sister tells me
 they're very big down south
 she knows
 because
she watches some food network show

i dont know
 what
 he was selling
but i loved his hair
perhaps
he was selling hair gel

this pup
was
thinking
why are there so many people

 the shish kebab lady
was doing a brisk business
no, i didnt have any

and
 no
i didnt buy any wooden roses
 or
take any wooden nickels

what did you do this weekend?

rent a ride

in paris
 where this was taken
there are many many velib 'stations'
 you rent a bike
 use it for 30 minutes
 drop it off
at any of the 1,800 velib stations in the city
 and
 pick up another
you can do this as many times a day as you like
 but
you only get to use each bike for 30 minutes
 thats not a bad deal
for the sum of 1.70 Euros for the day
 or
you can buy a weekly pass for 8.00 Euros

read all about it here

here in nyc
 a similar a similar program
began recently
 its called citibike
 here
 there's a 45 min limit per bike
but
again
you can drop off/pick up
another
as many times a day as you like for
 $9.95
 for
24 hours
 and
 $25
for
 a
7 day pass

you can read about it here

of course
here in nyc
 there's a lot of controversy

 people are whining
 about the bike stations
 being intrusive,
taking up parking spaces,
people who really dont know how to ride a bike in traffic
and
one thing
i agree with
 there's no 'rule'
that one must wear a bike helmet

 seriously?

people who have no clue how to ride in traffic
 are out there
 without helmets

i predict a lot of head injuries

just sayin'

keri's pup

that's
 keri with the pearls
 her pup
 was with us
when we had drinks in paris
in a cozy little bar
 on the ile st-louis
 with other friends
 of
my friend mary

i am driving myself crazy trying to remember this adorable dog's name
i am sure it will come to me after i hit publish

its Lulu!

and the café/bar we were at is
Lutetia

fellow dogs

on the way up the street
 the other morning
 i had to stop
 to
 read the note
 pinned
 to a tree

it made me laugh out loud
 made me shake my head
 remembering
 all the dog poop
one carefully
steps around
 on the otherwise
 clean
 parisian streets

where dogs are numerous
 allowed in restaurants
 and
shops
where
 few
 if any
are
 cleaned up
after

on the street

the powers that be
are
 digging they must
in
 times square

 its sort of amusing
 in a not
 really
 ha ha
 but
 ironic
 way

 that
what
started

 as a small hole
has grown into

well
into
this

water tower blather

its been horrifically hot here
temps were up in the 90s
 for days
 then
 sunday evening
 it poured
 oh my
 did it ever come down

it was over cast and not much cooler on monday
 tho the sun
 did
actually break through
 in the afternoon

as i was heading home
it started to cloud up again
 after paris
 i am finely tuned
 to looking up
 at
 brooding
 threatening
 skies

as i headed down 80th street
i said a sort of prayer
 hey you up there
 please let me
 get down the block
before the skies
 open up
 rain
 down

i made it with nano seconds to spare
 seriously
 i pushed the door open
 as
 the rain
began

 whew

 toonman insisted
 no fans
 or
air conditioning
 were needed

 after watching
 the killing
a brooding drama set in soggy seattle
 i went to bed
fell asleep quickly
waking near dawn
 freezing
 cold
huddled
under the sheet and cotton blanket
wishing
 for the comforter
i think toonman felt it too
 because
 seconds later
the cozy comforter was covering us both

tuesday was 40 degrees cooler
 than its been
  thankfully
the air conditioning in my office
 is not on full blast
i really dont like the cold air
 at
all

that photo?

 i couldnt resist
 adding my name
 to what was
 then
a blank billboard
at the intersection
 of
west 72nd street
 at the cross roads
 of
broadway and amsterdam avenue

i missed celebrating my sister's birthday here on the blog
she had a major birthday tuesday
 it was a big one
but she doesnt look her age
so i am not going to tell you how old she turned

happy belated birthday little sister!
