le métropolitain

the subway
 in paris
 is
called
le métro
 short for
le métropolitain

you can buy
 a
ticket mobilis or all day pass
or
you can buy single or groups of 10 or 20 tickets

 the entrances
 like the actual cars/trains
 are very different
 different lines
 different train cars

getting
 to the correct
 exit or sortie
 can be a
cardio workout
 after a while
 its not the
 up
thats tough
 its the
down

 occasionally
 one is lucky enough
 to find an
 escalator

 many times
 we encountered
 entertainment
in the form of musicians

the people

  and
their pets

are
 always
 a source
of
 entertainment

 the bulk of my photos
both in and out of the métro
 can be found
 over at

i wanted to share
 3 sneaky snaps
 i took while
 riding
 from here to there

the whole shebang

we did so much in paris in a short time
that a lot of it runs together
in my memory
 add to that
 iphoto
 where i store my pictures
 seems to have mixed order
 i am not sure why
 photos
i took of the eiffel tower
 all on one evening
 are separated/in between
 by photos
 i took earlier that day
i know i wasnt  really paying attention
to where i was all the time
 i knew
 where i was
 but
not the name of the area
i counted on my photos to remind me
 of course
i didnt always take photos of the street signs or metro stops
 nevertheless
i am going to try and share what we did
 in my own vague way
 and
 remind you
 again
to pop over to genie's blog (click here)
where
she not only tells you what you're looking at
she gives you background and how to get there!

okay

after we landed
 cabbed it to the apartment
 literally
dropped our luggage
 and
 headed out
here's what we saw
in no particular order

i think
 after that
we met up with peter
 and
went to a chic shop/restaurant called
 merci

 then it started to rain
 and
all i wanted to do was go home
 i was overtired
having had maybe 2 hours of sleep on the plane
so while mary and genie went to the market
i had a bit of a melt down
i am sure they were thinking
what have we gotten ourselves into with this chick

i did get it together
 and
 after i slept
i was practically fun to be with

sunday
 we met friends
eyad and steve t

at
notre dame

looked around the bird and flower market

 then headed to brunch
after that we made our way to
 montparnesse

 wandered an outdoor art exhibit/sale
 meandered into the
cemetery

 checked out the area

stopped for a bathroom break
 and
had a pick me up at an outdoor cafe

 after getting a second wind
 we headed to the
Parc des Buttes Chaumont

when it began to rain
 we hotfooted it to

Rosa Bonheur
a bar in the park
where we waited it out
before heading out to find somewhere open for dinner

 all
we and the rest of paris
could find open
were
 japanese restaurants

i thought it would be easier to order there
but what a dimbulb i am
trust me
if you cant order food off a french menu
at a french restaurant or cafe
you surely cant do it at a sushi restaurant
 in paris
 i will tell you this
we did not go hungry it

monday was a holiday
 and
 extremely rainy
 we met steve t
at gare l'est the train station

where we caught the train to
provin

that evening
we three had separate plans for dinner
i met steve t and we went to dinner with another former blogger
 rob and his partner gav

 who popped over from london
 - seriously -
 to see me!
we ate at a fabulous restaurant
on the edge of the marais
near
 place des vosges
called
le bonne soeur

tuesday
 was mary's birthday
 we met the
 wonderful
 peter
who took us on a tour of the 16th

he guided us around some amazing places

lunch was had before we headed home to refresh
before meeting
 steve t at
le royal monceau raffles hotel's le bar long

 followed
by a trip
 to the top
 of
 the
  arc de triomphe

rain held off

we all got some wonderful views/photos of paris

dinner was at a thai restaurant
back in le marais
 an area
j'adore
it was once the jewish quarter
now
its winding streets are filled with shops restaurants and bars
in the evenings its also filled with adorable gay couples

wednesday
i was on my own
both mary and genie had plans
so i wandered the marais again
crisscrossing the bridges over the seine
to the ile st louis

 at an appointed hour
we met in the
place des vosges
park

had a latte at a little cafe

before heading off again to wander streets in search of photos ops
here's where i get fuzzy as to where we were

i do know that
thursday

mary and i did a little shopping at bon marche
followed
 by a farewell dinner at
restaurant vivienne
 just across from our apartment

if you're still with me
you deserve these
as a reward

the seine

 the eiffel tower

louvre reflecting pool

all the rest
of my many paris photos
will be over at
through my eyes

chim chim chimneys

there are
 no
 water towers
 water tanks
 on the parisian buildings

 non

they do have a lot of chimneys
 looking up is incredibly lovely

here's an interesting fact i learned
 see the irregular coloration
 of the bricks
on that wall
 i nicely edited for you?

when a chimney is in need of repair
 the
 entire
 exterior
wall
must be ripped open
and
 rebricked
 when the repair is completed

i took that photo our first day in paris
 among other places
 we walked to
 or
took the metro to
 was
 paris' version of the highline
which predates the nyc version
 by about 20 years
 its called
la promenade plantee
or
coulée verte

you can read about it here

sunday brunch american style

its hard to believe
just a week ago yesterday
 i was with my friends
 having sunday brunch
 an american brunch
 at that
in a cafe
called
  lulu'
on the boulevard saint germain in the 5ème

we'd met up with my friend and former blogger
 steve
 aka
 travelingbutnotinlove

 i know
it will seem strange to many
that there i was in paris
a city known for its food
 having an american brunch
 but
you see
my idea
 of spending time in paris
 or anywhere in this world
 is to experience
it like a native of that city
 and
 so we did

we met outside notre dame
wandered through the bird and flower market
 before
heading off to brunch

i will share photos of both notre dame and the birds
another day
 both
here and over
 at
 through my eyes

genie speaks french extremely well
mary gets by
but
i needed
 the
english menu

all the waiters in paris are adorable n'est pas?

oh yesterday
 i mistakenly
 linked
to the wrong blog
for the correct link to genie's blog

this?
it was my brunch
delish!

getting to paris isnt easy

what an amazing trip
tho it didnt start out quite as we planned

 you may recall
the trip to paris in april was cancelled
as my friend mary became ill

when her doctors gave her the go ahead
we planned to fly out on may 14
alas
mother nature
threw us a curve
 incredibly bad weather
 the weekend
before we were to fly
 caused
 many
 many
 flights
 to be cancelled
 getting those paying customers out
 was the airline's priority

         those of us
flying
 on
 buddy passes
 got sent
 to the bottom
 of
 the
standby list

sigh

 which
meant
 the
original 10 days in paris
was
rudely
 cut back to a week

 in the best
make lemonade
tradition
 we opted
 to
embrace
 the attitude that
 a week
in
paris
 is a lot better
than
none

to say it was an incredible week
 is an understatement

 i took so many photos
 i lost count

 i also
lost

 dont ask how
i lost them
i am hoping they can be recovered

an entire days worth of photos
 from a side trip
to
provins
a small city
about 90 minutes outside of paris

sharing the photos
 i do
have
 over
at

after a long flight and very little sleep
i was still in the 'pink'

two of the best people to travel with
my friends
mary and genie
here's a link to genie's blog

'our' apartment window
on the 'second' floor

the stairs
we schlepped
 our bags
 up and down

the tile floors
of the passage we walked
through
palais royale
almost every day

this might be my favorite metro stop
it was very close to the apartment

genie
studies
the
'bible'
 of
 paris what/where/how
on the metro

macarons
are
almost
too pretty to eat
almost

 my favorite
 do not enter
sign

i

ate
ate
but
drank
 little

 dont shoot me
 but
 vin rouge
is
 not
 for
 moi

 the tomatoes
 however
are so good
i will miss them a lot
unlike
 the café

 now
 i love strong coffee
i do
 but
i do not love teensy cups
 i want a
BIG
cuppa
coffee
 ask for
café allongé
you will get
a shot of espresso with water added to stretch it

now
 i have
stretched
 this post
enough
