eating and shopping with friends

my bosses give great gift
okay
 their wives
 give great gifts

this christmas
 one
 gave me
 an amazingly gorgeous

 celine tote bag
 the leather was so soft
when you put it over your shoulder
the whole thing collapsed into itself
had the shoulder strap
been a teensy bit longer
i might have kept it

i took it back to the store
 got a credit
 oh boy
what a credit

i have since getting the credit
 mostly hibernated
due to the weather

but it was
beginning to burn a hole in my wallet

what to do?

 i called
two of my best gal pals
 organized
 an afternoon
 of
lunch and shopping

 on the way to
bergdorf goodman
 donna asked
if i had made a reservation
 well no
but i can do it now

i fumble
with my iPhone open table app
the earliest table for 3
 is 2:30
 its now
just a little past 1

 ironically
 it took me
 until the cab pulled up
 across from bg
 to make the reservation

 we decide
to just go up to the 7th floor
see if we can
get a table sooner
 if not
we'd shop

 amazingly
was able to seat us immediately

if you've ever dined
at fred's in barney's
 the comparison
 is
 the menu
 at fred's is larger/more diverse
 but
 the ambiance
 at
bg
 wins
 with
 its view of Central Park
 and
 its cozy
 'trader vic' chairs

after
a lunch of
scallops and mushroom ravioli for me
 deviled eggs for donna
 and
lovely salmon for cheryl

we order
 'cookies for the table'
and coffee

fortified
we go shopping
they were having 75% off sales
however
 i managed
 to find

sold design lab brown faux leather skinny jeans

rag & bone forest green skinny jeans

nili lotan cashmere boyfriend sweater in cobalt
none
 of which
were on sale

still came away
 with
 half the credit
 left for another day

water towers and art

on the way to the framers
looking up
on
Columbus Avenue

here
 it is
the mirror
repaired

the holes were filled
the art restorer matched the color of the 'hood'
unless you hold it under a light
you can't see where the damage was
bravo

hung on the wall

funny?

so
Toonman and i
 are talking
 stuff
 you know

 somehow
 we got into
 what's funny

 somehow
 was
him
 saying
he's trying to come up with a toon
 me offering up scenarios
morphed
 into
 him
 telling
 me
about someone we know
 who
moved into an apartment
 in a
high
 high
 high rise

 Toonman
 saying
 how he cant handle
even
 being near windows
 46 floors up

 his friend
 telling
 him
 it also has a terrace

Toonman
 put the kibosh on that
no way
 would he
go out
on a terrace that high

 friend said
 yeah
a cat actually fell off a terrace two floors below

 i interject
 i suspect
the friend's son
who tried to help rescue the cat
 probably
 scared it
 making it fall

 Toonman doesnt think it matters

i say
there's another toon idea

 he says its not funny
a cat falling off a high rise terrace
 isn't funny

 i look at him
 i say
 when
 did the man
 who
 in another creative life
 co-wrote
 a skit called
 'television for the blind'
stop finding dark humor funny

 he paused
 considered it
saying
 the idea is funny
 til you know
 that a cat
 actually
 fell

 i say
well, there you go, another toon idea

 then
 i got up
 walked over to my computer
 and
 wrote this post

do you find humor in things
which in reality make you uncomfortable?
do you 'get' dark humor?

this and that

 yes
its still insanely cold

 yes
 i know its winter

 knowing its winter
 does not
 in anyway
 relieve
 the cold
 that makes
 my nose run
 my eyes tear
my ears ache

 i hate hats
 actually
 i love hats
 on
 other people
 or
 in shops

i love the concept of a hat
 i buy hats

rarely do i wear them

 this week
 i wore a hat
every
day

 hat hair
 hat head
was
the result
 flattened
was the look

 somewhere
 i have ear muffs
 somewhere
 now i am hearing
'there's a place for us ... '
sigh

when i was last in Cincinnati
my friends
Mary, Phil and i
had a lovely lunch

this photo was taken in October 2011

with
the divine Ms Alice Balterman and her daughter, Meg

Alice is 92 and going strong
an incredible artist
i am lucky enough to own several of her pieces

she made this one especially for me

at the time
i also got another of her decoupage mirrors

after weeks
 of forgetting
to bring it to the framer
last weekend
 i finally brought it in

 its a simple thing
 they put
  two screws and a wire
 across the mirror side

i hang them on the wall like this

framer asked
can you come back in half an hour?

no, but i will come by tomorrow

of course

 Sunday
i forgot

Monday
they called

long story short
they made a 'mistake'
they put the screws and wire
on
 the
front

i was so upset
i was so upset

but
i only dropped the f-bomb once
i said
 i cannot fucking believe this

no
 i did
not
apologize

we agreed they would try to fix it
i would come by on Saturday
to see what it looked like

when i got there
 a full almost week later
they had removed only
the screws
 the holes
remained

not
only
 did they put
the holes and wire
over
across
 the
art
they did it
vertically

a good thing!

a good thing?

yes

it was supposed
 to be
horizontal

like
 the center mirror
 in that photo up there

so
while
there are two large holes
they do not actually affect the art

the framer said
they can fill in the holes

 they have an art restorer
 who will match the paint

i am less insanely upset now
but
just slightly

GAH

waiting for a treat

many moons ago
 i met
 this
 handsome rescue
 in
 a pet food supply store
 in
 Manayunk PA
 there were
 samples
of
 treats being offered
 he was focused on them

can you see his mind working
pleasegimmesome

look, up in the sky, its ...

the moon

stopped at tourneau
last night
 to pick up
 my just repaired
  time piece

it took
forflippinever
 to write up the charge
 confusion
 likely due
 to
 having to figure out
 how to deduct
 the cost
 of the battery/cleaning
 i paid for
 in May
 from
 the cost of repairing
my
 25+ year old Concord Saratoga
 time piece

love
 calling it
 a
 time piece

it was hot in the store
by the time
she returned
 with my receipt and warranty
i had practically undressed
peeling off
layers
 worn for the frigid temps

she said
put this somewhere safe

 i thought
 i should tell her
i will put them with my stock certificates
 but
she wouldnt get the 'joke'
(i dont have the physical stock certificates for the very real stock i own)

as
 i exited
 the shop
i looked
up

yup
a not quite full moon

yup
no camera

yup
pulled off my glove

whipped out the iPhone

snap

gotchya!

no fotos please!

did you know
 gastronomy
 is the term
 for
 the art of food eating?

i googled
 to learn
 the/a term
 for
 food photography
there's none
yet

do you take photos of your food
 when you are dining out?
i do
i often say:
wait!
hold
 your
 fork/spoon
 right there
SNAP
 ok
now you can eat

i was snapping dishes
long before Instragram
long before it was 'a thing'
my little old Olympus Stylus point and shoot
actually had a food setting
worked a lot better than the macro setting
didnt need a flash

i rarely shlep my BIG camera with me
when i am going out to eat
 unless
 of course
i am out with the BIG camera
 even then
if i am to be honest
 i pull out the iPhone
 to take my food pix

 Hipstagram
has a
Foodie SnapPak
 consisting
of
DC Film
Loftus Lens

but
 even using
 Instragram's 'lens'
 or
ProCamera app
 or
Alt Photo app
 or
even
 gasp
choke
 the actual
 iPhone camera app
will get you good food pix

what inspired this post?
an article
 in the
 Wednesday NY Times Dining section
'Restaurants Turn Camera Shy'

huh?

well
it seems
 that
diners snapping food fotos
are annoying other diners
with the flash from their cameras

 seriously?

if you dine at a David Bouley restaurant
 and
pull out your camera
 expect
 to be invited
 into the kitchen
 i kid you not
  to shoot
 'as the plates come out'

'that shot will look so much better on the marble table in our kitchen'
according to Chef Bouley himself

Don't try snapping
 your
 foie gras
 at
Ko
 apparently
Chef Chang does not allow photos!
you can read about it here

i doubt
i will ever eat at Ko

did you know
 you can take a class
 in
iPhone food photography?
yup

here
are some of
my
 recent gastronomic photos
nope
never took a photo class
i guess i am just
an
idiot savant
or
maybe just
a
crazed food foto idiot

 beat salad at

dessert
at
yellow springs, ohio

occasionally
i 'art direct' my food shots
in this case
the anchovies
i asked to be omitted from my salad
 pose
along with an olive
 forming
 a
 food heart
yeah
i know

i shouldn't play with my food

do you?

water towers

you know
 i love to look up
 its how
 i came to notice
 all
 the water tanks
 water towers
that
dot the skyline

 a water tower
 silhouetted
against
 a mashed potato sky
 shot
through
naked tree branches
 for me
 is the
 perfect
 the ultimate
 photograph

 and

 if you look closely
 you will see
there are
two towers
 in this shot

 and

 for once
 whilst
 using the iPhone 4's
 pitiful
 4 'megapixel' camera
i did not
 wish
i had
zoom

 i know ca-zazy!

you looking at me?

yes
 i was

another busy weekend

friends in from los angeles
mani/pedis
a flea market wander
helping our friend wendy's husband sort things out
a wonderful dinner
put off eating better
even had a beer

and
you?
how was your weekend?

waiting outside Irving Farms

so very intently
 watching
 the door
 waiting
 for his person/people

i did get him to look at me .. what a sweetie

speaking of sweet
thank you all so much
 for
 the kind words
 the empathy
 the sympathy

 it is much appreciated

Wendy loved food
 after a trip anywhere
(she traveled a lot with her husband a musician)
 she would send
long
emails
 detailing
 every meal
 not just what she ate
 what everyone ate

 at some point
she bought a small camera
 adding photos
 to the drool inducing descriptions

 she complained
 she
(a film/video editor)
could not
 put the photos
exactly
where she wanted them

 i suggested a blog
it was going to be called
 west side wendy
 chronicling
 all things upper westside
 and
 allow her
to share her
travel
recaps
 and
food photos

it never got off the drawing board
 but
she read and encouraged my blog

 well
at the time of this writing
 there've been
 315 views
 more than any other post
i ever published

 i imagine
 her
 reaction

widened eyes
 raised eyebrows
 and
 a big smile

sweet

no more

dont they look great?
 cheese biscuits with jalepeno
real butter

these were et at Ditch Plains
 but
 the ones
 i truly adore
 are the ones
 i get at Irving Farm

flakey fluffy cheddar cheese biscuits

cheesy biscuits
yum

no more

nope

never again
 will a cheesy biscuit
 or
 any other
saturated fat
bad
 fat
 food
 pass these lips

i have been scolded by my doctor
my cholesterol is higher than its been in forever
i am already on lipitor
have been for a long long time

my cholesterol issues are hereditary/genetic

i used to exercise 45 minutes a day 5 days a week
now i am a couch potato
possibly one with cheddar cheese on top

i dont eat red meat

i dont eat cheese,
generally speaking
dont eat much dairy

 yes

 i do eat ice cream
 not that much

so
after some discussion
it was agreed
no
 more
 cheesy biscuits
no
 more
 mixed berry scones
no
 more
 cookies

blood work will be redone in a month
if my numbers are better
 maybe
an occasional treat
would be permitted

maybe
 a cheesy biscuit

show of hands

quit google+ again
not sure why

words with friends crashed my iPad
several times

loved those hands
fishs eddy

so many things
i really
 dont need
so many things
 i want
anyway

and you?

water towers etc

can you make out
 the ghost sign
on the building
behind
the water tank

below
to the right
of
the Empire State Building?

 The American Book Bindery Building

 don't lean in too far
you'll smash your nose
 into the computer screen

 i only noticed it
when
 i was trying
 to balance the contrast

 the actual building
 is on 30th and 9th
the ESB
is on Fifth and 34th

 i believe
 i took this shot
 from
The High Line
it stretches from
12th to 30th

contrasts

it was a weekend in need of lightening up
Toonman offered me several options
i chose
Ice Age Continental Drift
aka Ice Age 4
animation
cute prehistoric critters

who knew something so lightweight could be so anxiety producing?

families separated
 ice melting
 land masses crumbling
evil pirate monkeys on ice berg 'ships'
oh my

i am thinking next time i will opt for a musical

derailed

not signed dont strain your eyes

on a wall
Riverside Tower hotel
 Riverside Drive

 i had this whole riff
 about towers

'physical' entrance
not
on
 Riverside Drive

 til
 i
 Googled
 the actual address

then
 it turned into
 a
 big
 never mind

 80
 actually
 is
signage
its not
 just
a number
 picked at
random
 stuck
 on a wall

still
 its odd
 okay
its even
 but
 its
weird
no, not weird
more
um, look
 a number
 on the building
 on the corner
 of

 wait

 here it comes

 80th Street

 too easy

the train has left the station

this cat is also waiting

she's waiting
 for a special forever home
.. sweet girl has trust issues ..
please
help
by passing along her info
even if you cant help,
maybe
someone else who reads about her
can

waiting

i am
99.99%
 sure
 i havent posted this guy
 yet

look at that look he gave me

oh the weather outside ...

on the way from Yellow Springs to Cincinnati

oh the weather
 if you don't like it
wait a minute or two it will change

 here
it has been unseasonably
 mild
 i am not
complaining
 my office is always
cold
when i don't have to wear
a shawl
 a scarf
 or
 lap robe
i am happy

i am not kidding
 one day
 a month or two back
 it was so cold
how cold was it
it was so cold
i had a blanket on my lap
 i was told
 it looked
as if
i was in an old age home
 personally
 i likened it
to being in a deck chair
 on the Titanic

 but
 i digress

between Christmas and New Year
it was blustery
it didnt snow
 it rained
the winds were icy

 odd
 because
 it rains vs snowing
 depending on the temperature

 i have learned
that when its been very cold
 then feels a bit warmer
its going to snow

rain comes with even warmer temps
 like the day
i took that photo of the barn
 the naked limbs
 of that tree
 are
 decorated with rain drops
 it was wet
it was misting
 i took that shot
 sitting in the car
 through the open window
 hey
i wasn't about to get my camera wet
never mind my hair

if i want to hear about warm climes
i go visit my friend Gracie
who is having a hot hot summer
at the end of the world
 in Perth
a place i would love to visit in real life

 in the meantime
 i get my fix
 of parrots and roos
from Gracie
 you should too

three pears

i forgot
all about
this post
waiting patiently
 for me
 to write words
 to accompany it

often
when its quiet here at the office
 in the late afternoons
 i will write my posts
 or
 at least
choose a photo
 that
 i hope
 will prompt me
 to write

 yesterday
was such a day
 quiet
with no one around to interrupt the muse
 so what happened?

 i don't know
 i don't remember
 i do remember
 as
 i headed home
 that
 i hadn't written
hadn't set the post to publish
 i would do it
i resolved
when i got home

 when i did get home
 Toonman and i
 got involved
in something
 then
 the news was on
then the night before Daily Show
 then
 well
bottom line
 i woke
around 2ish
 thinking
did i set that to publish at midnight without writing anything
 will my devoted readers
 lurkers
 think
i went
Wordless on Thursday
 or
 did i not do anything
 at all

no

i didnt get up to find out
 if that ever happens
 i will for sure know
i have lost it

speaking of lost

yesterday
i wore a pair of earrings
 i rarely wear
 a pair of hearts
 that dangle
a gift from my friend Wendy
 i wore them
 to feel close to her
 its something i do
 i know
i am weird

 anyway
when i got to the subway
last night
 i realized
they were not dangling from my lobes
i also realized
 that backtracking
 - once before this happen, i back tracked and found the lost earring -
wasn't going to work
 i had no idea
when
they went missing

 i know
 exactly
 how
 it happened
 even tho i don't know
 when

i didnt put those little stopper things on the back wire
i was wearing my zip up to the chin coat
 with
 a scarf around my neck

 its likely
 the combo
 caught the back wire
 enabling them to escape

 i really needed a hug
 when i got home
in fact
that
 hug
 and
 the following conversation
 they're responsible
 for me forgetting to write
had that not happened
 who knows
what drivel i would have shared

three pears
 i have no idea
if its a good wine or not
 i only know labels
 like signs
are like a magnet
 they pull me in
make me
aim and shoot
 and
of course
share

ripples

spring grove cemetery and arboretum cincinnati ohio

every action has a reaction
thank you for understanding my mood
 for those who read it
 it likely wont happen again

 thank you
 too
to
 those
 who told me
they'd miss
 My Eyes

 you have helped me
 off the fence

no sooner
than
 i said it out loud
 i realized
i would miss it
  immediately
 the idea was re-considered

 doing something
 like deleting it

 way too harsh

 unlike soap characters
 dead blogs
 do not return to life

 so
 maybe
 a once a week thing
 maybe
whenever i have a photo to share

 then
 of course
 it was clear
 i wasnt pulling the plug

 see ripples
 your actions have reactions
