a cat tale

we adopted Harry
 on
 October 21st
he fit right in
 he and Jack are pals
 they run our lives
Harry seemed like a normal cat
then
one evening a few weeks ago
I put a cheesy biscuit wrapped in wax paper
inside a ziplock bag
 in my tote bag

 in the morning
 I found it
 on the livingroom floor
 slightly
 gnawed

 a day or so later
a loaf of bread
 on the kitchen counter
suffered a ripped bag
 there were several other
 food attacks
 but
 the day after Thanksgiving
 when Harry
 snuck
 a mouthful
 of
hot mashed potatoes and bread stuffing/dressing
 and
 started to choke
 I decided
 we had to do something
 about
 this weird attraction
 Harry has with bread
 and
the contents of the garbage can

we don't leave any food unattended

Harry once ate a piece of a cookie
still
 inside
 its wax paper bag
 when Toonman turned his back

Wednesday night
 I said
 it was amazing
 that
Harry hadnt discovered
 the Thomas English Muffins
 on top of the fridge

Thursday afternoon
 Toonman called me
to tell me
Harry found the English Muffins

we commiserated
about how this is so weird
how there had to be a reason
we needed to find a fix
 we keep the bread
English Muffins
in the oven
buy a bread box

 we keep all food leftovers
 in the fridge
 whether they need refrigeration
 or not

I was telling this to Hilary
 and
she
 welcomed
 me
 to
her world
sharing her cats' antics

 it seems
 Harry
 is totally normal

it was all our other cats
 who never ate bread
never tried to get into the garbage
never tried to steal food off our plates
 or
 even
 touch
any of the many tschkas in our apartment
those cats
were
the
weird
ones

 go figure!

three

I see things in threes
 I am honestly
 not even aware
 that I do

 however
 this time
 in this instance
 I was very aware

 there were two birds
 sitting on that wall
 there were
 several other birds
 foraging
 on the ground
 below

 I waited
 I knew
 another bird
 was going
 to
 hop
up
 on the wall

 hop
into
 the frame
 so
 I waited

I didnt have to wait long

water towers

another iPhone shot
looking up
 shadows
 old and newer
 architectural
 designs
 and
a
 water tank/tower

I did a lot of reading
 this past weekend
 partially
 as a defense
 against
 the non stop football
 Toonman
 watches

 yet
it was a lovely escape into fantasy
 into the past

 when I was a kid
 The Aunt
 my dad's sister
 who I was close to
 was a great reader
 one of her guilty pleasures
 was
Georgette Heyer novels

 do you know Georgette Heyer?
 Click
  here
to read about her

 she wrote romance novels
 set in the Regency era
 in London
 a time of manners
 the time of Jane Austin
 they were
 easy
 escapist
reading
 The Aunt
 loved those books
 so much
 when she passed
 her daughter-in-law
 put
one of The Aunt's favorite Heyer novels into The Aunt's casket
we also did something
 others
will find insane

we poured a cup of hot black coffee
 over the closed casket
 The Aunt
loved
 her
 coffee hot and black

it made all of us smile

I didnt read any Heyer this past weekend
 I read
 a series 3 books
 by Anna Godbersen

they were a little more risqué
than Heyer's books
 not quite Shades of Grey
 but
 for sure
 less innocent
 then
the originals

anyway
they were a quick fun read
if you want to escape
 into
 New York in 1899
 this is your ticket!

this and that

aren't these Santa ornaments adorable?
they're handmade
by
Tammy Morehouse
a friend/neighbor of
Hilary
at
Crazy As A Loom

Tammy is in the process of setting up an Etsy shop
but
I contacted her through Hilary
you can too

Moving along with this and that
here are the fabulous
purple
cashmere
gloves
I know, in this light they look sort of
Mulberry
Violet
a weird hot pink
but
they're
purple
or as my dad would say
Burple!

and
here's a photo of my boo boo

its actually
 over a week old
 that photo

 the redness
 has
 lessened considerably

that adorable pixie
 with me
 is my 'niece' Laura
 someday
 you'll see her on Broadway
 in a show
 but
 this past weekend
she was on Broadway with me and her Moms
as we walked off a wonderful lunch

while
walking
 we saw this woman
 sitting on a
 'boulder'
painting
its actually
 a traffic 'thing'
I don't know the proper terminology
what it does
is keep the cars a away
 from the traffic island
see there's one on the other side

that's it
 sorry
not
 to have
more better stuff
 this Monday

it was a long long weekend
I did a lot
I ate a lot
I walked a lot
 but
 now
its back to work
 Monday
so I gotta get going!

  How was your weekend?
Did you shop like mad on Black Friday?
Are you planning on shopping online today?
Come on tell me all about it!

waiting

This man and his dog
 were
walking along Broadway
 they paused
waiting
 for the light to change
 when
 I decided
to snap this shot

How's your weekend going?

Did you do any shopping on Black Friday?

I've been home since Wednesday
 have to admit
waking up this morning
I wasnt sure what day it was

Thanksgiving weekend here at Casa Edelstein
 every year
 turns into
 catch up weekend
with good friends
 who live out of town
 friends
I dont get to see very often

Thanksgiving is a family event
my out of town friends
 come to
NYC
 to
visit/have dinner
 with their families

 being considered
 part of their extended families
 we
 visit and eat together
too

lunch is usually the meal shared
 followed by long walks
 to
well
walk off
 the
extra calories

Friday
 my friends
Maureen and Joanne
 their daughter Laura
 and I
went to lunch
 then
 we window shopped
 our way
 down
 to
Lincoln Center
and
back

today
 I meet my friend Cheryl
yup
for lunch

tomorrow
diet!

apres the déluge

seriously
 herself hasnt stopped eating
 since
her friend Mary
 got here
 and
 they went to lunch

then this morning
 she unpacked all these containers
 put
lots of good smelling stuff into other containers
 into the oven
 oh boy
 did that ever smell good

she put some stuff
 in the microwave
I got chased out of the kitchen
 lots

the smells of that food cooking
was
yum

then
herself got a little upset
 she didnt have anything
 to put that turkey in
no
 one
 else
 seemed to care

Harry and me
 we kept close
 to the table
 never saw such neat eaters
 not a morsel dropped
 no one offered us anything
the SILESQ said she never had such good turkey
herself said this year she didnt have a melt down
himself thought it was all good

they all said they were stuffed

I dont understand that
 stuffed

maybe
 if they'd shared
 with Harry and me

wait

now
 the
SILESQ says
she's going to leave soon
so
 she offers pie

Harry said he just cant watch

cause
she said she's going to
explode!

thank you, Hilary!

happy thanksgiving

I dont cook
 okay
 so I occasionally
 make pancakes
 went through
a baked turkey meatball phase

 way back when
 I used to
 cook
 bake
 make bread

 we had
 an even smaller kitchen
 back then
 now
 I dont cook
 I re-heat food
 which is what
 I will be doing today

 all those containers
 hold
 our pre-cooked
 ready for me
 to hot up

 see that pink paper
 its instructions
 on how long
 each food
 needs to be warmed
 in the oven
 we gotchya
 turkey breast
two kinds of stuffing/dressing
 two veggies
 turkey gravy
 jalapeño cornbread
 two kinds of potatoes
 cherry pie
 pumpkin pie
 a nice Malbec

I think there will be leftovers
I hope there will be leftovers

when we say thanks
 we will mean it
 and
not just for the food
 but
 for each other

 wishing
 you and yours
 a very happy thanksgiving

I am thankful for you too!

water towers

walking
to the Farmer's Market two Sundays ago
I walked across West 78th Street
 it is in my opinion
 one of the prettiest streets
 on the UWS
see
 that water tower?
 see
 that sky?
 its green
because of the 'film' and 'lens' combo of the Hipstamatic app
 I was using
 but
waaaay
 back
 when
I attended the High School of Art and Design
 I had a teacher
who assigned us the task of painting a cityscape
 we could paint from memory
 or
we could look out the window and paint what we saw
  I opted for memory

 I gesso'd/primed
 the canvas
with a color green
not unlike the color of the sky
 in this photo
 and
 then
painted in
 the stark greys
 of the urban landscape
 the high rises
 the office towers
 but
 in my mind
in the world of my painting
 there was a rainy feel
to me the sky needed to be green
my teacher
stopped at my desk to see how my painting was progressing

when, he asked, did you ever see a green sky?
  I tried to explain
 about
how the sky looks to me
when
 the color of light
 takes on
that just rained look

 he said
there's no such thing as a green sky
 repaint it

 I refused

he told me
he would be speaking to the dean
  he did
 and
 the dean called my mother
when my dad came home that evening
she told him
he was going in to speak to the dean
she had gone to school every year up to that point
 but she wasn't going again
she expected him to handle it

  yes
 I was a troublesome student
I am sure you are all surprised

not

   anyway
 dad met with the dean
 they agreed
while there are not green skies
 the teacher was wrong
to impose his views on a student
 after all
aren't we supposed to be artists
learning
expressing
 our visions?

  I was also told
that I wasn't to talk back
I am not sure how long that lasted
but
I can tell you
 neither of my parents
were ever called into school after that

I am still able to see the color of light differently

now you can see it too

look, its fall foliage!

I know
 all that whining
about no fall foliage
 and
 there it is

 Apparently
 we chose the day
that the trees in Riverside Park
 those
 that weren't de-branched or uprooted
by Sandy
 were
 going
 to
POP!

We did a variation on Toonman's long loop on Saturday afternoon
 swinging down
around Mrs Roosevelt's statue
down the stairs to the river
back uptown
 then
up the long hill
 vs
 the stairs
 to the Promenade
 everywhere
 we walked
the trees were showing their colors

  Saturday was the better day
 in that
Sunday
 Toonman
 became one
with the BIG TV and FOOTBALL
 not
 that
 he hadn't watched
 every college game on Saturday

We watched a wonderful movie on Saturday while football was being recorded
Wes Anderson's Moonlight Kingdom
 its Wes Anderson
 so its quirky
 its Wes Anderson
 so its filled
 with wonderful character actors
 like
Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Bob Balaban, Harvey Keitel
and
 the true stars
 Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward

Got it on DVD from NetFlix
highly recommend it

 While
Toonman watched football on Sunday
 I read
I have been reading a lot lately
 I love to read
 but occasionally
I get into a reading slump
 not so this weekend

I finished Elly Griffiths' first book,
The Crossing Places,
 a very promising series
about a forensic archeologist
in Norfolk on the coast of England
 it was so good
 I started the second
 The Janus Stone
if you are into mystery with a twist check them out

What else?

 Thanksgiving is looming
 this year
 in place of
the take out from Indian or Italian or Thai restaurants
 I ordered a traditional dinner:
Turkey, 2 kinds of stuffing, 2 kinds of potatoes, veggies
and
 cherry pie for dessert
  everything is pre-cooked
 I get to go mad
trying to time it all out
to be hot at the same time

What are your plans for Thanksgiving?

  Okay.
 Its a short week
 which means
it will be busy
 so I gotta get going
 catch you later!

construction zone

a somewhat late
 start
 this day

 I was thinking
 always a dangerous thing
 about
 having
 two blogs
(you didnt know I had two blogs?)

 Why
couldnt I
 just
combine
them

aside from photos taken while traveling
all
my
 photos
are
taken
 here
 in
New York

 so
I wouldnt have to drop out of the City Daily Photo group

Toonsday
 would
still
 be
 Toonsday

 I think
 I am liking
 writing
 more
 as the posts go
 by

 but
 sleeping on it
 didnt work

 I dreamt
 of
 other things
 like
getting my hair washed and dried
going to Trader Joe's early this morning
 and
 of course
still making it to my beautification appointment
 on time
 I hate being late

 so that said
 I gotta get moving here
 lots to do
 maybe
 even
 another walk

 yesterday
we did a variation on the long loop
 it was lovely out
 today
 is supposed
 to be the same

so see ya later!

waiting

this very funny little bull dog
was in the dog run
at 84th Street in Riverside Park
 this past Saturday
when
Toonman and I took
our walk
first
he followed a dog and its person
to the gate

then
after
 he said goodbye
 he raced
 over
to see
what that spaniel and the beagle
 were up to
 he seemed
like the
mayor of the run

speaking of hands

nope
 its not a tattoo
 its a boo boo
You know I am a klutz, right?
 Well
there was a spill in the office pantry
 someone in a hurry
dropped a 'bowl' of cereal
 dry cereal
 I said
 go go go
 I'll get it
 I've got a dust buster!
(I believe the ! is included)

  Thing is
 I have
 a
 dustbuster!
 but
 I had never used it

 its easy enough
 you turn it on
 it sucks up the spill

 except
 it got full fast
apparently
 the last person
 to use it
 didnt empty it

so
 I open it
dump out the cereal
 and
 the other crap
 its inhaled

 put it back together

 ummm

why isn't this going to close
 let me force it
 because we all know
 forcing things
 always works out so well

OUCH
 YIKES
 HOLY MACARONI

 yeah yeah

we all know
I never said that
 I went

JEEEEZECHRISTWHATHEFUCK

 I bled
I bled
 a lot
 sigh
cleaned it up with alcohol swabs antibiotic cream and a big bandaid
 then
 I figured out
 why the damn thing
wouldn't go back together
 it seems
you have to put the innards
 back facing a certain way
 in order
for the two parts to close

GAH

That horrible gash on my hand
is actually improving
you shoulda seen it before

  before what?

 Oh
 before
 the
 magic salve
helped it

J.R. Watkins makes this amazing hand and cuticle salve
this is the Aloe and Green Tea version
(it really is THE best hand/cuticle salve out there)

I got it at Birchbox
 actually
 that's the sample size
 I belong to Birchbox
every month
 they send samples
 many of them
 I pass along
 this one I kept
and
because its such a great product
I bought a full size version
 which is at home
the sample I keep at the office
so I can apply it
as often as I notice
its dry or feels itchy
 don't want to pick it
don't want that scab to come off
 before its healed

likely there'll be a scar
but
 I am hoping
 that the salve
 helps keep
 it from being
 too awful a scar

of course
I could always pretend its a tattoo

No one paid me for pimping either J.R. Watkins Salve or Birchbox

three

Portolano had a sample sale last week
 they'll have another
at the beginning of December
 if anyone is interested

 I took an early lunch
walked to their office/warehouse/sale site
on a brisk sunny late morning last week

yes
I got two pair of cashmere gloves
 at a delightful discount

 purple
 both pair

 yes
I go to their sale every year

 yes
 every year
I buy more gloves pashminas and occasionally gifts

 I have
Raynaud's Syndrome
 sometimes called Raynaud's Disease
 frankly
 'disease'
seems
 a misnomer

 I've had it
for
years and years

 it gets worse
 as I get older

used to be
only a few fingers
on one hand
reacted
 to the cold

 now
 its both hands
 and
 my feet

 I am lucky

 lucky
 to have a 'disease'
 a syndrome
 that worsens?

  Yes

 Why?

 Because
 many
 who have this
feel tremendous pain
 when the circulation
 returns
to their
white weird looking fingers

I don't
so
 I consider
 myself
lucky

 Gloves don't stop it
likely
they make no difference
 but
I wear gloves
 beginning in the fall
through
the winter

What's all that have to do with this photo?

on the way back from Portolano
 I was waiting
 for the light
the red hand
(reminded me of how red my fingers turn after the blood returns)
 to turn green

 I looked up
 and
took an iPhone photo
now
I'm
 sharing it
with
you

water towers

I wish
 the shadows
weren't so deep
or
that
I could have figured
 out a way
 to even out
 the contrast
so you could see
the fire house with its flag there
 but
I couldn't
I tried
 I tried
 then
 I gave up
 I got over it
 you will too

 this is
 West 78th Street
 just before
 Amsterdam Avenue

numbers

Must
have walked past
 this
 many times
 never noticed
 the mask decals
 surely
 there's a better descriptive
 in architecture
 than
decal
 in any event
 they
 and
 the numbers
 denoting
 the building's address
 look well maintained
 with an edge of old
 to them

 I've been
 eyeing numbers
 for a while

 I tried
 not
 to find
 yet
another
'theme'
 to photograph
and
yet
I have

How was your weekend?
You've already heard about most of mine
Sunday
I beautified™
went to the Farmer's Market
 got
7 honey crisp apples
 ate one already
 the rest
will be devoured
one
a
 day
 next week

 hey
 an apple a day
means
no candy bar
 at
3 pm

 I'm telling you

Made pancakes
I now use a smaller bowl
a ladle
 and
 make
 BIG
ones
one
at
time

 after they are eaten
I think
 I wish
 I had
doubled
 the recipe
then
the waist band
 on my jeans
 makes
 itself
 known

Finished
a good escapist fantasy novel
Patricia Briggs'
Moon Called
 first
in a series
 about
shape changers and werewolves

 Do you know

She has a book review blog
I find a lot of new eBook
 good reads
based
on her reviews check
 her out

have a good week

busy busy busy

busy
busy
busy

Saturday

first stop

The Eyeman
picked up my
 new glasses
they're a smile-y shape
top layer is brown/tortoise shell
middle layer is
heliotrope-ish blue
back/under is brown/tortoise

next
Super Runners Shop
to buy
new 'sneakers'
not running
not jogging
just inexpensive
'sneakers'

salesman said
 I had
 a
choice of colors

turned out
 they only had
 my size
 in
one
 color
so
I bought a pair of turquoise laces

next up
Zabars
waiting at the prepared food counter

a gentleman
 standing next to me
was showing off
the fishing lures
 pinned to his cap
 he was telling
 the counterman
 how he makes them
sells them
 to women
 who wear them as pins
 of course
 I admired them
 he took off his cap
 to show them
 to me

 I said
 they're fabulous
 he took off one
handed it to me

 I said its wonderful
went to hand it back

 he said
 no, its yours

 I thanked him
asking
 how much I owed him
 he said
 its a gift
 I thanked him again
saying how very nice it was
 how incredibly nice
 he smiled
 tipped his hat

and
Toonman and I
 took a walk
 in
Riverside Park

I had been told by Susan,
who reads my blog and lives a little further uptown,
the park took a very hard hit from Sandy

she
 did
not
exaggerate

  of course

 in comparison

 to the devastation
that is along the shore of NJ LI and SI

the damage to the park is small

 but
to me

it was overwhelming
 to see
 trees uprooted

 trees
 the winds
ravaged

 the piles
 of
sawed limbs
brush

are
everywhere

 the squirrels
seem as if
they're confused
 their favorite
 nesting places
 are no more

while taking photos of a downed tree
 a man standing nearby
 pointed up
 look a white tail hawk
 a young one
 not very large

 immediately
 I was kicking myself
 for
not taking along
the
 BIG
lens

 when he pointed out
 the rat
 the hawk
was munching on

I wasnt
so
disappointed
 to
only
have
the
18-105 kit lens

you're welcome
