trick or treat?

a friend
 who loves Halloween
 as much as I do
 sent me
 that card
 its so cute
 I had to share it

my plans for Halloween
did not include
being in NYC

 I was heading
 to Cincinnati
to visit
my friend Mary
her husband
 and
their little black cat
Enzo

 Sandy
interfered
caused
LaGuardia Airport
 to be
 flooded

(foto stolen from Google)

Sandy
had a lot of tricks
in store for this coast

many many many
people
in both
NJ and CT
are
without power
are
pumping out
flooded
homes
businesses

these are not nice tricks

along Riverside Drive
just at 80th St
this tree lost its head

this backhoe was there to help clean it up

since
Sunday at 7 p.m.
the subways have been shut down

due to flooding in the tunnels
they remain shut

at
midday
 Tuesday
 the buses were back
with limited service
 and
 no fare is being charged

 by this morning
(Wednesday)
 all
bus service
 in the city
was
restored

as of this writing
(Tuesday afternoon)
I am not sure
 if my office
 closed since Monday
 will be open on Wednesday

as for
treats
well
getting out yesterday
 for a short walk
I discovered
 the markets
 in the area
 were open
 with limited supplies
 but
 open none the less

I hope
 wherever
you are
things are improving!

oh sandy ...

a once in a lifetime event
surging walls of water
full moon
coverging forces
 said crack meterologist
Sam Champion

Super Storm
Halloween Super Storm
Stormageddon
Storm of the Century

Surge is the word

 the local station weather team
 are offering
 the Sandy Survival Guide
with a special segment:
what to tell your children about the storm

predictions say
 Atlantic City is 'ground zero'

it will hit the casinos and beach
full force
sometime
 around midnight

which means
the news people
 the weather people
will be on air
constantly

 churning
 the little news there is

 bolstering it
with
threats

Sandy might be the greatest threat to human life
comparing it to the movie
 The Perfect Storm
to Katrina
to that movie
with Morgan Freeman
where that giant wave wiped out the country

with potential power outages numbers
 letting everyone know
 the officials
 are prepared
 but
 in the next breath
 they're saying
what they feel
might
 still go wrong

offering tips
like
 if your power goes out
dont open your fridge
 food will stay edible longer
(because you wont be eating it?)

yesterday at the nail salon
 what?
of course
I got my nails done
a girl has to look good
even, no, especially
 if Stormaggedon is coming
a woman wondered if the restaurants would be open and delivering
hello
the NYC subways shut down last night
NJ transit shut down yesterday afternoon
people are being encouraged to stay home
my office is closed
even
Columbia University is closed
a teacher
having her nails done
 said
this is the first time that's ever happened

After
Fresh Direct
cancelled my Sunday food/grocery delivery
 I decided
 I had
to go get some food

 all
the grocery and specialty food stores
 here
 are small
 no
major supermarkets
 on the
Upper Westside

Citarella
had a long line outside from the time they opened
letting only a few customers in at a time

Westside Market
 was total insanity
shelves were empty early in the day

Fairway
also was monitoring
the number of people permitted to shop

Zabars
well
it was a free for all
 the crowds were crazy
 I know
 because
 I braved it
with a friend
we tag teamed
 the counters
she got a number for the prepared foods
 while
I waited on the bread/bakery line
amazingly
the check out was easy
I scored enough to keep us from starving during the next few days
but
of more concern
 is
my flight
Wednesday morning
 to
Cincinnati

so far its not been cancelled
it looks like Cincinnati
isnt in the strike zone
so
I am going
 to insist
 that
Sandy
hit and run
 get outta here
 by
 early enough on Tuesday
 so the airports will reopen
 and
I get out of town
after all
its always about me!

not a scaredy-cat

i am not a scareddy-cat
 i am not a scareddy-cat
 i'm not
 i am an explorer

if there's a small space or empty box
i must explore

she's gonna vacuum
i am not ascared

if
she can't find this thingamathing
maybe
she
wont
i'm gonna keep it here
she'll never notice
la la la la

waiting

this sweet pup
 is looking
 at his person
his person is eating an apple
apparently
he
usually
gets part of the apple
 as a treat
well
 see those blue clad legs?
they belong
to a friend of the pup's person
and
he said apples are not good for dogs

this other pup
 is looking on
 at his friend
clearly
 feeling his pain
 at no longer
getting
apples
as
treats

last week
 I
once again
got lucky
 won
a $50 gift certificate for Shutterfly
from
 my friend Jeanne's blog giveaway
how cool is that?

  Do you know her blog
Bichonpawz
have you met
Jeanne and her adorable pups Chloe and LadyBug?

the cat post

my, our cats
are
not
 something
I blog
about

until we adopted Jack
a little over 2 yrs ago
I, we had never been owned by a ginger tabby

Sans
our first cat
was black and white with big green eyes

when we put this 'neckerchief
on her
she loved it
 and
we called her Tex

she was so smart
maybe
the smartest cat who ever owned us

a few months
after she passed
Gus came into our lives
while
 he was far
from
MENSA material
 he was
Toonman's
best friend

when Gus was about 9 yrs old
we adopted Rose
she was my baby

a few months
after Gus passed
we adopted Jack
our first ginger boy

sweet Jack
all he wanted was a friend
 but
Rose wasn't interested she wasn't well
but
he did try

after we lost Rose
Jack seemed sad
he really seemed to be lonely
with
only
Toonman to hang with

so we adopted our second ginger boy
Harry
he's amazing
 in under a week
 he's won over Jack

inspected
the
entire
 apartment

settled
 into life
 at
Casa Edelstein

if you can
 I recommend
 going to a shelter
 and
bringing home a rescue
 they are the best friends
you'll ever have

okay

I think I've gotten the cats covered
out of my system
 now
back
 to
normal
blogging

see you later!

three

three
different
kinds
of gourds

I realized
 the photos
 I've been sharing
 haven't been
very
 seasonal

after
we brought Harry home
 this past Sunday
 I popped out
 for a quick walk
 to the Green Flea
 I needed apples
while
I was waiting to pay
 I looked around
pulled out
 the iPhone
 and
snapped
this shot

 I am not sure
if these are
edible
or
ornamental

water towers

Yesterday morning
 it was dark
 when
 I left the apartment

 that's
West 79 Street
 intersecting
with
Broadway

  that white figure
 is a street art installation
 to me
it looks like a priest from the Spanish Inquisition
 behind him
 if you look up
 you'll see
 two
water towers/tanks

there was a tragedy yesterday morning
 someone
 uptown
near the City College subway stop at 148 St
 was killed
the subway service on the local line was affected
when I got to the 79th Street station
there was a 20 min wait for the local
  I decided
 to walk
to 72nd
 to catch the express

 along the way
 I spotted
 the M104
 ran to the stop
 hopped on
along with many others
 settled into a seat
 and
watched the city wake up

speaking of waking up
 last night
shortly after I got home
 I was crouching down
to give Jack a pep talk
 when Harry walked over
put his nose against Jack's
and
 for a nano sec
 the 3 of us
 just
were

 then
 Jack hissed
 Harry and I jumped
 but
it was a break through
 in fact
Harry decided it was permission to hang out in the living room
where he tried to get Jack to play
no dice
Jack wasn't ready to give in
tho
it was clear
 to both Toonman and me
 that he really wanted to

at about 3:30 a.m.
 I woke
 to the sounds
of
insane cats
racing around
 running
madly
 from
living room
 to
 bedroom
back and forth

 I lay there
 listening
 waiting
 for the
growls
the hisses

 there
were
none

when I finally got up at 5:30
both cats joined me in the kitchen
I washed out
re-filled
 the water bowl
put it on the floor
Harry went to get a drink
 Jack hissed
Harry stopped
he sat down

 I do believe
they're going to be friends

harry

jack

busy busy busy

it was a fun weekend

we
never do anything right away
 a shelf
 I've wanted to buy
 for
seriously
 years and years
 finally
 got bought
last
weekend
 hung this

 that's Turk
our friend
 Andrew Johns
who  writes the teleplays he and Toonman do
made him
 and
 two other figures
we have
 literally
 hanging
 around
our living room

eventually
 there'll
be scarves
 and
 caps
 hanging
 on those pegs
 but for now
 its
Turk's
perch

for
 almost as long
 as I've wanted that shelf
I have wanted
 a painting by San Merideth

  San
 used to blog
now its only on special occasions
 that
 you'll see her blog update

San and her husband
live and create art in Santa Fe
  they own Convergence Gallery there
 of course
when I was in Santa Fe
 this past summer
 she and her husband
were off visiting family out of state

I bought a small painting by Brad Stroman

I drooled over the incredible sunset series
 she's been painting

 well I got lucky
 she said
 make her an offer
 I did
she accepted
 and
its now hanging in our bedroom
 over the bed
 its called
High Road to Taos

while my heart
still aches
for Rose
we have adopted a new 'baby'
through
 in Edison NJ

his name is
Harry

we think
he is purr-fect

Jack
did not welcome him politely
thankfully
 Harry has better manners
and
a 'that's okay with me' personality

It will take a little while
but
 I've no doubt
they will be friends

simplify

took
 this shot
with my iPhone
 using
 645 Pro app
 then
 I tried
Topaz Labs
 recently upgraded
Simplify v4
 plug in

 there's a long story here
 about
 squeaky wheels
not so great installation issues
I am going spare you
because
in
the
 end

 it turned out
to be
 worth the hassle
its
 filled
with
 lots of great new presets

i loves me some presets

waiting

maybe
 in
early March
 my friend
Kate and I
 went
 to
Central Park
we were going to take photos at the carousel
 but
we got there
it
 was
closed
 despite
it being an incredibly lovely early sunshine-y spring day

  we walked
to
Bethesda Fountain
at the top of the stairs
there was
 a crowd
 as you can see
 people
bikers
dogs
 standing
 watching
 something down below

 turned out
it was a
group
 of
amazingly
 talented
young men
 doing
 gymnastic-like
 dancing

they call themselves
 Afrobats

 you can
 click
  here
to see what everyone was looking at

  everyone
but
that Lab, sorry that is not a Lab, its a Golden
 and
 that Spaniel
 who
seemed
far more
interested
in
 each
other

on broadway

I won
tickets
 to see
The Heiress
 on
Broadway
 thanks
 to
Rosemary
at

The show
which is in previews
 at the Walter Kerr Theatre
opens on November 1st
 stars
David Strathairn as her father
and
Dan Stevens
(who plays Mathew on Downton Abbey
as her suitor
with
in the
 film version
Aunt Lavinia was played by Maggie Smith
(the Dowager Duchess in Downton Abbey)
Ms Ivey played Aunt Elizabeth

 I found it interesting
that
 this play
written by Ruth and Augustus Goetz
adapted from the Henry James novel Washington Square
 has had many productions
on Broadway

in 1949
Billy Wilder
 directed
the film version
starring
Olivia de Havilland, Ralph Richardson and Montgomery Clift

I was going to recap
 the plot
for those
 who don't know it
but
instead
I'll give you a link to a recap of it here

I got to see it last night
while it
wasnt
riveting theatre
it was
 enjoyable

Judith Ivey steals the show

Jessica Chastain was fine,
I am sure
 after previews
she will be excellent

I was disappointed
in
Dan Steven's 'American accent'

I am however glad I got to go
its always fun to go to the theatre

Have you been to the theatre recently?
What did you see?

three

another
 mosaic
also
in the East Village

 this one
 is on
 the subway platform
 at
8th Street

 there are
 many of these
 around
 the city's subway system platforms

 no amount
of
 Googling
 got
me
any closer
 to learning
 who
 created them
 but
while
Googling images
I discovered
 a lot more station art
I want to go see in person

missed connections

how was your weekend?
mine
was pretty good
 tho
 there were some glitches

 Saturday
I had planned to go with my sister
to
 'meet'
a cat
I thought
I might
 if the
connection
 was there
adopt

 huh?

 what do I mean
 by
 connection?

  Let me explain
we have had 4 cats in our lives
four times
 a cat
 has
 chosen
 me
 animal lovers
 know
 how that works

  well
 in the end
I didn't get to meet him
 there were some glitches
 that may still get resolved
 we'll see

 Sunday
I went to meet my friends Judy and Larry for brunch
 I took the subway
 which
should
 have
 taken
all of 10-15 minutes
to get from 79th Street to 50th Street
 but
of course
 it didn't

 I got to the station
 just as a train
 was leaving

another missed connection

 the sign said
next local
 would
be
along
 in
12 minutes

 after 7 minutes
 an announcement
 advised
we stand back from the edge of the platform the train was not stopping

 the next train
 would be along
 in 6 minutes

I ended up exiting at 50th Street at 12:30
 walked quickly to the restaurant
only
 to
 find
 no one
 there

just then
 my phone beeped
two missed calls and a text from Judy
 she was lost
had the wrong address
where was I?

turned out
she was only a block away

 now it was 12:45
no sign of Larry
 our reservation was for 12:30
 Judy
 texted and called
 finally
 he texted back
he wasn't feeling well
 he had emailed her
 to say
 he wasn't coming
 she hadn't gotten the email

more missed connections

 anyway
 we decided to have brunch

 after
I walked
uptown
to the Flea Market
 before
 heading home
 to
Toonman
who has a terrible cold

germs
he shared
 I am now fighting

I hope
 your
weekend
 was more fulfilling

thanks coming along

waiting

Central Park
 3 summers ago
 Toonman and I
 took a walk
to the
Central Park Zoo
 along the way
 I got some fun photos

 however

this Corgi
refused to look at me,
he saw me
alright

 his head
 turned away
 just
as
was
hitting
 the
shutter
 ...

perceptions

is the glass
 half full or half empty?
do you see
rain clouds or a silver lining?
life is about choices
not long ago
 I learned
no choice was indeed a choice
fence sitting
should come
with
 'no butts here'
signage

those leaves?

they're floating in a puddle
that muck
they seem to be laying on
wait
 here comes a choice
is it
laying or lying?

actually
that's
silt
mud
 gunk
 from
 a
 renovation
construction

special weekend plans?
or
just hanging out?
(just hanging out ..  still takes planning)

three

today's
are
the
Brooklyn Bridge
(a lovely historic bridge but the Manhattan Bridge is much more interesting)
Verizon HQ
(a truly uninspired tower)
and
Manhattan Criminal Court Building
(interesting history, click here)
taken from
Brooklyn Bridge Park

water towers

I know where this is
 I know where this is
 took
 it on Saturday
 as I walked up
 Lexington Avenue
 from 79th to 84th Street
 for
my
yearly
 breast
squoosh
 aka
mammogram

if you haven't had this
very
necessary
 preventative
exam
done
recently
go set up an appointment
 now

 if you don't believe me
 as to its importance,
go ask my friend
her mammo last year
caught early stage cancer and got it gone!

anyway

I was early so I decided to get a cup o'joe

surprise

I left the apartment without my wallet
'cept
I wasn't sure about
that
til
phoned
(how is it I had my phone but not my wallet?)
home

Toonman confirmed it was there

phew!

so no coffee

well
with time to kill
what else would I do?
take some photos
of course

the 4th Street Photo Gallery

back
when
 I undertook
to
 wander
 the Mosaic Trail
 I stopped
in front of this glass frontage
 to peek inside
a wonderful
old photo studio/gallery
it sits
 between
Second Avenue and The Bowery
you
 can read about it
 and
owner
Alex Harsley

It was a busy weekend
Mammogram followed by beautification on Saturday
the morning news shows
 on
Sunday
 drove me
 from the apartment
 I could only yell
LIAR
 so many times
 before
Toonman complained
so
 off
I went
to
Trader Joe
its Fall
its October
its Pumpkin time
TJ's
 had more
 pumpkin themed foods
 than
 I believe
 this pumpkin lover
 ever imagined
 I bought
Pumpkin Loaf mix
which
I made
right after
over baked
the
turkey meatballs
I think this might be the end of my cooking

okay, so
how was your weekend?
